Reason not to be a storm chaser (my scare today)

Well there was a tornado near me, maybe 5 miles or so away. Being the type that HAS to have photos for a discussion. I traversed out once the all clear was sounded. Big mistake. After about a 10 minute drive I looked out my window at a stoplight and saw a funnel cloud spinning wildly. As I grabbed my camera it lifted off the ground and dispersed just as quickly as it formed. Just above the street light is a small white area of clouds in this photo. Just to the right is the tornado dispersing upwards. Driving back home after a short stop somewhere to get shots of a small tree down I hit 60 MPH winds and my car was litterally on 2 wheels. I parked under a bridge with about 50 other vehicles. Anyhow I will never be a storm chaser. My heart is still racing like a horse.

Wow wo wo wow! Why did you do that for! don't you think your a bit old for that. Even If we don't have tornadoes here I've seen how devastating it is. I've seen it in new, read in book and I've the seen the movie twister.
Next time Grandpa Bob tag me along.

Just how I am. I love taking photos and I love doing discussions about my daily life. Thing is when I left the skies were a dark blue like this photo taken from my front yard just before I left. Just a mild storm it seemed. But things changed quickly for the worse.

I have to apologize. This attatched photo in this response was edited by someone and it does not represent the strom or clouds I saw at all. There was no tornado in the original photo that is attatched in this discussion up top. Please ignore this photo as it is a fake and remake of my original. Sorry ferd but this stepped across the lines here in such a serious issue I had to let others know it was not my doings this photo here.

Grandpa Bob what is wrong with you.lol.
I would never go out and chase a tornado. We get a lot of tornado weather hear. But always been lucky to not have one hit us. We keep our finger crossed that it will never happen. We did get hail and rain yesterday and the sirens went off but everything turned out ok. I love summer but I sure dont like the tornado season.

The other night I was online monitoring a tornadic storm near Perry, Oklahoma because a friend who lives in Stillwater, OK who was chatting to me on MSN at the time was worried that it would moved down to Stllwater. Perry is just in the next county, so the storm was not very far away.
She was following the tornado chasers reports on the TV and I was able to get real - time radar of the storm and tornadoes on http://www.wunderground.com There where about 12 on the ground at one time or another in the vicinity of Perry.
One of the chasers got into difficulty and nearly got caught by one of the tornadoes just south of PerryHe got out of OK though it gave him a scare.

A pig farm was taken out by one of the twisters, but apparently all of the pigs survived http://www.news9.com/Global/category.asp?C=137906

Wow, I would be too scared to even think about my camera. My son called and told me that a tornado touched down in the parking lot where he lived. He said it only lasted a few seconds. He tried getting picture on his cell phone but they did not come out.
You men are all alike!
(mom mode on)
Don't do anything like this again! Do you hear me? I hope so!
(mom mode off)
Please be safe...BTW it was a scary picture, nice shot!

Wow, even with your fears you were still able to get some pictures of the furiuos tornado. I am one of those who have fears even with strong rain that is coupled with loud thurders, yikes, it makes me want to cry when I hear and experience those. It was more worst for me when was a kid. Whe it rains hard I can remember running hiding inside our room and crying hard.

Is this how you welcome a visitor to Minnesota? I listened to the storm sirens and sat and looked out my daughter's apartment window. Glad it is over now. I do not chase storms. Glad you are safe.

Talk about close calls-I'm glad we don't get that kind of weather here in Upstate SC USA
Some may say you were very brave trying to get that "money" shot but on the other hand I think you're right not to risk your life for those pics

I am so mad with you right now I could spit AGB - and I loathe spitting! How could you put yourself in that kind of danger? Apart from how devastated your lovely family would have been if anything had happened to you what would we have done? Oh and we would have felt guilty as you were out getting photos for us! Please, please don't ever take chances like that again or I will really have to think of an appropriate punishment! I am glad that you are safe but I have to say I think that is more thanks to Good Luck than Good Judgement! xxx

Really glad to hear that you and your family are safe. The picture you took was pretty under the circumstances just glad there was not a tornado chasing you in it. There is no way I could or would ever be a storm chaser. We seldom have tornado's here, maybe a funnel cloud but we are on the coast where hurricanes are the thing but thankful we haven't had one of those in many years.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Wow, that must be exciting and scary at the same time. I am glad you are safe my friend! I have watched a show about storm chasers before and I really find storm chasing so exciting and scary somehow. I used to imagine being with these storm chasers but of course, I won't leave their side for fear that I might be chased by the storm instead.
Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting!

I could yell at you, and tell you that you were foolish. I would probably do the same thing. I can't resist looking at wild weather. I'm glad you're ok, and got enough of a mess in your civies to make you not do that again. The pic is great!

Aww--you mean you don't want to audition for Twister 2? LOL...I loved that movie, Twister by the way, and I don't know how real storm chasers have the guts to do that...I mean tornadoes can hit in a flash without any warning. Years and years ago, when my mother and I were in Florida we were hit by a "min" hurricane....uh, guess who was out in it trying to photograph the effects? Uh, yup me. all I can say, is, if that was a mini hurricane sure wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near a major one

I don't think I could be a storm chaser either, I think I would be headed the opposite direction. I'm sure that was a bit scary trying to get a photo of a tornado. I will comment on the picture as soon as I hit submit of this discussion since I can't see the pic just yet.

I was hit with like 60 MPH winds from the tail end of a tornado and it lifted my car half off the road. And those people drive after them. No thank you very much. I like my car with all 4 wheels on the ground and I like my life too much.

Hi Grandpa Bob it all looks so exciting in the movies
but in reality its a whole other thing. scary, frightening,
knee shaking, not at all fun. I grew up in tornado
alley and we all had storm cellars. we watched for the
tornados then as we did not have all the latest technology
and when it looked like we were in the path we went
into the storm cellar.I was so lucky as one never hit
our own farm but on the farms on either side of us.
Houses reduced to splinters and odd stuff flung all over
even a baby buggy up in a tree. I saw straws blown into
telephone poles and garages torn off one foundation and set
down onto a whole different foundation. ONe house would'be
totally demolished and another one not touched.

It was fun. A very scary fun adventure but still fun sort of. I won't be trying that anytime soon again though. That I can promise. I've seen a few really deadly ones in my time. We had a big one here that took out my next door neighbors 40 foot pine tree and did nothing but break a few branches on my trees.
