Do you think the degree is really the most important?

I went to university and got a really good degree in English Literature and Cultural Criticism, but when I graduated and started applying for jobs, I couldn't seem to get anywhere. Everywhere said the same thing - that I didn't have enough experience. How can you get experience if no one will hire you?! I often felt like my degree was worthless and I would have been better off just working and getting experience. It's such a shame, I loved doing my degree and I felt like I learned so much.

Hi lishiwei, Having a degree is very important to any student(youngster) where ever he is residing in the world. Ofcourse, skill( general knowledge & apptitude) is also very essential. But having a degree is most important than skill because only with our degree we can approach to a job and skill comes to get the same. so, it is very essential that every one should have a degree. I don't think degree is really important. Ability is more important. But there is a reality that in my country degree is a stepping-stone to success. When U go for a job, degree and background is the first step that most employers can select a short-list interviewees, then ur ability.

the degree is only for creating a opportunity for an interview, it is like a key. while the most important is the skill. so with the skill you will make a surprise in the house after you enter into it. many times, there are still a lot of skillful people can't get their dreaming job for lack of degree. it is a pity.

Well why do you think most of big companies are looking at your resume and ask you from what school you came from and what you have finished? I think it is a big part to every person having a degree. It is something that makes you proud that you have learned something, not only because you needed it to find a job. It is something you treasure that the only thing people can't take away from you. And like you said, skills is also important. But without the knowledge, how can a person work on his skills, things won't be a balance. You have to have both. =)

I still think a degree is important, especially when people want to apply for a job. There are some companies that require applicants to have at least a 3-year diploma degree. But skill might even play a more important role. The company I work for didn't hire me to do statistical measurement, but to design their marketing kits. :P

I would say that degree is a necessity today to give you a good beginning and then once you get an opportunity to do a job based on your degree there are certain expectations from you and here you need to prove yourself. This is from where you would actually be creating a carrer for youself. If you fail in this part then the degree is of no worth. You need to prove that with the studies you have completed you are giving something fresh and new to the organisation which would help the company grow to new heights.

yes for few things its important for getting a job but to grow or to get promotions we require skill. if you have just bookish knowledge - its just going to help to get a job and to get the basic salary but to get more from the job or life we requir skill and talent. enjoy :)

The degree isn't the most important, but it is more imporsible to get a good job without the degree. It's right that you can't find a good job very easyly with the degree. It's right that you wouldn't have the high skill with the degree. But how can you get a good job, and who know you have the skill, if you have not the degree? The degree is not everything, but no degree is nothing to us!

i think the experience and the job is mostly important , the degree is just a signed piece of paper , students can get it , and not get that job that they studied 4 years for , or they can still get it , and not have enough experience ..one of many things that needs to be told in school id say

Well,I can't agree more.I think the most important thing is your real shill and ability.However,sometimes the degree is the most and the only standard the company always need.It happens,you know.It is a social phenomenon,and I hope that it can change oneday.

No, I don't think so. I know a lot of successful people who are college drop outs and unsuccessful people who are college graduates. Your will to succeed is more important than a college degree. :0)

ya in this modern world, having adegree is very important as its very difficult to find a job and you need to have better qualifications than others to be able to move forward. ya thats true along with your degree you need to have skills also which will enhance your performance and make you better than others.

ur frnd is rite....wid a degree u can just get a job but 2 stick 2 it(d job) n 2 do well der u really need some skills oderwise u will b kicked out of d organization d very oder day of ur joining

having a college diploma and post-master degree or something only give you the edge in looking for a good or high paying job but it's not everything for a person to succeed. i believe it's still what's in our mind and our ability to contemplate and reach our goals. a person with diverse abilities and exceptional skills are the most that succeed not the person who has a degree yet knows nothing deeper than the books.

It is true that degree has not so much value nowdays but still it is an important thing in the life of a person. I think nowdays skilled knowledge is more important than degree as it helps u to get job and money.

I think both the degree and the general knowlege are very important for us. The degree and skills are very essential to help to offer us a good job!

I agree with you in some aspects.but as we all know,in a sense,the degree represents your ability because others can make it but you can't.
