Have you, or your spouse, ever been laid off?

Unfortunately, my husband and myself have both been through this. In 1998, the company I worked for closed the store in my city. I was the inventory administrator there, and really loved my job. It caused is alot of financial problems when this happend. We lost our house and everything.
Then in 2002, the mill that my husband worked in closed down. Fortunately, they paid for him to go to school and learn another trade. We had to sell our home and move to another state after this one.
So, has anybody else suffered through this? What did you have to do afterwards? What all changed?

indeed, over the years we have suffered some layoffs from work... some long periods of unemployment and what is termed "dislocated" where the business is closed down. The last one was a doctor's office where the doctor decided to close his practice and he himself work for a company.
looking back it was a good thing actually - because of the distance that had to be traveled daily for that job (130 miles round trip) and the wages that were barely over minimum wage, it just would not have worked out with the rising cost of fuel.

fortunately, with God's grace and mercy, me and my hubby never experience being laid off before... we struggle and both of us are working full-time to fulfill our daily needs and living expenses... we have mortgage and car loan to pay off... so i really pray to God that He will always give me health and provide me and my hubby jobs that we need... we are grateful that God always answer our prayers for this one... take care and have a nice day...

My wife was working at a meat packing factory years ago that went on strike. After a few weeks strike funds were gone and the company began laying people off including my wife. There was restaraunt next door so she applied there when she was liad off and has been there for 25 years now. So she was lucky as she was never out of a job for a long period and she had no experience anywhere else.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi There,
This can be devastating that is for sure. I truly sympathize with you. I have never really been through this (I have changed careers but not been through a layoff), but I can see how it could be one of the most stressful things that could happen. It would take away all the security which had been built up over the years.
cheers,

It really does. And, it's hard starting over after you already have everything set up in life such as a house, car, and all that. You need more money after you've been married for years, than you do when just starting out, because you have more bills and everything. But, we will make it somehow.

Hi sunnflr I know the feeling well. And Im so sorry you guys had to go through that. It really is a heartache. Just last year we moved into a real small house because my hubby lost his job and I cant work due to health problems. I just recently got some help from the state. Which isnt much but at least it pays for our food. And right now between food and gas I dont know how people are making it. Ive come to love this little house and its really easy on me to clean. So you be strong. Things always seem to work out some how. Take Care!

I'm glad y'all are making it. My husband likes his new job, but we are still not doing good financially. We keep hoping things will get better. I can't do many jobs either because of health reasons. I was working from home, but don't have a client right now. I hope to get another one soon. The only reason we are hangig in, is because of hubbys OT and taxes.

My previous job went down the tube when the company partnership that owned the place decided to close it down..there was a rumour before it happened what might happen, but it was still a shock to go in ready for work one day and see the other staff sitting around waiting for one of the Directors to break the news to us..I was unemployed for about a month, didn't get any redundancy money, then got the Job I'm still with..I was Living in the area with my Grandfather at the time,so it didn't make a change to my living arrangements, but the new job was 25 miles away,as opposed to about 6...After a month or so of commuting,I got an apartment a lot closer, and since that I've bought my house, a bit closer still..

Well, I'm sorry it happened, but it seems like things are settled down for you again, so that's good.
We hope to move back to Georgia one day. My husband just has to get more training and get his journeyman card, and then he will have more options. Until then we will just stay here in Alabama I reckon. Unless something else happens.

My Fiance was laid off from last winter from his dream job. New owners bought the company and systematically dropped the axe on all of the employees that had originally worked there - my Fiance being the last. Luckily, he found another great job a few weeks later and we didn't feel the financial burden for long. I have only ever quit jobs, never been fired or laid off.

Yes, we were both laid off just a few months before our daughter's wedding - not a good time!

I was just laid off about 3 months ago. It took me close to 2 months to find another job. I had tons of interviews as well as spent a lot of time sending out resumes. Finally I started working at a local meat manufacturing plant. I enjoy the work and the people but the hours are not always full time and they are second shift which I do not prefer. Don't misunderstand I will do whatever it takes to keep the house operating. I was lucky my lay off came at tax time so we had some extra cash around to keep us afloat. I am very happy to report that I am working and still interviewing to see if there is something better out there for me.
I am sorry that you lost so much when you went through your lay off. I hope it will be smooth sailing for you in the future. I will have to keep you in my prayers.

My husband was laid off right after New Years until the end of February he was one of the few they called back. He has been working for them for quite awhile and is an honest faithful employee. To bad I can not say that about his company. He is now the only one doing the job that 2 people were doing, they took away vacation and they are not paying holidays. I just got him an interview at my place of employment for weekend work. It is ashame that people have to work 2 jobs. Heck I would be out working a second job if my job didnt consist of being on call 24/7. I do have faith that somewhere something will work out really well and in the long run we will be just fine.

Yes, it is sad that it takes so much to live these days. My husband and I were talking about that the other day. When we first got married, 17 years ago, we couldn't imagine making what he makes now. But, today it's not enough for us to live on!
I hope your husband can find something that is better for him, a place that treats their employees better.

Actually, i had a job last year and was told about this time that I would not be kept on permanently. I was not very happy about this, although the people i worked with had no respect for me so in a way it was good. In short, I started making money doing what I like on the internet. I could use more money, but for the time being it is ok.

same thing happened to me. i was working for a linen company i NY state and the plant that they had taken over shut down leaving 30 employees without work. and heres the kicker. the company was renting out the building from the original owners who had the same type of buisness that closed just before they took over and told us that we were being kept on so that that we could keep our jobs and that we were going to be there perminantly. then they decided to buy a place on one of the state routes and refurbish it and told us anyone that wanted to move there could do so. then after a couple of months they desided to close our plant, restaff the new place with different employees and leave us laid off and looking for work. was not a fun situation. thank god my aunt had a bakery that she owned or i would have been jobless for quite a while
