Though many people do not know this, the smurfs get their coloring from the light refraction in the atmosphere. Thus your answer is not so simple as to just name a color, I would have know what the day was like, for instance on a cloudy day they would turn sunset pink, but on a clear day first thing in the morning, they would turn sunrise orange. Now night time would be a totally different story, I mean lets say that you choked one around the full moon, the he would actually glow a soft hue and yet near the new moon, he would actually turn eclipse black. Also, the day of the week does play a role as well, since the smurfs start their week on Wednesday, they are refreshed and thus a lighter coloring would be gained by choking one. However if you were to wait until say late Saturday afternoon, under the same conditions the coloring would be much darker. If this does not satisfy your needs, you might try reading "How to become a smurf in 10 easy steps".

In the situation you just described, it would be according to how long the smurf could hold his/her breath. You see, that happens to be the exact location of a sunken Spanish galleon. I would send the smurf/smurfette down to retrieve a board so that I could let him/her paddle me to the shore to get a light to see what color the little critter had turned. I would utilize the firefly s, but since there was no bait, the fish jumped out of the water and ate them out of desperation. Oh and by the way, you didn't mention if it was cloudy or not. If it was cloudy then their color would be dark purple though you could not tell it.

Tuesday night cresent moon. About 9 pm. High tide, Wind blowing strong. Lighting bugs every where. 30 miles out in a boat, no poles, no bait you've run out of gas and no paddles or anything to get to shore with. What color would the smurf or smurfette turn then?
