Licking the bowls!

Last Sunday morning my granddaughter and I baked cupcakes. When I was a kid there was nothing more fun then waiting for mom to finish up something she was going to bake then she would let us lick the bowls...beaters and spoon! We got every morsel of batter off those three things. Well I was tempted to let my granddaughter lick the batter bowl but remembered how they now say that you can't do that because of ecoli in raw eggs....but I did let her lick off the frosting spoon as I knew it didn't have eggs in it. Did you do that as a kid and do you still do it now? I wonder why when we did it we never got sick?

I'm still a die hard bowl licker! That's my favorite part of baking. I know I shouldn't because of the chance of the bacteria but that's so rare I don't worry about it. I think though when we were younger we didn't care as much about bacteria. We got dirty, played with stuff we really shouldn't have, and I can pretty much be sure we stuck stuff in our mouths that should never ever have been there. Today we're too clean so we are more seceptable to bacteria and all the bad stuff floating about.

I think that is right.....we have become so clean we can't build up a resistance to bacteria.

I have always been grossed out by the thought of eating raw eggs so I never licked the bowl when mom made a cake. I also never eat cookie dough, but all my friends claim it is delicious. Ewwwww! I don't let my kids do it either, but they line up when I am making frosting!

I think we never got sick because this didn't happen every day and there wasn't a lot to lick :)

Ive always licked and still lick the bowl after making anything. I sometimes let my kids as well. I have heard so many things that if I were to stop eating/doing everything that I've read or been told that will make you sick, I would be afraid of EVERYTHING. Things have gotten crazy in just the years I have been alive. Im 23.

Yes, I did it as a child and as an adult I still do it. My children all did it and still do it and my grandson does it also. I guess either we were and are still lucky or just like other things that they say are bad for us then later say they made a mistake is the same thing with the eggs. I remember also seeing on tv and hearing of athelets drinking raw eggs, now I won't go that far with the eggs.

I think it is sort of like raw oysters, they just slide down the throat along with the whites of the egg. I agree with you about the YUCK on the swallowing of the eggs and I will also add a yuck to raw oysters. hahaha

I do that all the time that my mother makes cakes. My mother is a baker and when she is baking her cakes to sell I enjoy "washing" her utensils but not before taking all the frosting that was left over and eating it. It's bad to eat so much sugar but the frosting taste so good that I can't help it. It's like it's looking at me and telling me to eat it.

I did as a child and I still do. I have never gotten sick off of it and neither have my children. I never thought about the raw eggs could have ecoli in them. Maybe our immune systems were stronger years ago I don't know.

They say that we're so clean now that we have lost some of our resistance because we don't have the opportunity to build up an immunity! Go figure!

I think the ecoli risk is overated. i really wouldn't worry too much about it. I never heard of anybody getting sick from licking the batter or the beater or whatever. I'm sure one or two little licks isn't going to hurt anything.

I wouldn't think a couple of licks would hurt anyone very much!

I couldn't count the times as a kid that we licked the bowl, beaters and spoon, and if ma wasn't looking might just swipe our finger through the batter itself. I couldn't count those times as I said, but I could count the times I got sick. That would be zero. Ma always made cakes from scratch and always used raw eggs.

I honestly think that the doctors and scientists nowadays are going way overboard with all these new health "risks". I'll tell you why.... I am going to be 31 in september, and I've been licking the bowl from cake batter, cookie mix, frosting, whatever kind of batter you can think of when it comes to baking and making a mess lol. I have not once gotten sick from that, and my younger brother who is now 28 also has been doing that, and also never got sick. Now my mother has 2 small children, aged 10 and 8, and they have been doing that since they have been old enough to eat "adult" foods and get off teh bottles and processed baby food. They have never gotten sick yet either. And let me tell you, my mother bakes with alot of eggs. Reminds me of when I was younger, I used to har people say not to eat raw, uncooked cake batter, because the mixture can cause you to grow a sort of worm or bugs in your stomach. i go to the doctor every 6 months or so since i was 5, and i've yet to have any bugs or worms in my belly. I honestly never really listen when doctors and scientists come up with these things, because what they claim is bad today, they may very well come back next week and say is good, they don't even know themselves, they test their theories on aminals, not humans, so what is good for animals (or bad for them) doesn't always mean that it will have the same result on humans, no matter how closely related we are to their test animals

I think they go overboard too! Then we jump on the bandwagon and like sheep follow what they tell us....now we're too clean! LOL

i remember my mother letting me do it back when i was a kid...but i would never do it now...not with all the problems that have been cropping up with food poisoning and these diseases that keep popping up. its just become way to dangerous to eat things like that raw. its a novel idea...its a good memory. but i would be too afraid that the memory would become more like a bad nightmarish memory.

I always use to lick the beaters and bowl and so did our kids when they were small. My daughter recently told me that she let our grandson lick the bowl when she made brownies and he didn't get sick. I don't recall one time one of our kids was sick from doing this and neither was I. I don't bake any longer because if I make something I like, such as brownies or cookies, I'd eat them all.

Oh no, I have had food poisoning very bad twice in my lifetime; there is no way I allow my kids to lick the bowls. Sometimes they just want to eat batter...not the baked product; with that said, if they want to do that, it is fine, BUT no eggs go into the batter :)

we always did it as kids and i've done it with my kids. sometimes i'll avoid it, but i have a hard time denying them the same pleasures that we had as kids. that was the best part of cooking with mom. and who can resist a taste of raw cookie dough?

I still do this LOL do does my son, we don't get sick and hope not to. I never thought about it until I posted a similar discussion months back asking whether you could get sick from licking the spoon or bowl. They say from the raw egg you could get salmonella (sp?).

I have always licked the bowl and spoon whether it was cookie dough cake mix whatever I let my kids do it and none of us have ever gotten sick. I don't do it if it's a hot day and the dough or whatever has been sitting out all day that would make ya sick. I figure as long as the eggs are fresh and I don't let them set out all day I'm good to go.
