If you came across someone else’s journal, would you read it? Assume that it’s sitting out in the open, and the owner isn’t around and would never find out that you had read it. What if it was your journal that someone read, would you care if someone else read it? Would you want to know?

As much as I would like to think I am morally and ethically above this, human nature dictates curiosity. I probably would turn a page or two, and feel incredibly guilty for doing so. If the shoe was on the other foot and I found that my person thoughts had been read I bet I would feel violated. Especially had I not wanted them read. I don't think I would leave something as sensitive as a personal diary out, but things happen and it could happen. I probably would not like it at all.

Morning Angel
I know isn't it a shame we have this curious nature and wonder should we or shouldn't we?
When i looked i felt bad and then realised i knew something and could never tell or let it be known and cause a scene..choices choices?

I don't think that I would.. I might find out something that I didn't want to know.. And although I don'tkeep a journal, I would want someone to respect my privacy also.. I remember a time when one of my sisters was at another sisters house and decided to look through some of the dresser drawers.. Well, she found a picture or two that were supposed to be private and personal, and she got so incensed at the nerve of the other sister for having pictures like that laying around.. I don't believe that I have ever laughed so hard at anything in my life as I did that one.. No, I don't like to bother things that don't belong to me and don't want anyone to bother mine..

Hi rose,
Well i wont do that. Reading some one's else journal doesnt interest me at all. As a matter of fact i wont read my own journal, lol.
Yes i wont like if some one read my own journal. Iam not a person who gets into others persoanl life and i dont want others to mess with mine. May be iam an introvert type of person.
Cheers,
Tutul

I'm a pretty nosy person so I would probably read it. Hey, if they left it out in the open it's their own fault. I would be pretty embarassed if someone got ahold of my journal but think it would be my own fault if I left it out in the open. Humans are curious by nature and I think most people would sneak a peak.

Hi Emma..
I know what you mean..have done that before..
My Mother would look at mine when i was at school (long time ago) and i got back at her by writing a note on it and it said...Snooping again Huh?
She never mentioned it and neither did I.
I was a rebellious teen back then..it was the 60's

This may prove to be tempting. However, in as much as I wouldn't want other people prying into my private life, I also wouldn't want to do that to other people. I am aware that other people may end up reading my journal if I left it somewhere and I don't think I would feel good about that. There are things that about myself and my daily activities that I would like to keep to myself. I would probably go ballistic if someone gets to open my journal, read it and spread the news to everyone!

Hi Dolce vita
This is the drawback in trying to have something private of your own to write your most precious thoughts..to find it open and wondering who read it and will it be told to others?

I would not read someone elses journal without permission. I believe strongly in respecting other people's privacy and I would hope that others would respect mine. Of course hope doesn't always turn out as expected and so I, when I kept a journal, kept mine in a private place that had a lock.

Hi Sisterjinx
you have a very good attitude and people should respect this in others, but umfortunately if its open..they will look.
Hope you didn't hide it too well and couldn't find it again..LOL

If I know who owns it and I'm curious about the person, I'll probably read it. If I don't know who owns it, I'll try to read a page and if I get interested -- I'll read it. hehehe.. If it was my journal, I would surely get mad but I always make sure that my journal is in hiding and locked so I guess someone would have a hard time.

well, i can say that i will definitely peek at the journal if it is open right in front of my eyes... it is the owner's fault to be so careless and leave it in the open... if the owner does not want anybody to read the journal, then he/she should hide the book... otherwise he/she can't blame other people for reading it... take care and have a nice day...

Well as far as anyone reading any of my journals...good luck! My penmanship is so lousy that even I can't read my own writing...LOL...but sure anyone could read mine, anyone who knows me fairly well wouldn't be get revelations about myself as I'm pretty candid anyway. As for me sneaking a peek into someone else's journal..hehe..you bet.

Morning Pye..
I've seen your penmanship and i could read it, but could you read mine..LOL...I'm sure my children know about mine..since they tell me i'm writing all the time, but its nothing bad, just about the day and what happened so its true things and if i say something about a mean customer then they would already know it since i'd probably have told them to leave the store.
They wouldn't be sneaking a peek..LOL

No I wouldn't peek but I would say to the person not to leaving laying around just in case someone did if it was personal stuff in it. I haven't one but if I did I would keep in my bedroom away from prying eyes and would be very annoyed if someone did. Not that I have anything to hide and if they asked to read would probably allow it just not polite to pry. Ellie :D

sorry but I do respect other people's privacy even
if it is left out in the open. maybe the owner would never
know but I would, and I would feel very ashamed. I would
not want someone to read my private journal unless ihad
said they could. It is not a matter of being nosy, its a matter of training and good morals.

You have better control then me and i commend you on that...don't know if it started from when my children wouldn't tell me something and i'd check to find out or what, but now i know better cause it never helps the problem.

I tried to respond to this the other day and it wasn't letting me. So, let's try this again.
If it were someone I was close to that seemed to be acting unusual, out of concern, I most likely would look. I wouldn't look just to be nosey though.
As far as my journal, generally I am pretty up front about what is going on in my life. There isn't anything I would be upset by a friend reading.
A stranger might be rather confused if they read it. But I have a rule, if you aren't sure you can handle my answer, don't ask the question. So, if you are going to be nosey, enter at your own risk.

Hell yes! I wanna see if there's dirt on me! LOL! And what a perfect way to blackmail them with dirt if I have to? It's their fault for leaving evidence out in the open.. (I know, I'm evil... Shhhh.. ) I dont leave journals around, and I haven't written in my journals in years, since it's all in my head.. LOL! Awesome quesions, Sis!
Love ya!

It would depend on who it was. If it were my sister then probably not. But if it were like my boyfriend's (he doesn't have one) then yea I'd read it. I'd want to see what all he says about me. Plus he keeps a lot of things to himself so I could find out what was bothering him. I don't think I'd care if someone read my journal. It's just the truth on how I feel. If I didn't know then ok, if I did then that's ok too.

Morning Reene
My sisters were boring so never had any curiousity there and an ex boyfriend was like yours..so i felt that was my only way to learn since he wouldn't talk to me...glad in a sense, since it gave me the nerve to break it off.

No I wouldn't read it. It's not mine to read. Even if I visit family and friends see bills and stuff on their kitchen table, I move away as it's none of my business to go peeking in other peoples business hehe

Well, if it was one of my kids, it is fair game, sorry. I want to know if they are alright and what they are up to. I would want to make sure they are not planning on hurting themselves or someone else. Make sure no one is really picking on them, just serious things that can go on in a teens life.
Now, if it was someone else's, not for me to being nosing in thier business. But I would want to SO bad, but wouldn't. It is a trust issue, even with your kids it is a trust issue, but you have to protect them.

I wouldn't read it I am a very private person when it comes to other peoples things I feel this incrediable feeling of guilt when I even think about reading someone else's things or digging in their bag or something. I would just close the book an put it away someplace then when I seen the person I would tell them where I put the book.

People are very curious. More so, when it is ensured that their act is never going to be found out. Honetly,i may also get curious and try to read somebody's journal in the given situation (No such opportunity so far!) If it is found to be more personal in nature, i may stop reading and go away!
Similarly i would not mind people reading my journal. Before that i will always ensure that it is not left in the open!
