ok you have all heard the story of the lonely woman with 50 cats well i live next door to my boyfriends grandfather who has like 50-60 cats. it drives me nuts because the reason he has so many cats is because he lets the female cats go outside...every time i turn around one of them is pregnant again... he wont go and fix any of them and i was wondering is there a law against having this many pets???? not that i would call animal control because they would put them to sleep and i don't want that on my conscience. I am an animal lover but I have no clue what to do or to say to him...he can't afford to feed them all so they kind of get fed from everyone in the neighborhood... his own daughter is spending hundreds of dollars to keep them well fed...what would you do?

I would report him to an animal welfare society or charity which can rehome the healthy cats and neuter them. They could leave a couple of cats for the man to look after, but there is no way he can care for that many animals.
Apart from feeding, these animals need veterinary care, innoculations and preventative treatment. It would be kinder to the animals to report the man. He may mean well but pet welfare is important and it costs a lot to keep them well fed and in a healthy condition.

he is happy on taking good care of his pets, as long as he can afford to feed them all there is no problem with regards to unless he leave the cats roaming around on the neighborhood and stole some foods for their to eat that would be the problem, if i am the neighbor i will report him to the higher authority to make some legal actions.

What a sad and difficult situation you are all in and unfortunately this is a problem that is just going to increase. I think if I were you I would speak to my boyfriend and tell him that you all (you mentioned a daughter too) go round to see his grandfather and tell him that you are really concerned for the cats wellbeing. If he is a real cat lover he won't want them to be neglected in anyway and suggest that HE contacts an animal shelter. Not only do the cats need help but I feel that he also needs to come to terms with the problem surrounding him.
Suggest to him that the shelter take away a few cats at a time or you said that neighbours are feeding some of the cats already, how about asking if they could "foster" the cats until the shelter can rehome them although the first thing he needs to do really is make sure that any cats that are with him are fixed. Expensive I know but until that is done then it is just going to increase.
I feel for you all and please keep in touch with how things are going. Take care.

oh my goodness! that almost amounts to animal abuse! sometimes it's better to call animal control as it's IMPORTANT to get the female cats spayed. think about all the innocent kittens that is brought into this world. do you think they can give them a good life? sometimes one has to be cruel to be nice. not reporting him will only mean that the kittens are born to suffer. lack of food will most prob be the smallest issue. how about dying from infected wounds from fights? or animal abusers who hate the large amount of cats? this is really a sad state of affair.
