Recently I came accross a few web-sites advertising the 'virtual office' and 'virtual assistant'. These websites said that I can work from home and make money. But does it work? Do you require certain skills?

Hi I've been a virtual assistant for years now and I would never go back to working in an office again. I want to work and not lose my skills and do it from home so that I can raise my children too. I love it, my hours are not standard, in fact most of my work is done at night when kids are asleep and now as toddler is watching the Wiggles. Yes it works, you are a micro business, self employed, an independent contractor. VAs have skills ranging all spectrums of administrative work and can specialise in niche areas too. My areas are simple, secretarial work and transcription and my business is thriving; in fact I haven't been able to take on new clients since 2005, just too busy. Check out http://www.virtual-assistant-advice.com for so much information on setting up business as a VA. As more businesses realise it's smarter to use the services of a VA the industry is booming worldwide. Good luck to all.

Very inspirational; thank you.
I live in England, UK where we are slow on the uptake. There is a bit of a mistrust that there is no personnel there to suporvise VAs.
The UK is not as forward looking as the USA. I think I might move over to your wonderful country.

It can work but it takes a lot of work and a lot of marketing and networking because there are lots of virtual assistants out there. You do need to have basic computer skills and the ability to work unsupervised in order to be successful.
