Whether ups is must for computer?

Whether ups is must with computer? why? How far its useful for computer.. how much may be the backup timing.. Someone said, UPS is not at all required.. when ever power went of, once it comes back, if you run your scandisc (it will run automatically) then nothing will affect your system. some others use to said, that even if you have a UPS, it will helps you, once the power went off, it will work till you close all your programmes whcih is opened, and shut down, this will not give you much back up like you can work till the power comes may be for couple or hours or so.. some other people use to tell that, if you go for a higher capacity of UPS, then you can use the system till the power come back, even though if it took half a day.. but it will be costly, and also it will took more maintenance cost.. So, please advise me about the UPS..
