The Sweetest Thing...

Hi kiddies, What's the sweetest, most heart-warming piece of music that you know? Something that you recognize at the first couple of bars, that instantly turns rain into sunshine for you? I have just two that I can think of - they take me to a happy place no matter how rotten life is trying to be - 1. "Sugar" by The Archies. 2. "Honey Honey" by ABBA. There's one other that, for me, is a close third to those two - 3. "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis the King. Anyway, what's the sugar that sweetens YOUR world?

Trivium has a song called Seize the Day that reminds me of my youngest son and that sweetens my day while it brings a few tears to my eyes. The solo is also hard for me to master, which also sweetens my day!! I also love "Dogs" by Pink Floyd which reminds me of the good times when my ex-husband took me to two PF concerts but also reminds me of his attitude towards life. Most songs I hear remind me of things but it's bittersweet, sorrow mixed with happiness. I'm very fortunate in that my life has had a lot of mixed blessings so that I know all sides of so many situations. There's no shortage of variety in my my emotions!

Hi dragon54u, If Pink Floyd's "Dogs" is "Dogs of War", I actually find that music rather disturbing. Not my cup of tea, if that's what it is (and I'd hate to get in your ex-hubby's way!). I'm sad to know that your happiness is tinged with sadness - too much of that in this world, for my liking anyway. But isn't it wonderful how this rhythmic patterned sound can open a conduit to such a world of experience? Like a key to decouple our self from the banality of the material world... And thanks for mentioning Pink Floyd - I don't like too much of their work, but "Learning to Fly" enraptures me every time I hear it.

Hi again, I'll see if I can find that "Dogs" piece and have a listen to it. It sounds like Pink Floyd is another of those bands composed of such remarkably talented musicians that they could each carve out successful musical careers in their own right. Reminds me a little of Boz Scaggs and Steve Miller, who started out together in a band while still in high school. But Pink Floyd was rather innovative and unconventional, too.

I LOVE Boz Skaggs, his voice is so seductive! I wish the guitar work was his. Gilmour sang and played lead on most PF albums, thus he won rights to the PF name. The album is Animals, a rather tarnished view of life and society but which rings so true, back then and especially now. You'll probably enjoy it. Look up the lyrics and download the free music. The music itself is well worth the cost of the cd (but you can get it, legitimately, for free many places) as all their music was geared towards the lyrics, swelling and receding in all the right places with Gilmour's guitar expressing the innermost passions of everyday life and all its joys and frustrations. Happy listening!

Hi MsTickle, I don't know why, but I have no trouble at all imagining you doing a rendition of Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock'n'Roll" - especially the bit where you slide sideways into the kitchen in your underwear (!)... One of my funniest memories was when Alf the Alien did a rendition of that song, too... in fact, when I hear that song, it reminds me of Alf. Funny how happy memories can be linked to a simple tune like that...

Oh dear dodoguy, that's a picture that made me giggle but it's not me. I'm more of a Carole King and Mamas and Papas kinda girl. "Dancing in the Street" makes me enthusiastic about struttin' me stuff, but melodies are more apt to bring sad memories to the fore. Another song when I was at boarding school that made me happy was "We gotta get outta this place" Can't remember who did that. Austin Tayshus' rendition of Australiana always gives me a giggle. Bring back ALF!!! He was a darling...why do they show endless repeats of M.A.S.H. instead of a more superior show such as ALF??

Well, the first one that comes to my mind, although there are MANY, is Black Mountain Rag. It puts a smile on my face no matter what mood I'm in! I have included a couple of video links, one is a solo performance, but you can really appreciate the finger work and bowing, the second one somebodies grampa is playing the guitar and it looks like sis on bass, so it's a sort of 'fuller' version... I love it both ways. Tell me how you like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1HJB70ilUg YouTube - Black Mountain Rag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg8pWQMwU28 YouTube - Black Mountain Rag Hehehe... have fun!

Hi zigzagbuddha, Well I guess you have to have an appreciation for country sound to appreciate hat piece of music. The second rendition certainly seems to have more "depth" than the first (solo) performance. I imagine it would be the sort of music played at a big family or community gathering - so I'm guessing you must have some good memories there... Thanks for sharing those links - there's no way I would have found it by myself!

Well the sweetest song that I always recognize is called Lonely Pup (in a Christmas Shop) by Adam Faith. Old song but so cute! I don't really listen it to cheer up or anything but when it is Christmas time I love to play it. Just so cute they lyrics, beat and everything else about the song.

Hi roxanne271, I honestly don't know that song at all... But I know exactly what you mean about recognizing it - I'm the same with "Sugar", I only have to hear the first couple of notes to recognize it. And they do have some powerfully endearing quality about them that warms the cockles of one's heart every time they play. Now you've tweaked my curiosity, I'll probably be looking around for ages to find this Lonely Pup song...

I really like the song 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' by the Temptations. I immediately get giddy like a little kid or something when I hear that used in a movie or commercial. Although, I'm not sure when the song originally came out, but I also like When In Rome's The Promise because it embodies the eighties so much. I guess Vanessa Carlton's Ordinary Day is cool, I'm trying to learn that on my keyboard. Thomas Newman is one of my favorite composers and I like his song 'That Next Place' from Meet Joe Black. I think it's brilliant.

Isn't it strange how when a song resonates with you, it seems to absorb your mind and you merge with it. As though it's like a time-stamp on a period of one's life or something - a ticket to enjoy the same experience or situation, even if only imagined... You must have a wow of a time with your keyboard... I'd love to know how so many musicians breathe form and substance into their creations - what a marvelous talent to have.

Absolutely. Music is the air I breathe. And I do try to spend a lot of time on my keyboard. I'm getting better, but I still have to learn the basic chords and stuff. I can read music, but I need to go at a slow pace right now.

Bleh, I cannot c&p yet which really bothers me. I was going to post the lyrics for a song by Rascal Flatts called 'My Wish'. Rascal Flatts is a contemporary country/pop band that I first heard from in 2003. I bought the first cd titled 'Melt' when I met my husband. Anyway, fast forward to now =) We have a 4 year old daughter and when 'My Wish' was released it sounded like it was made for her. ...my wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to ...your dreams stay big, your worries stay small, you never need to carry more than you can hold ...and while you're out there getting where you're getting to ...I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too, ...yeah this.. is my wish I also just found out that one of the members of the band wrote this song for his daughter, so I am not far off in seeing the potential.

Hi mommyboo, I can understand how your little girl can stir up sentiments for a particular song. There's a couple of songs I know which are of a similar character to the one you mentioned. Eg, "A Little ray of Sunshine", sung by Glen Shorrock in the band Axiom before he became the lead singer for The Little River Band all those years ago. That song was inspired by Don Mudie's (one of Axiom's members) first child. Incidentally, one of my all-time favorite songs, "Arkansas Grass", was written and performed by Axiom. It's a protest against war. Makes me think of Hillary Clinton too - damn she's hot!!! Another really warm song about a fellow's child is "My Little Angel" by William Shakespeare (he gets around...). I'm not sure who or what inspired the song, but it's a nice one anyway. The song's lyrics are here - [ http://www.platinum-celebs.com/song/674782/my-little-angel/ ]. Thanks for sharing your thoughts - it brought some memories back for me...

Wow DodoGuy you are really dating yourself here! The theme to Love Story always gives the day a little more light as does Down by the Lay river by the Osmond's and Tina Turners Proud Mary. Now that one really gets my blood pumping.

Hi Angelwhispers, I think dates don't have so much to do with things as the prevailing culture - there's been a deterioration in music for the past few decades, with only occasional gems cropping up here and there IMO. I can't say I know any of those songs you mention there, but I do know (of) Tina Turner - quite a bit too energetic for me ;) But Tina Turner brings Gloria Gaynor to mind, with that song "I never can say goodbye" - another timeless ballad from the disco era. Used to great effect in one episode of Alley McBeal. And Gloria Gaynor reminds me of Nicolette Larson's "A Lotta Love". And that reminds me of Kimba the White Lion. What a wonderful world we used to have.

My favorite soft, warm-hearted, sappy love song, would have to be by Journey. I can't remember the name of it, but Steve Perry sings about the circus. Do you know the one I'm talking about? It's excellent, but I don't have the album, or should I say cd, so I don't remember the name. It's on the tip of my tongue, I wished I could think of it.

Hi kykidd, That wouldn't be a song called "Faithfully" or something similar? Starts off with "Highway run into the midnight sun, wheels go round & round..." (can't remember the rest)...

I love "Vincent" by Don McLean about Van Gogh. It's a quite sad, but it's so beautiful! The lyrics really paint a picture. I also love "Melody Day" by Caribou and "There She Goes" by The La's and "Guinevere" and "The Lee Shore" and "Woodenships" all by Crosby, Stills, and Nash never fail to put a smile on my face. CSN have written some of the most beautiful music ever, in my humble opinion. And "James" by Josh Rouse is pretty infectious.

Hi Iconoclast1, Well I can honestly say I have no idea about any of these songs that you mention... Sadly, showing my heathen upbringing, not to mention my ignorance! I do like your turn of phrase about "painting a picture" of Van Gogh, though. I know some of the artists (and they're good ones IMO) but just can't pin the songs. Anyway, my view isn't relevant - thanks for sharing your favorites here! Doubtless some other (better educated) myLotters can appreciate your sentiments.

Hi crazeMD, "My Girl" by The Temptations - what a classic! That song really epitomizes a golden era in American culture - probably near the peak, I suspect.. I'm not familiar with "Every Move I Make" or with "Sunshine", but the name reminds me of "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & the Waves - now there's a song that just radiates warmth, energy and joy! Thanks for the memory.

I love Roxy Music. And IMO "More then This" is one of their best. They're not at the top of my favorite list of all time, but they're up there with the best of them. I do like your "floating into fantasy land" thought, because a piece of music really does take you to a different place when it harmonizes with you.

Hi baumunkgirl, "Beautiful Soul" sounds like a pleasant piece of music, but it doesn't do much for me. I guess there must be other dimensions to it that I'm not appreciating - I know there's quite a few songs that I probably wouldn't have made as big an impression on me without having seen the music video, for example. But at the same time, there's also a bunch of songs for which the music video was either irrelevant or actually detracted from my otherwise favorable first impressions. So anyway, I assume something about that song resonates with you - and good for you! I hope you keep hearing it whenever you need a lift.
