The Wind In His Ears...

My dog, Petey, used to love going with me in the car. He wouldn’t run around or jump…he’d just hang his face out the window and watch everything going by. I never left him alone in the car but he loved it so much that I had to take him with me. Once he broke his leg (thanks to my ex’s mother) and I had about 2-3 months of him going everywhere with me. He was so little and helpless…I’d wrap him in a little blanket I made for him and we’d go. After his leg was healed he’d still grab his blankie and head for the door everytime I’d get ready to leave. It broke his heart when I couldn’t take him every time. I never took him in the summer though b/c the heat in cars can be unbearable for pets. Petey’s since passed away but he’s waiting for me I’m sure.
Here in Missouri it’s illegal to leave a pet in the car in the summer time. They are so much better off at home where they can have coolness and water. Ppl don’t tend to realize how hot a car can get even with the windows cracked.
Do you ever take your pet with you in the car? Do they like to ride in the car? Do you take them in the summer or leave them home for safety and comfort?

As I have three very quick little guys I do not take them with me very often. Three are too much to watch out for. Years ago I had a doberman pinscher and and Irish setter and drove a Volkswagen beetle people use to stare and wave at the two huge dogs sitting in the back seat. They loved to ride in the car eventually i got a station wagon but I think they preferred the beetle.

I can just imagine that. I once followed a small pickup with a topper. At a distance I thought there were kids hanging out the windows. Turned out it had six dogs in the topper, and windows open. Good size, hunting dogs, dalmation. I worried about them a little.

To be quite honest, Gerty, I really hate to see dogs in the back of trucks as I am always waiting on the worse to happen that they jump out into the traffic.

I'm sorry about the passing of your adorable dog. I have a yorkie and she is too cute. I love her so much and I can only imagine the feeling of losing her one day. But I do take her in the car with me and my husband when we can. We've been taking her to the vet lately because we recently got her in March and she was still getting her shots here and there. She loves to feel the wind in her face. She is just so cute sticking her little head out as far as she can, which isn't too far, I don't want to risk her jumping up and falling out. And whenever we got to the pet store to buy anything for her, we bring her along so she can get out every little while. I'm not sure about the summer time yet but time will come and tell how we will react to taking her out.

I don't normally take my dogs with me places because they don't like going for rides. I would love to take them, but it's just too stressful for them. It's great that your doggy loves to take rides. And the part about his blankie is so cute!

It is illegal in montreal and the rest of canada too to leave pets in the car on a hot summer day. They will die. I know dogs love to stick their head out the window and feel the breeze, cats are scared in the car, yet they love to sit in the window at home, go figure.

Aww Twoey, bless his heart....
The only time we take our dog with us in the car is when we are going somewhere She can get out with us. Like outings or to the park for a run, the lake such as that. She does love to ride. Before gas became so expensive, my husband would put her in the car and just go for a drive, so she could enjoy it, but we don't do that anymore. Its sad really.

Don't forget the pet stores. Some allow you to bring your pets in. Domingo knows when I'm going to stop at Petco cause he will start going nuts when he sees the store. He loves going in and helping me do my shopping there. lol Besides, he always gets a few treats when we walk in and then again at the register.

When I had a dog she loved to ride in the car and
hang her head out the window but I never ever
left her in the car as its just too dangerous. when'
it was hot weather she stayed home where it was safe and cool
and when it was cooler then we would take her
with us. I now live in an apartment so cannot have
pets.

..."he’d still grab his blankie and head for the door.." - That's so cute! Our dog is too old to climb up into the car.. but we never took her anyway.. just too hairy, and usually I'm just headed to the grocery store anyway.. Luckily she never seemed to mind being left at home.. I would never leave a pet in the car on a summer day.. just too uncomfortable or downright dangerous..

My cats wait at home for me. They go wander in the yard, climb the trees, watch the birds, and Pounce on the car when we come home to welcome us back. One of them likes to ride a lot, one likes to ride some, one does not like to ride. To each cat his own choice.

I dont think either of my dogs would like to go in the car around here. In the summer it is way too hot and I would not leave a dog in the car under any circumstances. So mine just relax in the A/C at home.

awwwwww Petey sounded like he was a great dog. I loved the part how he would take his blankie with him in the car after his leg healed.
I take Domingo with me in the car when I can and when I know his tummy will allow it. He can't handle alot of starts and stops w/o drooling all over and throwing up. If I know I'm not going to stop anywhere in the summer, he comes with. Otherwise I will keep him home where it's cool in the house. In the cooler months, he loves going shopping with me and I'll even leave the windows down a 1/4 of the way so he can stick his nose out but not escape. I really think he gets a kick out of scaring the daylights out of ppl in the parking lots when they pass by cause he will suddenly pop up and bark at them. He has a really deep and fearsome bark and blends in well with both the exterior and interior of my car. Btw..he's the same way with a blankie in the car but only in the cold months. He will arrange it the way he likes and curl up to nap when I'm in a store.

Well, the one dog gets car sick, so we don't take her if we can avoid it. The cats HATE the car.
I have had the cats in the car while I wait to get them fixed, but if it was going to be warm, I would take them in where ever I was.
You are talking to someone that had to haul 4 kittens everywhere almost for most of a month last October.

I've never met a dog who didn't love to ride in the car. But you are right about the intense heat inside a car. I would never take my pets along in the summer for exactly that reason. I have often parked next to a car with a dog inside waiting for it's owner in the store. Sometimes they even leave little children for "just a minute" and that is just as bad. Not only because of the heat but also kids can get into a lot more trouble.

I used to have a dog named "Rock", and if you even mentioned going for a ride, he was all for it.. There were a few times that we had to take him riding around our back yard just to calm him down.. After that, my son would get him in the car about once a week and take him for a few turns around the back yard and Rock settled down after that.. He loved to go riding..

Yes, I love to take my dog for a ride and she loves to go out ,but I would never leave her in the car for a long time regardless of whether is summer or any other season. I always make sure that the windows are open ,so that she can have plenty of oxygen.

Our dog has stayed home maybe twice since we got him and he is 16 months old. The two times he stayed he was crated. He does not like to be alone and he will even whine and whine when he thinks he will be left alone. When he goes one person always stays with him in the car and in the summer time if it is too hot the a/c is running and if not too hot we sit there with the windows rolled down. He don't like to hang his head out and let his ears blow in the breeze. I am thinking of maybe getting another dog to keep him company so he can stay home sometimes.... but it would backfire on me and they would both want to go all the time. hahaha
