We’ve had a few tornado warnings here in Missouri and there’s been some that have hit around Missouri. Our neighbor came over the last time and was standing outside talking to me and told me that she and her 2 small children were in the tub just in case it hit. I got to thinking and thought that would actually probably be dangerous. After all you have water pipes, porcelain and other debris that could really hurt you. I would opt for a closet we have in the hallway. No windows, no pipes, nothing that could hurt me. Where would you go for a tornado? What would you consider the safest place in your house? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

My closet, nothing in there but clothes to get thrown around. Some shoes too. But more clothes than anything. No windows, pipes or anything else to worry about and everyone will fit in there.

I think I would have to head for the closet as well. Of course, that means after the storm I would have to come out of the closet. Wait... that doesn't sound right

We had a tornado touch down in Oklahoma last night but it wasn't near me. The safest place for me is my walk in closet in my bedroom. My apartment is I guess what you would call quasi-underground, so that is a plus too. I know to get in long sleeves and pants, and if I can, I would try to pull a mattress on top of me, but I don't think I could manage that.

Hello twoey, I have been thinking also that and make me decide that if ever I will be alone and there is a tornado, when I will hear the warning or serene, I was thinking maybe it would be best for me to run to our neighbor and stay with them..LOL, I don't like to be alone and wanted to have some company if ever!

I've never lived through a tornado, and wouldn't want to, but, I have thought of it. I guess I would go to the basement, under the stairs, and hope the house didn't collapse around me. I don't know how people can live in tornado alley, and live witht the near certainty that a tornado will strike them.

If you don't have a basement in your house, and OLD CAST IRON tub isn't a bad place to hide, if you crouch in it and cover your head with your hands. The new fiberglass ones won't help you. What is safe about them is that the rest of the house can be shredded, but the cast iron tub is less likely to get ripped up and blown away, it also provides protection from the sides and below. A fiberglass tub will just shatter. Getting in the tu is very old school - but unless you are in a basement, you can get ripped away in a storm as easily as your closet can. This is NOT a matter of things falling down on you, like in an earthquake, this is about things being ripped up and blown away.

Exactly cassidy22, I agree. It isn't a matter of things falling down they will, because everything goes sometimes and those of us who have lived in tornado areas know you also have to worry about being impaled by something! Ugh the thought of that! YUK!!

The safest place in my house would definitely be in the basement. I would probably opt to go to the wall in the center, or maybe even closer to the east side of the basement since most of our storms usually come from the west.

I guess I would get in a closet in the hallway if I could make room in there, one of the closets is a linen closet and has shelves, the other is a small coat closet where I keep coats and the vaccuum. My daugther uses her bathtub, it has no windows in there plus she hauls a twin mattress in there to put over her and her son if need be. She used to be able to go to a business that a friends family owned and there was an unused freezer that people would go to. Where I live we mostly have to bother with hurricanes but you never know what mother nature has in store. Be safe.

We have a hallway in the center of the house, and we like you have had several scares this year in NC. I have a queen fold out sleeper that sits in our family room, I have had the kids take the mattress off of it two times this year and put it in the hallway, just in case. I used to not worry about this kind of thing, until Hugo hit, and we had our sons room buckle in, if we had been home like I wanted to be, he could have been killed. Now I don't take any chances, If the sky starts looking like it might be even halfway bad, I prepare.

I agree with you twoey68 a hall closet is probably the best place to be if you cant get to a basement.Myself I would be scared in a basement because the whole house could come down on you. I also live in Missouri, 65 miles south of St. Louis. You have a wonderful evening.

I have a basement with a sauna room that I use for storage, never liked saunas. I store emergency stuff in there, extra food and blankets and about 100 bottles of water. It has a thick opaque window and I can close a wooden cover over it. So that's where I plan to go. I also have the dogs' leashes in there and lots of dog food!

I really don't know where the safest place would be in my house. I would think the washroom, because its in the middle of the house with no outside walls, but then again, we have the washer and dryer in there, and our freezer is in there. I would go to my closet, but then all the stuff I have in there would fall on me..lol. We do have a basement but I've never been in it, I've lived here for 5 yrs, and I've never seen it. First of all, the steps leading down to it are broken, you would fall if you tried to walk on them, and theres so much junk down there, not to mention all the creepy crawlies thats lurking around down there...lol. I always heard to get in the tub too, I don't know if it would be a safe place either.

I'm from Oklahoma and like Missouri tornadoes are a frequent occurrence. I wish I had a storm cellar but not this year. Our scaredy hole is underneath the staircase in our house. It's the only room we have that doesn't have any outer walls. It's cramped as all get out but it works.

Actually if someone doesn't have a basement, the bathtub is the safest if it has no windows..You should also place a mattress over you to protect you from any flying objects..I don't have a basement and that is what I would have to do..

One thing about the bathtub is that it is supposed to be a safe-ish place during a tornado but, I think they suggest that you pull a mattress over your heads while in the bathtub because that will prevent debris from hitting you in the head. As far as my house is concerned, if tornadoes hit, or if we are threatened by them, we have a standing "order" to go to our neighbor's house. Even if they aren't home. They have a basement and have told us to come and to bring our pets as she would not feel comfortable with herself if a tornado did hit and took away our house killing our pets. She wants every living being in my house to be safe and sound. If we didn't have our neighbor's basement to seek shelter in, we would use the closet in our hallway. It is small but, it is the inner most area of our house. No windows and the most likely place in my house to still be standing should everything else be lifted out of the house. Granted, it would probably not still be standing but, it stands the best chance and is the safest place. The only problem is that it would require us to remove everything that is in that closet. I keep all our wrapping paper, shipping boxes, gift bags, etc...and the extra leaf for our dining room table in that closet. So, it would be a mad rush to remove it all and get in before our house left our heads. That reminds me, I need to clean that closet out! Thanks! LOL!

that has me thinking as our next county over in ca had three tornados yesterday and we just do not have tornadoes in southern california at all. I thought about my bathroom but thats not safe. my closet would probably be the safest in my bedroom. no hall closets. just water heater and furnace roomsnot safe there.we sure have no storm cellars like we had' back on the farm in South Dakota years ago. then we lived in tornado alley so expected tornados like here we expect earth quakes.

as much as I remember, we never had torandos in israel... But i think that the safest place might be under a strong table (if you got one) or outside? its pretty hard for me to say because i dont really know what are the consequenses of tornado..

Hello fellow Missourian! I grew up in Southeast Missouri and yes, we too would get tornadoes. However, we had a basement that we would use and I thank the God that we were never hit. But to answer your question, as a kid and even now I'm not so sure even a basement would be sufficient enough to save anyone. Sometimes it does, it just depends you know, it's like play russian roulette. I do strongly feel that our neighbors in Kansas and probably Oklahoma have the right idea. Lots of people would build storm shelters outside a few feet away from there house but still close enough to get to. That has my vote!! I have always felt that storm shelter or cellars whatever you want to call them, I think are the best protection from a tornado. I hope that helps.

Yes, storm shelters are a good idea. I live in Oklahoma, I don't have one myself, but it would be something to think about. My mothers landlord has a storm shelter by their house, and the house my mother lives in, is just across the street from them, so whenever theres a storm they come and get her and take her in there with them. Which I'm glad because I live 25 miles from her and if something happened, I know she's safe, and I don't have to worry.

That's great that your mom has a storm shelter to go to. I now live on the east coast and tornadoes aren't too much of a factor to worry about. There have been some once in a while but we get the hurricanes. And of course if you live on the coast one really has to be careful.
