Would you be able to render First Aid treatment to someone in need?

Being that mishaps occur in the home I think we should all have some first aid knowledge as this can save a life. Sometimes when a person falls into difficulty at our workplace on the roads or while just out shopping or having fun, having a knowledge of first aid treatment can come in handy. I have seen before where one person fainted and there was a flurry of movements as no one around knew exactly what to do. Everyone started shouting what they knew and that in itself present a waste of crucial time. I would like to be able to save someone's life or at least help to make them as comfortable as possible when in such difficulty. I would certainly like this to be done for me too if I should fall ill or ahve an accident. So do you have any first aid knowledge which could come in handy? I should certainly go learn some. When it all comes down to the nut we are our brother,s keeper as much as we are our own.

What a great discussion, I wish more and more people would take a first aid course or at least CPR because it is so very important. It is a good feeling knowing that you know what to do in an emergency, it is something you will always remember. An an EMT I know the importance how CPR helps to save lives.

Thanks Howard. I have always loved to see EMTs go to work and really admire their effiency at trying to calm all involved while tending to the patient. One of my sisters used to work as a medical records statistician iin the A&E Dept at the major hospital here in my parish and boy the cases she can relate to. She's strong that way. All due credit to you and the people in your field of work. (lol)

It's been a long time since I last took a First Aid and Casualty handling course. I think it was in 1996 or 7. I have yet to do a refresher course and probably might in the near future. I have not had to use any of what I learnt but I hope that if I had to, I would remember.

Hi Maddy. its good that you've already been trained in first aid and still planning on doing refresher courses. Many more of us including myself need to follow suit. Thanks for sharing. (lol)

Yes. As an allied health professional I received training in standard first aid and CPR. It proved to be extremely useful because one time I saved my father. We were having lunch at home when he suddenly choked. When it became clear to me that he couldn't cough it out I immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver on him. After a few seconds he was breathing again. I am forever thankful that I had the opportunity to save a loved one's life. I definitely recommend undergoing training.

Bravo. I actually listened a radio program on Saturday where the specialist adressed the very matter of assisting persons who are choking and how to identify whether you need to give a blow between the shoulder (I think) and doing that bit with the fist below the diaphram. I am happy you were equipped with that knowledge so that you could render such assistance to your dad. Goes to show just how much we all need to have the knowledge of first aid. Thanks for sharing Wisedragon. (lol)

Well i am not sure about how far knowledge i have in First aid but all i can do is nurse the few wounds caused. Some times i just help recovering from cramps and body pains since i have been a cricketer and was tought how to get them done. Most of the times i just help them out with the medicines and stuff like precautionary measures to stay away from serious affects.

Well some first aid knowledge is better than no first aid knowledge at all. The persons you have assisted would certainly be greatful you were around to assist them. Far better than a novice like me could. So you're a former cricketer eh. Nice. One of my favorite sports to watch but especially the one dayers or 2o/20s. Thanks for sharing (lol).

I have both a current CPR/first aide card and also have been trained with the defib. It is required of us at work to have current certs in both. I have been involved with first response (9 years with volunteer fire department) so I have no doubt as to what to do in emergency situations. I also have the knack of being able to stay calm, and know the need of one person 'taking charge'. Like you say, there is always a crowd gather, but for the most part no one person steps up and takes charge and tells one person to call 911, and then assess the injury or begin CPR

Seems your well equipped with both the knowledge and practical appplication there Palonghorn. Our lack of knowledge can reallly end up causing someone to die when a simply first aid course could have saved them. on being calm by nature. While I am that way in most situations a terrible scene and blood can totally throw me out. Thanks for sharing. (lol)

Well, as a trained nurse by profession I could certainly do more than administer a little first aid. lol. But, that is probably not the norm and not the type of respondent you had in mind when you asked. I did hear a very good bit of advice once, though. If something happens, many people (onlookers) freeze up- either they panic and can't think, don't want to get involved, don't know what to do, or figure someone else will do something. If you have the presence of mind to help the person in need...tend to the person first but quickly pick one person in the crowd, look them in the eye and say "CALL 911". Don't just yell for someone to call, or assume someone has thought to do so, because most will consider the reasons above and not do it. Or, it will take longer for someone to realize that no one has done it and then you have lost valuable time. If you look one person in the eye it forces them to take on the responsibility of getting it done.

That is good advice Above31rubies. I'll be sure to try and remember that if ever I am at such a scene again. People really do freeze up and start to panic. Your expertise as a nurse is very much welcomed. Thanks for sharing. (lol)

I am a preschool teacher and we are required to be certified in CPR and first aid. We go to our local Red Cross for training. I takes a couple of hours and about a hundred and fifty dollars and then you are certified. Then you go back each year for retraining. I have a three year old daughter and am grateful and feel more secure knowing how to administer CPR properly. When we go to our training they go over adult and child/infant methods to CPR. If you are interested in learning you should contact your local chapter of the Red Cross and see when they offer classes. Some towns also hold classes for a very small fee, check with your local Parks and Rec department to see if they offer anything.

That is a novel idea. I know our preschool teachers here have to do quite a bit of nursing to those young ones in their charge but I done know if they receive formal eduction on administering first aid. I do know one of the red cross leaders for my parish and am also an inactive member. Thats something I should find out about. Thanks for sharing. (lol)

I could render first aid if needed. I have taken cpr courses, and basic first aid where I work. I also went through an EMT course some years back though I did not pursue that field for employment.
