That's ridiculous!!!! Many parents are complaining why their kids still can not read even if they already are in the higher grades. Whose fault is this? do we put all the blame to the teacher? what if he has a lot of students in the class?
Do you think parents has no obligation to help their kids learn how to read because it is the teachers responsibility since they are paid for that job? I often heard this comment. It's the teacher's responsibility because they are paid for it.
Do you agree with this?

contact time between students and teachers is limited. the teachers alone should not be blamed for the low reading performance of the kids. that is why there are parent-teacher association because they are supposed to be partners in educating the child. the school curriculum needs to be reviewed also. how much time is allocated for the reading subject?

That's right!! you have good points in here. Parents and teachers should work hand in hand... not only the teachers would be striving hard to help the child learn how to read.. parents should help too. I think, teachers are bored when kids don't learn how to read?? lol.. that's why they let them pass? hehehe.. I hope not.
thanks for the reply

What you say is true, to a point, but I have friends who are school teachers and they are very frustrated. They have curriculum that they are supposed to teach but then they turn around and tell the teachers to stop and help them study for the standardized achievement tests. Schools with high scores on these get more government funding.
Learning to pass these tests take time, so the teacher are forced to send a ridiculous amount of work home, with little time to explain it. Parents who don't know the work or are limited in time, amongst other problems, are forced to teach these kids and work with them.
I can tell you that my dance students, sometimes have as much as up to 4 hours of homework. That is so outrageous!! How are these kids supposed to study, have down time from school, be a part of extracurricular activities or have after school jobs, which I was able to do all of the above and still maintain high honors in school. That was not so much to my effort but that school was about learning to learn, not to learn to pass a test for funding.
My one friend, who is a school teacher, is quitting public schools and going into tutoring. She is so frustrated and she is an excellent teacher.
Many parents have been turning to home schooling and cyber schools just to get their kids out of public school and the mounds of homework. It's not like all that homework is helping. Homework means nothing if the child does not understand what they are supposed to do.
That's why places like Sylvan learning schools are popping up all over the place because parents are so frustrated for their children and their struggles. Funding for arts is bad, too. Kids who can't learn to be creative will never be the future inventors of products, medicines, and other things that we need in life.
Imagine if the artificial heart had never been discovered because the man who created it had not learned to be a thinker. They are teaching kids less to think and more to just memorize.
My husband's first cousin, who was a teacher, retired and is back to teaching, says the changes are incredible and horrible. He is hoping to work in private schooling as there it's not as much of an issue as in public school, but most kids attend public schools.
I just don't see a bright future for US public schools, for the most part. It's a scary thought.

there are homeworks to do and kids are expected to do these works at home. however, parents are not around to follow up and monitor their kids; maybe they are still out there working. i had students before who helped their parents by working for a pay after school. thus they had no more time nor energy to study at night. poverty is also a factor in the low school or reading performance off the students.

a person's education is the responsibility of himself...he has no one to blame but himslef....the parents and teachers are there to help and guide the person towards attaining his/her goal....working on it is ones responsibility....you may ask how about the young ones...those who don't "know" what they are doing yet...you would be surprise to know that they do know what they are doing already, whether a person is on first grade or college...they know that they have to study to be able to learn and it is up to them to decide on which path they would take...would they take the path that says i will study for my lessons or the other way around.....even children as young as 4 or 5 years old, find excuses just so they would not do things that are asked of them....we just don't see it because we find it so cute when children say "NO" to what they tell them to do...we take it as a sign of their independence or a sign that they are starting to use words to communicate to us.....we focus on the cuteness and not on the reality that they are just trying to avoid responsibility at an early age...

You are exactly right!! I agree with you/ But it is the responsibility of the parents to teach their children to be responsible in everything that they do. Teachers are just following up what the parents started at home. When it comes to reading, the parents also should assist their children, not putting all the responsibility to the teachers only.
I won't agree for the teacher to let the kids passed without knowing how to read. however, if the kid is in his class for more than a year and yet, don't know how to read.. that is something terrible.
thanks for replying!!!

I don't teach school, but dance. Anyway, I did help at school by tutoring some kids. I had some in 5th grade who were so bad, they could barely do second grade reading!! How the heck do you get to fifth grade if you can't read? It makes me sick!!
Schools in the US are going down and I don't blame the teachers but the administration and parents.

Oh!! really!! that is bad!! I could not believe too that here in US there are kids who are in 5fth grade who can't read?
What in the world is happening? yes, I agree, we can't blame the teachers if they are trying their best to help the kids learn how to read. But taking it for granted is bad. Well, you are also right!! the administrators will also do something, to help the kids learn how to read Like a special program?
Well, thanks for sharing this facts.
