A public school wants to go to wearing uniforms like a private school..

My son school is deciding to do this.. I don't agree with it... I believe that if you are a public school then you should wear suitable clothes.. If they want to do this, then they should change their name to a private school.. I am very uncomfortable with this decision... As a parent, I feel strongly against this. A public should stay public and a private should stay private... If a public school is deciding to do this, then maybe they need to consider being a private school. My sister was telling me that, they may be doing this because they want to reduce the bullying in schools... But the way that I feel is, even if you wear private school uniforms, then you can still get teased... I believe that this school is just trying to make a point out of themselves...

I've always gone to public schools and they have always said that we should wears uniforms. It's not only about the bullying but also about the stealing because whenever a kid wears something really nice some other kid might want it and end up stealing it. It kind of sucked to wear uniforms but I got used to it. The high school I went to also required uniforms but I didn't have much problems because I bought some snazzy suits so that I could wear them and like hot and sexy. LOL. But yeah I didn't agree with it either but there was not other choice.

Yes sure... You turned a situation into a good one.. I am just wondering, since they want the students to wear these uniforms, then whom is paying for this??

For the clothes? Well my parents of course. But our uniform was really simple. Just a white shirt and black, or navy pants. If a student went to my high school without a uniform then they would have to get a sticker that says they don't have a uniform and they would have to wear the sticker all day. Oh and you couldn't wear sneakers. The shoes had to be black. So I wore black Timbs when I went there. By the way what kind of uniform are they going to put for your son?

our school had us vote on this issue this past school year. it is a public school and i was very much opposed to school uniforms. if i wanted my son in a uniform he would be in private school which by the way i cannot afford. most of the students voted against it, most of the teachers voted for it and most of the parents voted for it. so essentially it was passed but because the students were so against it they decided not to do it for now. if it does pass at some time in the future i will send my son in his regular clothes and if they send him home i will home school him. if they keep on taking our rights away what the heck is going to be next?

in our place both private and public school had uniform, they may be different in reappearance but they had. so i can't relate very well why the public school can't have? what is actual difference between private and public school dress in your locality.

our schools were debating making it mandatory-to stop fighting among kids over clothes trends.it got voted down, some parents couldn't afford the uniforms. that's usually stops uniform programs though.

Yes, they need to do this. One thing I hate about the school system is that they come up with all these wild ideas for a student like field trips and other leisure activities, and they want a parent to come out and pay for all these things. They act as if money grows on trees. Sometimes, parents have to work and is unable to get off their job to participate in PTA'S and such... Then they always seem to ask for so much money.. About every other week or so.. This happened at my son's Early Head Start School.. I felt like they was trying to drain my wallet.. This drove me crazy! Since he has been going to public schools this has lessened... If the school wants to come up with any ideas that they THOUGHT of then they need to plan to dish out of their pocket the funds to cover what they want... Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy for my kids to go on field trips and all of the fun things, but I just don't want to see other parents breaking their pockets just to support this habit..

Yes, I agree.. If they want to come up with this idea, then they need to pay for all the uniforms... This is their decision not the parents... Or if they want their child to wear a uniform then they pay for it... For the ones that don't they can continue to wear what they feel is okay.. But I know that the school system is not going to do this..

I know what you are saying, but quite frankly, with some of the trash kids wear these days to school and the parents allowing it - like the girls in super short shorts and skimpy, strapless tops showing nearly everything, and the boys wearing their pants so low on their hips that their you-know-what shows.. I'd have to go along with some kind of dress code.

Here in the UK all senior schools (11-16yr olds)have uniforms whether public or private. Even a lot of the junior and infant schools have them. I don't think it stops bullying but it does stop the fashion 'bullying' where those who can't afford designer label clothing are picked on. For some children it can make school a traumatic experience! At one time it stopped a lot of bad behaviour out of school too, as you knew it would be reported to the school! Nowadays letting your school down doesn't seem to bother anyone! It's no more expensive and can really save you money as the clothes are cheaper to buy than 'fashionable' clothing. It also saves time in the mornings. You don't have to decide what you are going to put on and you know that your friends will be wearing the same as you. It's a lot easier and you don't get an irrate teenage daughter yelling because you've put the one thing she MUST wear today in the washing! I wore school uniform all my life and I've worn them for work too and I can honestly say I never found it a drawback. It certainly doesn't make children any less individual or anything similar. My children had no problem accepting wearing uniform but their Dad was in the RAF so it was 'normal' behaviour. I find it hard to see what you find objectionable about it or why you think only Private schools should have them!

It would be a boring world if we all agreed with each other! I was just trying to give a few positive things about uniforms! I'd have thought them just as valid in the US as anywhere else in the world!

Because I am from the United States! The schools that I have been to have all been public schools... They have two private schools in my city. This school that my son goes to, is the only school that wants the kids to wear private uniforms... I find this to be ironic.. This is something that has never happened before, and it seems far fetched.. I am going to stand strong on my opinion as you do with yours.. I can't change the way that you feel, and you can't change the way that I feel..

Toledo Public Schools in Ohio went to wearing uniforms several years ago and as a teacher, at the time, I did not agree with the idea. I still do not think that it is necessary but the "powers that be" feel that it decreases the amount of teasing and bullying and such that goes on due to the differences in the clothing that the students wear. I found that what it became for me was a discipline problem when the students did not wear the proper uniforms and it was up to me to write them up for discipline or otherwise turn them in. It didn't matter to me that they didn't have their shirts tucked in or that the shoes they had on were not of the type in the "rules". I wanted students who were there, on time to class and willing to listen to the lessons and do the required work. I agree that it does look nice for all But I did not agree with the policy of uniforms. I think that the clothing a child wears expresses his or her individuality.

Yes, this is how I feel too. Students should be able to wear regular clothes, wearing private school uniforms in a public school makes a child look like they are in prison...

Hi cream97! I really can't see how wearing uniform could stop or minimize bullying in public schools. All I know is that discipline and strict enforcement of rules and regulations regarding bullying should be enforced. Here in our country, public and private school students wear uniforms but both schools have some reported cases of bullying. Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting!

Kids are often picked on and made fun of because their parents can't afford to buy them expensive clothing or won't allow them to wear suggestive clothing. When there is a uniform dress code, all the children wear the same think and it eliminates one avenue of bullying. It's been found where it has been tried, to work quite well.

Me either, I truly don't believe that it is going to stop bullying either. I don't know why others seem to think so... If you ask me, bullying can happen anywhere, without you wearing a uniform...

Here in Australia public schools have had compulsory uniforms for years. I think there were a couple of reasons for it. The first reason was bullying. Kids were bashing other kids over a pair of reeboks. Others were being teased because their parents either couldn't afford or would allow their kids to wear name brand clothing. By introducing a uniform all students wore exactly the same clothing so it eradicated that problem. The second reason is for identification purposes. It's easier for teachers to see if there is a stranger in school grounds because their clothing will be different. During school excursions it's also easier for teachers to round up children when they are all wearing uniforms. Personally, I agree with it.

Either way, bullying is and can still take place while wearing a uniform.. Their reasons may be of factual evidence, but it is not always quite true.. To me this is a waste of time.. If they do this at his school, then they mine as well become a private school...

I definitely agree to this. Kids nowadays would prefer to wear there own clothes that express the person that they are. Forcing kids to wear uniforms tends to only make a child rebellious. Kids seems to adapt better in school when they are able to express themselves, and people seem to understand more about that person from the way they dress. Why would you force a child to wear something to make them feel uncomfortable. The school themselves will find that children's grades will drop, their attendance will become less frequent, and their attitudes will change. This is not good for a school that has not been under uniform policy before.

Hi Cream, In my country both public and private wear school uniform, so It is quite different for me. But it may help reduce the bullying to a point. But it is up to the bullies to stop if they want too.

I think they need to draw a line and inforce it with whats appropriate to wear to a public school. I don't think they should have to wear a uniform, because yes that would be a private school. But it is getting out of control how teenagers are dressing these days, not so much the boys as the girls.

Uniforms are a great idea, we had them and it made things easier and more affordable. No fighting over what to wear and running around looking for a specific shirt -- just grab your uniform kids and lets go. To me, the uniform does not define whether a school is public or private its just that the private schools have been using them longer.

if you make them wear uniforms then you are taking away the right to freedom of expression. We have uniforms at my school and they stink. they are hot and heavy and in the summer we cant wear shorts so we like rot in the heat cuz the school wont get ac

I wore a uniform from K through 12 in a Catholic school and had no trouble at all with freedom of expression. I could easily project who I was beyond the saddle shoes, blue knee socks, plaid jumpers, red bow tie and peter pan color. lol Most schools today are going with a decent docker style pair of pants and polo shirts.

Well, I have been hearing of a lot of schools switching to this ideal lately, and not sure why they are choosing this, unless it is too eliminate some of the other type of clothing out there that could be Gang colors, or clothes that might seem to offend or be inappropriate as well. Personally when they choose to switch to this I feel they should offer help for any parents that cannot afford this additional expense, or provide the clothes for Free to those ones as well. I have seen the costs of some of the uniforms they choose and especially in today's economy I wonder how parents can afford to keep on doing this as well.

I totally agree with you. I think that is absolutely crazy. I went to a Catholic School (I'm not Catholic, but i still went to the school) and we wore uniforms, but that's a different story. The school always had uniforms. I agree that it is not right for a PUBLIC school to suddenly switch to uniforms. For the record, there was plenty of bullying at the school I attended, where we all wore uniforms.

I don't know what country you from but in our country many public schools are wearing uniforms, wearing of uniforms is one way of identifying students by it's school institutions. many parents here agree that wearing of uniforms is one way of minimizing expenses in buying clothing, which i also agree. i know this is not in general because some country don't agree with this.

I don't like that idea. I think kids need to have their individuality. Plus I know uniforms are very expensive, many people can not afford that. When kids can where what ever they want parents can work with what ever budget they have instead of being forced to pay high uniform prices. Kids are going to pick on other kids weather they are wearing uniforms or not. That is just silly. Not to mention it will only hurt the retail businesses even more if no one is buying clothes. I think it is a rediculas idea, that makes no sense, and it sounds to me like somoene is only looking to make some money by pushing uniforms on to people.

well... in singapore all primary schools and secondary schools have to wear uniforms... i think it is because some families have very little money and some are filty rich... so the rich ones are able to buy really fashionable stuff while the poor ones are wearing the same old shabby clothes... so uniforms are good as they will force them to have the same clothes..

I really don't think this is right. I don't think the school has the right to dictate how the children should dress, beyond a basic dress code. As a parent it is your right to decide what your children to wear, particularly if you are paying for the clothes! Also I have to say, the bullying argument is nonsense. Take it from the fat girl who had to wear a skirt with blouse tucked in in 8th grade, whereas I could have dressed in a more flattering why if I had had the option. When everyone dresses the same, it is much easier to find physical attributes to pick on. So it does not address the bullying issue, just shifts it around a little.
