Until very recently, I collected Ladybird books. they brought back so many memories! My son has one of them now which he carries around everywhere with him, 'Tootles the Taxi'. It's getting really battered and I'm not really looking forward to the day when my applications of sellotape won't hold it together any longer.

Are these Ladybird books the ones like the Penguin books or Scholastic books paper back series? I think the concept of these paper back books are great! Children all over the world who cannot afford to buy more expensive, hardbound but beautiful books can now have a chance to read these lovely editions. More children will be reading. I think, dilapidated books is what makes them special. It makes every bruised book feel they have been really loved by the owner. Don't you think? So, let your son do the natural thing to do! :-)

They are small sized hardbacked, but they are designed to be reasonably priced. Not that some of mine were, older Ladybird books can be very valuable these days! www.ladybird.co.uk/

I love children's books. I hope to publish one myself someday. It will have to be illustrated by someone other than myself though. One book that you mention is truly a classic Maurice Sendak "Where the Wild Things Are" I also really enjoy the work of Chris Van Allsburg ("Jumanji", "The Polar Express")

Hi! I love the LadyBird books too.^_^ I still have mine until today. I have Great Fables and Legends book, the Little Mermaid: A Whale of a Tale episode, A Spelling book and Grammar book, and a StoryTime for 6 Year Olds book. All of these are LadyBird books. The other brand of childrens books that I love is the Grimm's Fairytales. I know that the original Grimms stories are not as lovely and happily ever after but the ones that became fairytales are really good. I have the book set where it has a chest box. It has 6 books and has the Tailor, the Frog Prince and stories like that. The books themselves are hardbound but they have foam on the side of the covers so they feel soft and smooth because of the glossy finish.^_^

Yeah Ive read that they really were scary Ive read some of the original texts. They were quite long so I settled on the Rapunzel story. Its was only a page and really far from the fairy tale versions wooh!Ive was surprised when I read about it too. I know that nursery rhymes are originally not that sweet(ive read the gruesome version of Jack and Jill) but I didnt know that fairy tales were too. Ive always thought that they were always like that. Sugar, spice and everything nice but boy was I wrong!LOL Ive never heard of the guy you said, was it Richard or David Wiesner?I kinda forgot the first name sorry, Ill look him up, I havent seen a book with no words so that must really be interesting. Thanks!^_^

I have searched the ladybird books site and they are indeed nice books, especially the vintage prints they have! It's amazing. I love vintage drawings, reminds you of the past yet good memories of childhood. Did you know that the Grimms stories are originally in fact, very "grimm" or scary? Some of the stories are actually dark and intended to scare kids. But later on they were adapted to fit in a child's imagination. I like the Grimm's Fairy Tales, especially Beauty and the Beast and Ugly Duckling (did they actually wrote that, I can't remember) Oh, I remember, I have another book illustrator that I really like: he's David Wiesner. Have you read or actually "see" his wordless books? Amazing. I wonder how he come up with his ideas like that. Someday I'd really like to create a book like those.

Now a days i'm buying maisy's book collection. My girls are beginners. It helps to learn small words and to read a full sentence. That way I am happy with maisy

Oh maisy books are cool also, they're perfect for beginners. It's just that I find it too commercialized, if you get what I mean...
