With summer fast approaching, ppl need to be extra careful of the heat especially those in the Southern states. A few tips to help you along are drink plenty of water, stay in the shade as much as possible, wear light airy clothing, avoid alcohol and caffeine, also banana’s help replace electrolyte’s. If you get too hot, find a cool place to lie down and perhaps put a cool cloth on your head. Avoid doing strenuous things (mowing, gardening, ect) in the middle of the day at the hottest time. Remember when you’re in a pool that you may burn without realizing it. I tend to stay indoors as much as possible b/c I get heat strokes really easily. When I do go outside I try to follow the ideas above as much as possible. What are your tips for keeping cool in the summertime? How do you handle the heat? Do you have a mild summer or a hard one in terms of heat? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Uggghhh! It's only 72 here in Minnesota. Very overcast but the humidity is up there making it hard for me to be outdoors with my asthma. Inside the humidity is decent so this is where I sit. Within a couple weeks I'll be setting the a/c in the window I am sure. Keep that heat down there please? Now I am missing my snow. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I stay inside and run the central air conditioning. I plan on staying just as cool as I possibly can. I drink my pot of coffee in the morning and cold water the rest of the day... and just lounge around doing whatever. I make it a rule to never do strenuous things, in fact it is almost like a religion and a way of life for me. Why should I wear myself out when someone else can do the heavy lifting?

We usually get two or three really hot stretches of a few days.. and when that happens I try to get any chores done early in the morning or later in the evening.. All your advice is very good! I was at a planned event one year among our friends, right in the middle of one of these hot spells and one of the friends brought some spray bottles and we all took turns using the bottles and even spraying one another.. there was just enough of a breeze to keep us comfortable all day! Since then I've seen spray bottles with a little fan attached.. It really does help.. the cool water with a breeze.. If we don't have a pool, maybe a little sprinkle of hose water a couple of times can help!

I pretty much do the same things you do to stay cool, twoey cept I buy stock in gatorade. lol The lawn gets mowed either early in the morning when dawn breaks or late at night when dusk is just settling. Have light on my rider.

We usually have a somewhat hot summer, temps from 90-100, but this year has been pretty mild..In fact last week felt more like Sept because we were in the 70's..

And those of you in the Southern Hemisphere, remember that the winter sun is still very brutal and the advice given in this discussion should still be listened to. When it is hot here, we tend to have the air conditioning on and have frequent cool showers. To avoid being in the sun too long, my washing is hung up under the house (have an old style, flood resistant house that is open to the air underneath and you can walk under), which is also handy for wet weather and working at night as there are lights under there. We also drink heaps of water, eat ice and keep our activity to a minimum, not easy with little kids though!

I ve lived in the south and all you said are good things to do also set in front of a fan if ya can. Now I am in the desert and we reach to 123 degrees in the summer we do have a misting system in the back patio that cools it off prety good. When I was working in this heat I took a wet towel and hung it around my neck I still do that when it gets real real hot here

I think it's important for those that have really long hair to make sure they keep it off their neck, especialyl on those really really hot days. Keeping the neck cool will really help you stay cool. It helps me a lot. And if you don't have air conditioning, get a fan and a huge bowl. Put as much ice into that huge bowl as you can and set it in front of the fan. The fan will blow over the ice and blow cooler air into the room. It really helps when you don't have anything else.

Hydrate! wear loose light clothing and a hat and don't forget the sunscreen. Take frequent breaks. We are already in the 90's and it is not summer yet!

Usually only July is hot up here. Sometimes parts of June and sometimes parts of August. All your tips are good ones. Be careful around bodies of water and try not to get sunburned, too. Take care

oh twoey come July its a sizzler here in Southern California and i always try to drink my eight to ten 'glasses of water a day so as not to get dehydrated as I am a senior citizen and we do notice the heat 'more. I like the idea about bananas as they will replace electolytes. I sunburn so easily i do not go out until the sun is lower and do not go out without sunscreen either.

Use suntan oil and umbrella when I go out in the sun. When I am work ,there's air-condition in our office. But,the house I stay is hot and there's no air-condition.Every day I'll have a bath and go out the room to have a walk in the street or park. There is a free park near away our house. It's cool and busy. So,don't figure on the electrical fan ,it's not cool a little.

It gets real hot out here in California. I am nineteen blocks from the ocean, but I am not a sun bather. So I mostly stay in out of the heat myself. Last summer I became dangerously dehydrated and needed to go to the emergency room, but I didn't. Instead I ordered ten gallons of water and had them delivered. I was so dehydrated that I could not even feel the water hit my tongue. I had never been that dried out in my life. I just kept drinking and drnking. It was a very weird situation. So this year, I am going to really stock up on the water.

Off hand I can't think of any other tips than those you mentioned already. Oh yes, wear a hat if you are out in the heat is one I just thought of. We have already had heat indexes over 100 just this past week. Already heat warnings out here, I am in deep south Texas and it does get very hot here. My husband works out doors a lot so he is very aware of what to do and what not to do and still the heat will creep up on you. My son is in the air conditioning business and he is in attics a lot, so I worry about both of them during the summer time especially.

These are all good tips. Wearing loose light colored clothing helps. I check on my grandfather often. Elderly can get overlooked. Doing maitenance on ac is a good idea too. Helps to avoid a break down in the middle of the season.

My best way to deal with the heat is to stay home with air conditioner
