People spitting on footpaths

For some reason, whenever I see someone spit on a footpath it makes me both angry and sick. First of all, it's disgusting. Especially if it's a big loogy they've hocked up. Secondly, do they n ot have respect for the people who are going to be walking along the footpath after them? I wouldn't like to stand in someone's goober. I might then go into my house with my shoes on and spread goober all over my carpet. Gross. I understand that sometimes you have to spit if you've got a bit of phlegm to get rid off but can't these people spit behind a tree or somewhere inconspicuous?
A little while ago I was in the passenger seat driving along with my friend and I saw someone spit. I shook my finger at them to let them know I wasn't happy. It was quite funny. I hope that person thinks twice the next time they go to spit.
Does spitting in public bother you?

Personally on your first point I agree it is kind of rude to spit on a footpath, because of all the people who walk on a footpath, but at the same time in other situations its public, its not up to you to decide who can spit where, unless they spit on you,or your family or they spit on your property, and you were riding with your friend and you saw someone spit so you decided to wag your finger at them, did they spit at your friends car?Did they spit at you? What do you really think wagging your finger is gonna do?Besides did you ever consider that the person could have a problem with their throat, that causes them to have to spit, cause they have extra saliva in their mouth, wouldnt you spit it out?Besides the person could have seen you wagging your finger and thought you were an idiot.I myself dip, so I spit alot, but I try to always have a bottle with me to spit in. I am not trying to start an argument with you, I am only expressing my viewpoints.

Hi coffeeshot,
I agree this habit is quite offensive, as well as being unhygienic and inconsiderate to other people.
It's almost a good enough reason to take up steroids, in order to get bulked up enough to grab any offender by the scruff of their neck and rub their noses in it (and I'd do the same to any dog owner who allows his pet to do poo-poos in public places without immediately cleaning the mess up).
An alternative would be to get a pet llama to take for walkies, and make sure the llama does a good hookey into the face of anyone who does likewise first.

Clearly, that is the correct thing to do for the wellbeing of the community.

I also hate it when people spit on the footpath... that is so unethical and inconsiderate of them... they can have a contagious disease... and this might spread and cause an epidemic (that can happen)... this is one reason why the shoes or sandals we wear outside cannot be used inside the house... since my baby has this habit of lying on the floor as part of her playtime...
There should be a law against spitting in public places...

I wonder if there are laws in place against spitting anywhere in the world?

This is a very gross habit people have and I find it to be very disgusting. If someone needs to spit they should have consideration of others as to where they put their spit. I'm sure they wouldn't want to step in someone elses spit!

It is utterly disgusting and uncouth behavior! You know how they put those signs that says dogs should not foul, they should put up signs for this behavior.
Apart from having to worry about stepping in someone's spit, there's the diseases they are spreading! There's those that really cough it up and spit or do not bother to carry tissues and just blow it out their nose. Very unhygienic and Very Annoying to say the least...

I think you've said it all! They have no respect for others and, apparently, no respect for themselves, either. I wonder how they would feel if someone did the same right in front of them so he would have to walk around it.

It bothers me a lot....and I thought it was a problem we had only in Asian countries! We have not only people spitting on the footpaths....we have people who spit all over after chewing paan....and people spitting gum....using the footpath as a toilet!!! It's really gross...and I'm glad we remove our footwear before we enter the house.

Oh, yes. I hate that!
I used to work in a prison and the men spat or blew their nose on the sidewalks. It made me nauseous. It is almost as bad as someone urinating in public!
Well, maybe not quite. But it is obnoxious.
I think it is mostly a man thing. They think it is macho. I see little boys doing it to feel grown up. Weird. A childish disregard for social graces becomes a mark of masculine maturity? Hmmmm.

That is gross...I can understand when a person has to spit but they do not have to spit where others has to walk..If i stepped on a big looger I would probably throw up right there. Its two things that make me deathy sick is a big ole looger or to find a hair in my food....

Ugh! Spitting is the one thing I absolutely cannot handle! It is so gross! I am trying to break my 9 year old son of it right now. He spits all the time and it is so nasty. His dad lets him as long as he does it in the grass. I don't want him to do it at all!
Spit really makes me ill. I literally get sick to my stomach just thinking about it. The dentist with that straw thing that sucks up the spit...yeah I practically have to have an out of body experience to sit through that. Yuck.

It is disgusting, I see it all the time around where I live, people hawking from the back of their throat and lobbing it on the pavement. Then I have to make sure that my kids do not step in it, dirty ....... cannot put what I really want too.

I totally agree. I think its disgusting seeing people spit everywhere, like on the footpath. I have to walk there too :S it's unhygenic. And some people seem to act like its cool or something, espcially guys. I think if people really want to get rid of some phelgm they should aim it at the grass or something instead of the footpath. And if they have a lot of phelgm, i mean they should really do something about it besides spitting, maybe they are eating the wrong foods or something!

Yes, it bothers me! Can't they aim for the grass or dirt? It ranks right up there with spitting gum on the side walk or parking lot. I used to get really mad at my ex for spitting gum or loogies out the window. My daughters agree with me. It is one of those nasty habits that some nasty people have.

This is actually really really common on the sidewalks downtown here. I've actually almost been spit upon by someone who just wasn't paying any attention to where he was about to spit. Luckily, it didn't hit me!
But yeah, it's very gross, and bothers me a lot.
