Trash Into Cash?

Cartridge Worth .60 -
This is the cartridge that my printer uses. One company pays .60 for this one if I recycle it.

Has anyone ever recycled printer ink cartridges and got paid for it? I've started reading about this online tonight and I'm definitely interested in it, and wondering if anyone else out there has done this, and how it worked out for them. If you've done it, let's hear about it. I'd like to know what companies are reputable (I've got one in mind already), the best way to collect the cartridges, how to contact local businesses to get them to save their cartridges, etc. I think this sounds like a great opportunity to not only help keep the used cartridges out of the landfills, but also to make a few bucks in the process.

I used to send our cartridges from work to freerecycling.com. We opted to donate the money, but they had an option to pay individuals also. (I donated it because I didn't want it to be seen as a conflict of interest at work, but I didn't want the cartridges going into a landfill.) Not sure if this helps you much since I didn't personally get the check, but the company was easy to work with.

Yessssss! Thank you, thank you, my friend. That's one of the companies that I had earmarked and was hoping to get some information on. They did pay up though, right?

I think most larger companies may already recycle them, but I was thinking about even asking if I could put a box up in the smaller Mom & Pop type stores in the area, or other small businesses. I'd even consider posting on freecycle for people to save them and I'd pick them up, as long as it wasn't out of my way.

I just recently found out about the companies that do it for charities. The one I joined specificaly states that you have to be a charity, you can't do it for profit - from them. I guess there would be ones that you could make money from. I found the site I joined because I'm raising money for a charity walk. The company sends me all the postage labels and stuff, all I have to do is get the toners and send them in. What's great with doing this for a charity is that people are more likely to give them to you rather then send them in themselves if it's for charity. I don't know that people would give them to me as much if it was just for me. I've asked a couple other offices in my building and a coupld of our clients to save them for me. They were more than happy to because most of them just send them back for recycling (and get nothing). A few places you might try are title companies, CPA, lawyer and doctor offices. You might want to stay clear of the smaller offices and such because they are taking them to the office supply store for the $3 credit. But the mid-sized usually don't want to hassle with the Good Luck!

Yes, I know a lot are doing it for fundraising, but I found two that will do it for the individual as well, so I'm looking into both of them further. I'm still brainstorming how I might go about getting any to give this a try.

So far I've found a few companies that do it and sound reputable, but I have no way of knowing for sure which would be best. That's why I was hoping to find someone here that has been doing it and could provide a testimonial. If I give it a go, I guess that 'someone' will be me!

Hi Ldyjarhead I heard about that too on the MoneysavingExpert.com forum - apparantly, you could sell your used ink cartiridges on eBay. So I tried it out - put 2 used catridges up on eBay and they did sell - not for a huge amount - but they did sell. I saw it as something for nothing, plus the recycling element. So, yes, it does happen; however, I'm not sure how prolific it still is. I tried to sell another lot a couple of months ago, but no buyers. I read on a diff forum (Peazy Shop) that a guy sold his for about £20. So I guess it still works, but not always. Hope my rambling helps! :-) take care...

Wow, with eBay fees and other things changing so much lately, I don't think I'd even consider that option. I'd much rather go with a 'sure thing' that some of these companies seem to be. They even pay for shipping, send you the shipping label and all. The only thing you have to do is find the used cartridges, put them in a box, slap the label on and set it out for pickup.

You can recycle cartridges with some online sites. Staples take back cartridges for about $3.

I understand that, and I said in my original discussion that I was researching it online already. I'm hoping to get testimonials from others that have actually done it. I looked at Staples and they pay $3 for each cartridge, but only to your school, not to individuals.

I just looked it up and found several places that say Office Max doesn't do it any longer. The things I'm finding are companies that you mail them too and they send you a check or PayPal.

I have not heard about it in Canada or at least in Manitoba. We are suppose to be into doing things out of benevolence, and into donations. That is why there are few second hand trade in stores, except in some older districts. If there were a place where I could give my recycled cartidges here in Winnipeg and get paid for it, I would be glad to hear about it. .

I'm looking at websites that say you can mail them and get paid for it. I don't know whether any of them are available in Canada, though.

I never heard that one can get cash for recycling ink cartridges. I get the HP inks for my printer and each time I do, they have an envelope to mail the used cartridge back to them to recycle...gee, think I've been gipped if I had known I could get cash for them

I think you have to have a number of them to send back in order to get paid for them, but yes, I suppose if you use your printer quite a bit, you could go through them often enough to maybe make a buck or two. From what I'm finding in my search, some of the local office supply stores will take them and give you a discount on your purchase. I want to make money, though, like maybe solicit local businesses to save their cartridges for me, that sort of thing.

There are already lots of stores here that offers ink refill. So the cartridges are never put into trash. But there are still companies that buy the empty cartridges. They refill the cartridge and sell them again, for lower prices.

Thank you. I'm don't know if there would be many similarities between how it would work in each of our countries, but I'm hoping to get any input that I can.
