On the toilet

Whenever I go into the bathroom to use the toilet at least one of my cats runs in (usually the little one) and meows up a storm trying to get me to pet them! What's up with this? It happens every time I leave the door open. My brother has a cat that is afraid of humans and hides under the bed all day, but then will run out and do the same thing if someone is using the bathroom. That is the only time she wants to be petted! What's up with this behavior?

It must be a universal cat thing! I had one cat who would never allow you to pet him...unless you were sitting on the toilet. He would shove the door open, hop on your lap & yell until you petted him.

Yeah, well, just wait until you have children someday, woo. I miss the days of going to the bathroom by myself. I was one of those people who always thought, I just wont ever start letting them come in with me and that will keep THAT from ever happening. But no, it just doesn't work that way. My dog used to like to go with me before my son was born. She would put her sweet little head on my knee and flash those puppy dog eyes. I miss those days too.

I have no interest in having children! The world is overpopulated as it is.

I actually have a theory behind this habit of the cats. I think it's because they know they have a captive audience. So what better audience that someone useing the bathroom! You can't go anywhere until you're finished and they can get all the pettings they want.

I don't know why they do this either. I have 3 inside 2 kittens and 1 adult and all 3 come in when I use the bathroom. If I shut the door the adult she puts her paws under the door and tries to get it open the other 2 meow and scratch on the door. They certainly are different, but wonderful!!

My cats do that as well! They hate being locked out of anywhere... even if it's just the boring bathroom!

I don't have an answer to this question but, 2 of my cats get amorous when someone is in the bathroom. It is odd behavior to us but, seemingly quite common according to what I have read here on myLot. You aren't the first person to ask this here and, I am sure you won't be the last! LOL!
I have 3 cats and 2 of them get all lovey dovey when someone uses the toilet. Both of my cats, not at the same time and not every time, will talk to me. One will rub back and forth and stand on her hind legs looking to be pet. The other one had a bad habit of trying to crawl into our laps. A habit that was broken because, it had to be. Who wants a cat in their lap at that particular time?
So weird! I don't get it! But, I do realize how common it is due to myLot. LOL!

cats do that, if they know that they will be petted in the bathroom they will always go in to get patted in the bathroom, they know someone did it before and so they want them to do it again, my cats, all cats will do that. It doesn't have to be the bathroom it can be any place they know someone will pet them.

With my two dogs, I never had a problem with my Beagle coming to visit me while I was on the potty. Now my mix, Shiloh on the other hand, I call her my potty buddy. For some odd reason, she will follow behind me, and hit my hand with her nose to get me to pet her. It doesn't bug me, I just wish I could at least once go potty without anyone bugging me, human or animal.

I'm not sure why some cats do that either. My sister has two cats also and when we go to her house, one of the cats likes to be petted, even when we go to the bathroom and it likes to rub up against us also. the other one isn't very friendly and it runs and hides from people.

I hve no idea. I know my younger dog likes to follow me every where including the bathroom. If I have the door closed I can hear her sniff at or bump the door. If the door is open she walks right in as if to ask what I am doing.

My cats don't do that, but my male cat always sits by the door and meows till whoever is in the bathroom opens the door and lets him in. Then he rubs up against your leg and starts purring. For the longest time I thought my cat was so weird lol.

Oh yes I can so relate to this cat running into the bathroom when your going thing LOL.
My cat Butterball he is a 1 yr. and 2 months old has to come into the bathroom every time I'm in there dosn't matter if I'm going or just cleaning he has to be in there w/ me. He is too funny he will pass infront of me back and forth meowing at me. He hates it when I want to just relax in the tub and I close him out of the bathroom. He claws at the door and will sit right infront of it til I come out Cat's are the funniest.

It's an animal thing. Our cats and dogs all do it and we had a girl living with us that had a ferret and she did it too when she was allowed to run the house. Have no clue why but in general maybe the know it is the one place you can't ignore them. In fact come to think of it when we have bottle lambs in the house in the spring they do it too and if you think the others are fun try imagining a cold wet nose butting you in the warm bare buttocks and thighs.

Great question... possible answers...
An attraction to odors released when using the bathroom (not being gross here, seriously),
An ancient affinity for "water holes" as places that pack animals would congregate in in peace,
A feeling of vulnerability projected and/or percieved
...Just some guesses. Give me a nudge if someone has a definitive answer on this, because I, too, have experienced a coupld of cats, although, not obsessive about it, would sometimes exhibit the same behaviour.

we have a cat that does the exact same thing. Funny thing is, she shows little or no affection any other time. It's really rather off-putting to have a cat rub around your legs and lick you while taking care of your toilet duties

i've been trying to figure out that one myself.
my black cat will rattle the doorknob until the door opens and come screaming in the same way.he'll usually try to sit on your lap as well as if meowing on the floor wasn't enough.
