If your son/daughter was caught driving drunk and called you to come bail them out of jail .... okay get ready ......would you? I have always told my daughters that if they were ever caught for DUI to have the cops call me because i was going to come to the jail to make sure she was alright then i was going to cry all the way home because my baby was sitting in jail. My girls are 28 and 29yrs. now and never put me in that position however i still have a 12 and 13yr. old sons that could put me to the test .I hope they have better sense, but if they don't i hope i can live up to my promise! What are your thoughts on this?

I think this is a very good way to parent. Our State there is a mandatory 12 drunk tank stay, then you can bond out. i do think sitting in jail until court date is a wise idea for children who find themselves behind the wheel of car after drinking. I have not had to do this But I told my boys this would be the case if it ever happened and I am pretty sure I could have carried out that threat.

hm thats a tough, i think that in the heat of the moment because i would be furious i would leave them in jail over night just to make sure that it sinks into thier head that this is not cool, or okay in any kind of way.then i would bail them out the next and then they would be grounded for a year no keys to a car no car period. i remember my brother did that when i was young my mother bailed him out but he didnt breath fresh air in almost 8 months.

Both my daughters has told me that they KNEW i would try to help them no matter what they did but if they were ever caught drunk behind the steering wheel of a car they might have had to spend the rest of their days locked-up if not in jail then in their room.

that is very good, at least you know that they are responsible and are aware that they will be punished, they do listen to us even tho it sometimes seem like they dont, but its those responsible choices that they make that show us they are. your girls are very bright..

i wouldnt bail my kids out of jail regardless.. fact if they got busted for drunk driving.. theyd be safer locked in a jail cell than where i could get my hands on them for endangering not only their own lives.. but the lives of countless innocent others on the road.

That's a good question, and it's really hard to say because you don't know what you'll do until you're there. Common sense says make them stay in jail and learn their lesson, but your heart says take them out and bring them home.
I hope I am not put in a situation like this.

i am sorry to say this but i am like u i would go see them but i would have to leave them there. and just to let u know mother i am only 26 years old and ur other daughter is only 28. but i think that if they were dumb enough to drink and drive then they need to stay where they are.

no I cannot think that were I in the same situation I
'would leave my teenage kid in the jail overnight. What
little punishment might be derived from this would be
overcome from your kid thinking you did not love him or her
enough to bail them out. the things that they might learn in that one night in a jail are almost worse than what they
did. no bring them home then punish them but not by leaving
them in jail overnight.

My daughters are both grown now and my older girl was a little wild at one time. She has told me that the only thing that kept her from behind the wheel when she had been drinking was the fact that she KNEW that although her father and i was divorced that that was the one thing we both agreed about- you Drive drunk, you pay the price! and she did not want to sit in jail!

I did this with my children but it just wasnt for dui it was if they ever get arrested, the tough love is very difficult. I received the phone call that he had been arrested for trespassing on a public baseball field. Which threw me for a loop, I asked the police officer if he mouthed off or try to run he said No. Well this was stupid so not only did I bail him out in 15 minutes I went to the courts and asked the judge if the officers have better things to do with thier time. It was 4 pm and a group of kids were playing ball, There was a sign on the outside of the fence on the opposite side of the ballfield that said No tresspassing which was all rusted. The judge dropped the charges and told the officer to start bringing her real criminals. That was the only time he got arrested and he told me it scared the crap out of him. My son was 16 years old when this happened. He had later told me this same office would pull him to the side and frisk him, and when he asked the officer what he was looking for he said nothing you just look like a punk. I called the police dept and reported the harrassment and it stopped.

Driving drunk is one of the stupidest things a person can do(in my opinion) and really the one thing that i worried that they might do as a teen. I guess it didn't really occur to me that they might actually break any other law! You must live in a mighty small spot for the cops to worry about kids playing ball behind a fence(even if it was locked) unless there was something dangerous in there. Jeez, he should have been glad they were where he could see that they were not into anything and off the streets.

oh no this was a public baseball field no locks no nothing, they used it for little league. the cop was just a jerk and liked to harrass the kids.
