I just read a news story that claims babies need to hear 30,000 plus words a day in their native language in order to learn to communicate effectively. Isn't that amazing?
Honestly, that's not a problem for most of us gals, cause studies show that we speak up to 50,000 words daily. So, maybe babies were put into the right hands. Studies show that most guys only speak about 10,000 words daily. While women can say up to 5 times that many words daily. I'm sure guys are just thinking their conversations internally, but we just vocalize our thoughts more.
So, did you know this little factoid about babies and speech? It's based on a real study. I was surprised. Tell me what you think about it.

First of all let me say women say more then men because we have to repeat every thing we say two or three times before a man hears us. There vocabulary consists of "what" "no" "I want to do it" "I'm hungary".
Anyway Thats a lot of words. I wonder how many we actually say a day? 30,000 seems like soooo many words. I would love to see the link for this study if you could post it I would appreciate it.
So I guess I have to start talking more (just in case). Just what my husband needs right lol!

I knew it was over a few thousand words, but its nice to know a more approximate number.
Also I think some of what you say is erroneous. Dads could also say plenty to their kids to match the number... about the kids, about themselves, about family, about their day, even teaching about surroundings.

With my school major, we discuss these things all the time. This however is not something that I knew or heard of. It was always just a known fact that children need to be talked to, read to, sung to, etc for them to learn how to talk. However we were never given any word limit or anything. It's just drilled into our heads that children need to hear speech. This is interesting though. It's amazing how much speech is really important.

The first thing I thought when I read the title is "How many words do I speak in a day?" the thing is there is no way to find out. I could record everything I say, but I could not be bothered to count through all the words to find out. I wish there was a pedometer to count words. It is quite a large amount and I would not have thought it would have been so much, although thinking about it, it is quite realistic.
