Catching the bus - A cheaper way of travel - Think Again!

There's a hotly debated discussion going on where I live as bus fares have risen quite a lot. Yes you can buy a seasonal ticket, but I sat and worked it out on a bus route that I would take if I were to take the bus to work... It takes two buses with approx travelling time of 1 1/2 hours each way (20 min trip in the car) that adds up to at least two hours extra travelling time a day. Now if I were to work this as overtime (which I wouldn't do if I had extra time on my day like this) even if I was on the minimum wage this is losing me £10 per day, which equates to around £50 per week! A more handsome profit than I would be earning than travelling by bus and more than enough to keep my car going for the week! So is it really cheaper to travel to bus each day??

No, bus journies are quite expensive now, unless they're subsidised. It's a shame really, but I think brought about by the fact that most people drive in rural areas, thus forcing the fares up, to cover petrol useage. Brightest Blessings my dear friend. xxx

There's subsidised here for the pensioners (although that only came in a year or so ago!) Unless they significantly reduced their fares and put on a decent reliable service, you won't catch me on a bus any time soon! Thanks for your response! Blessed Be!

Ah, we had a bus to Burgess Hill which was subsidised. The fare to Burgess Hill and back was £2.50, but if we were to catch the other bus to Haywards Heath... the same distance away... it cost £4.90 return. Needless to say, the subsidised bus was soon taken off because it was running at a loss. I certainly wouldn't pay £4.90 to go into Haywards Heath... I much prefer Burgess Hill and the only way we can get there on the bus now, is to go to HH and change buses... probably another three of four pounds on top of that! I cadge a lift when I go to Burgess Hill!

Apart from the fact that most bus drivers are grumpy they are so very unreliable that I would hate to have to rely on them, I would probably end up not getting to work at all. Buses are few and far between where I live which makes it hard as the kids get older and want to go places on their own.

Yes totally agree with you, and it's less flexible than driving too! Thanks for your response!
