My baby turns on his tummy!

My 3 1/2 months old boy started turning from his back to his tummy on his own last week, but now, it's causing problems for bedtime;as soon as i put him down in his crib, he proceeds to turn on his tummy, but once on his tummy, he can't turn back on his back and he won't sleep on his tummy! so now i have to put these two thick blankets on each side of him, to keep him from turning on his tummy, or else he'll never fall asleep! Anyone got any tips as how to deal with this? Is it normal that he won't sleep on his tummy?

Maybe it's just not as comfortable as he likes or he just is frustrated that he can't get back on his back. He shouldn't be sleeping on his tummy anyway. With the blankets there is a potential SIDS problem as well. You will have to keep monitoring him. Once he learns to roll back, you won't have to worry as much anymore.

They do not know what causes SIDS this is a precaution, myself I believe it is the baby just stops breathing in thier sleep. I believe it is some kind of sleep apnea and they have no way of narrowing it down. The number of deaths in the United states is about 2500, although it is alot of innocent deaths, it really isnt for the amount of children born each year. for all we know it could have been some kind of allergic reaction to a fabric softner. It is one of those things we just will never find out. Just watch your baby closely, Your baby is at the age that he/she will be all over the crib. Use your judgement you are a good parent and I know because you came asking for advice when you felt confused.

My youngest daughter only slept on her stomach. No bashing please! For the first 2 weeks after she was born she would only sleep for 20 minutes on her back and then be up for 3 hours sleep 20 minutes be up 3 hours. I had literally no sleep. My mother and mother in law came and my mother in law put her on her stoumach and slept for 7 hours! I would go to Walmart or babies are us and get that postioner thing that keeps the baby in one spot on there back or side.... Other then that, I hope he doesnt keep wakin up every time he moves.

Years ago they suggested to lay them to sleep on thier bellies. They thought the chocking hazard was much greater when on thier backs. My youngest son the told me to lay him on his back. Needless to say we had many sleepless nights. When he rolled onto his belly he would scare himself being able to grab the sheets and with matresses being plastic I think it kept him up at night. He ended up being a bed baby, we needed our sleep. I also find that lots of babies are very comfy when on thier bellies and knees with thier little toush way up in the air. God I miss watching a beborn sleep so precious they are.

It's a pretty normal stage to go through. He'll eventually get used to sleeping on his tummy and won't scream to be rolled over (do lots of tummy time during the day). It took my youngest about 2 weeks to get the hang of rolling back onto her back and to sleep on her tummy. In that 2 weeks I had to pretty much sit next to her bassinet and roll her back to her side or back every time so she would sleep. And, in my experience with my 4 kids, once they learn to roll there is no keeping them on their backs. My son (who is now 6) and my youngest daughter (who is now 2) both started rolling back to front at 3 months old. At 3 1/2 months they were both sleeping on their stomachs all the time.

Baby in a wedge - Helps keep them on their back
I bought a wedge for my daughter. It has foam on either side of the baby so that they stay on their side or back. It is adjustable for different size babies and if you want then on their side or back. My daughter used hers until she was about 5 months old. After that she would roll over and flip out of it. I think I have a picture of her in it. I will try and attach it. She always most comfortable in this position, but most people put it on the babies a little lower.

I have an 8 month old huge baby and I had the same problem a few months back..babies differ in some ways though.. What I did was when he was at that stage, turning on his tummy, I put him in soft ( but not too soft) bed so he could practice turning both sides..It's a little scary this stage if your kid falls asleep on his tummy and cannot turn back yet, so be aware..Let him toss and turn, toss and turn, and sometimes he will be able to circle the whole bed just by doing that..This is a normal stage wherein a baby learns how to turn..He's finding ways of his own on how to accomplish this great new adventure for him. Just be mindful and put pillows all around him (but not too near him) so he wont fall off the edge..And most especially, dont go off and do something else while you leave your kid alone..You wouldn't know when he will learn to grab those pillows and hug it and it might go to his face and since he's still a baby couldn't get it off his face..Let him on the bed and help him occasionally when his turning, coz sometimes one hand gets stuck under and he needs help in getting it out..Lastly, enjoy, this is one of the special moments in your kid's stage..If you can, take a picture and savor the moment when he finally turn on his back..

Oh God!!Yes it perfectly normal for the little one to turn on his tummy.Try patting him sing something anything that you usually do to get him to sleep.Once you start doing this he will get a signal to go to sleep even if he is on his tummy.BUT PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL HERE. My dayghter when started turning slept on her tummy!!!I just made it sure that her head was sideways.Well leave him for sometime there and see he should go off to sleep. Do u wrap him tightly???That may help too!! It always better to leave them on their own and them keep an eye on them slyly. That will work. Try to get help from your doctor nurses too.] God Luck!!

thx for your answer...but you see, although everything you said is good advice, it will not work with my son. First of all, he can't stand to be wrapped up in a blanket or sheet, he used to remove the blankie himself when he was only 2 days old at the hospital, swear to God! And, he usually falls asleep on his own in his crib, so no special song or story there either. But you did give me good advice anyways and i thank you!

With my babies I always put them on their sides with a blanket or something behind them so they couldn't roll around then I would put them on their tummies for a few weeks then their backs, I kept them that way just circling them on their backs and sides then their tummies I was always afraid of them spitting up an choking on it. With one of my kids I had to tilt the head of his bead a little because he was allergic to everything and he would throw up in his sleep and it was just a mess. They all made it through babyhood and are now healthy young and adult teenagers.

thx for your response. My son used to sleep always on his right side, not because i placed him that way, but because he would position himself like that. And then i had to do something about it, cuz his head was getting more and more deformed, being flat on the right side and round on the left. So then he started to sleep on his back, with his head either one side or the other.

We had the same exact problem. Our son, Sam, used to flip over on his tummy. But then he started to sleep like that as well. It bothered me alot! But he's almost two years old now and he STILL sleeps like that on his knees on his tummy. It's the strangest thing I have ever seen, but whatever makes him comfy is good with me!

thats tough I would say during the day give him as much "belly time" as he will tolerate. Thats all you can really do and soon he will be rolling every possible way :) Good luck with the little man!
