Ducks in the city.

My heart got a little fuller yesterday. I was shopping in the city when I looked out a window and saw a momma duck and 8 ducklings trying to cross a busy road. I and another customer ran outside to try to help. A man came up and assisted. He got the ducks out of the road, but they went the wrong way and ended up where they started, but momma duck kept wanting to cross the road. Apparently, they got a little lost with all of the rain we've had lately and were trying to get to a lake not far from the store. Someone ran and got a box and we all put the ducklings in it and tried to catch the momma, but she wouldn't have anything to do with that! I saw a police officer not far away and ran to get his help. In the meantime, the person with the box of babies took them across the street while the first man stopped traffic. Momma duck finally made her way across the street because she heard her babies over there. The police officer told them not to let the babies out of the box yet, because he wanted to take the whole gang to the lake and out of harm's way. It was quite an adventure! I took pictures of momma and babies but have to upload them from my cell phone first. I'll get them on myLot as soon as I can. It was so adorable and sweet! Anyone else have a story like this one? I'd love to hear it. Please share. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear from another animal lover. Animals have fended for themselves for a long time, but sometimes they need a little human intervention. I'm glad to hear that you got the little pups out in time.

I remember stopping my car to let a Canada Goose and her family of goslings cross the road in the city. The interesting part of this story is that the Gander was there too and they both walked the goslings across. I can't remember the number of goslings but There was 6 or 8. Canada Geese are very good Parents and will give their lives to keep the goslings safe.

Please do not call "Canada Geese" Canadian geese. The proper name is Canada Geese. These geese are not Canadian geese because they breed in the USA and in Europe as well. The name is just a name and does not designate place of Birth or Country of Origin!

I know all about Canadian geese. I live on a lake and we have a darling pair who nest there every Spring. It's so heartwarming to see papa goose protecting the eggs from other geese, dogs, ducks, whatever, while mama goose sits on them. Then, when the babies hatch, seeing them swim everywhere together is so touching.

What a wonderful, adorable story! Thank you for sharing it! It's not as interesting, but I was really touched one evening as I was coming home from work. A mother duck and her babies were trying to cross a busy road and a man was stood in the middle, stopping traffic, while the line of duck babies waddled behind their mother to get to the other side. It was so cute. Bless that man!

Yes, it's good to know that there are caring people still in this crazy world. I think the little ducklings walking in a line behind momma duck is the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Well I'll certainly never eat duck again! I used to love the taste, but I think I'd be too upset to eat it again. They're too beautiful!

what a wonderful experience! I love ducks, they are so lovely. :) I haven't had any story like this one, but I ever read on a certain site, where a duck mommy crossing the road with her ducklings and some of her children fell off the road (into a hole) and a person saw them and rescued the ducklings. would love to see the pictures from you soon. :)

Out where I live we have a rural highway 65 mph 2 lane right by our cottage on the lake. Theres a section that goes over the dam that connects the lake. One say I saw a turtle crossing the road and thought it was going to get ran over. I pulled over and tried to go and pick it up but couldn't because of traffic. However, I did stand there and point at it to oncomming cars so they would avoid it and it finally made its way across the highway to the other side of the lake. I felt pretty good.

Awww! That's so sweet! Poor little turtles rarely make it across busy roads, especially when the speed limit is rather high. That was a very brave and kind thing you did for the little guy! Bravo!

In Columbia, where I work - near Robert Fulton Drive, we have geese. It is awesome to see when the babies are born (anywhere from 6-8 in a litter) and how Dad and Mom get them from place to place. Traffic has literally been stopped with them crossing the road on Columbia Gate Way Drive as Father (or Mother Goose) leads the babies across the busy road with Mother (or Father Goose) brining up the rear. It is a site to see!

Oh, I know where you're talking about, onetrack! That IS a busy road. I'm glad to not hear that any have been squished in the road. It is so precious to see them all in a row. Momma and poppa geese are such good parents! And they mate for life, which I think is wonderful.

I think ducks and duckling are cute. I saw sometime a lots of number of ducks being shepherd by a man go to the lake or at side of the road. they are belong to a farm, at same size with no duckling. I hope you can soon upload the picture.

Oh this is all very nice to read. That was very kind of you and your friend.Hope more people learn to be more humble helpfull. It is sad to know that the natural environment is being robbed from these creatures.Yet this was great work. Well, I am quite afraid of animals, so i keep myself at a distance always.I can share an incident with you.Once while my pal and I were in college, we went on a ride on her bike.My friend is a great animal lover. While we were crossing the roads we saw a puppy cross by and stopped in the middle of the road. He started staring at us, wagging his tail.We both found it soo cute and I would have moved ahead after that but not my friend. She just hopped off the bike least realising I was behind and I went bang on the road. She ran after me but not before clutching the puppy to her heart.I really did not know what to say.I do admire her for her quality though!!!

We have park here with a pond in it with all kind of ducks and the officers are always haveing to chase them back into the park. Just last week a mama and her babies come up out of the sewer pipe and had to be helped back to the park. The street by the park is the busiest one in town. My kids love going up to feed the ducks so I am glad we have something like that. Happy to hear you were willing to help out.

That must've been something to see... ducks popping out of the sewer! I'm always willing to help a creature in distress. We made this world that they're having trouble in, so I think it's our duty to help them when needed.
