What do you do, when your computer starts acting funny and won't work right?

Today, I noticed that my computer is not working at all. It won't open links in a new tab and Windows is not working right. I'm going to reboot my computer to see if I can get things working right. And, if that doesn't work, I'm going to start uninstalling programs. Yesterday, I installed VEOH TV and things have not felt right on my computer since then.
I've used the program once, but it ended up opening up five seperate windows when I clicked on it. And, the picture was not very clear. My screen keeps freezing up while I'm working on MyLot and Blogger, so I know it's not the website. It has to be my computer or a program that was installed recently. What would you do if your computer started acting funny or became unresponsive?

Be very careful before you reformat the hard drive. Make sure you have CD's for the FULL version of Windows (not an upgrade disc) and your motherboard. Without the motherboard CD you will have difficulty getting the drivers for the on-board sound, USB, video, ethernet port, etc. etc.
Most PC's come today with Windows backup on a partition on the hard drive which you will of course wipe if you are not careful.
Much better just to wind you XP back to a previous restore date.

I have the same problem since I installed iTunes, my browser keeps freezing, and sometimes it doesn't un-freeze until I actually reboot my computer. In such cases firefox is really helpful because it memorizes the pages that I had opened in my browser. Anyway, I tried to uninstall the program but it didn't help, so now I guess I have some virus spyware od adware or something like that and I test my computer against them but although avg is updated it doesnt find anything. I don't know what's wrong so if this continues I will have to format my computer and I really hate that because then I have to wast at least 3-4 hours installing all the necessary programs and adding all my favourite sites to my bookmarks.
So my advice to you would be to test your computer against viruses.

It's always best to have a back-up of all your important files, preferably in a DVD or CD or in any removable storage. Then when I noticed that my computer starts acting funny and won't work right, I would reformat my disk and set-it up again. You can also check first the hardware, like memory. Memory card usually is the cause of that freezing and hangging up and lagging. Either clean the contacts or replace them if necessary. Those were the things I would do.

I too faced that same problem. But I couldn't find out what is the problem. I reinstalled the OS then only it has been fixed. so my advice is it is better to backup important files at a regular intervals. So, you can avoid lot of loss. Thanks

I would run scans for things like spyware, then I would do like you and uninstall things or go back to a restore point. I have had what you describe happen to me with new downloads.

The first thing I would do is get out Norton's full Computer and Removal Scan. If it's something small like lagg, just Ctrl+Alt+Del. The Task manager can stop lagg by manually closing Programs.

I would try using your system restore to fix the problem. It should have automatically created a restore point when you installed the new program yesterday. It sounds like that is probably what is causing your trouble. Restore your system to the point prior to installing the new program. If that does not work, try running your virus scan program, defraging your hard drive, and performing a disk clean up. If that does not work, you might check Window's website and see if there are any patches that you do not already have in your system. Good luck!

Hello beautyqueen26,
I am not good at computer and if anything happens to it, I will just leave it to my husband to figure out what actually need to be done. So many times, whenever it keeps freezing up or I feel something just not right and I try to repair or do something, it will get from bad to worse. So, just leave it to the pro *smiles*

Well...If its running and i could I'd try uninstalling the software I had installed most recently when the issue developed. Otherwise I'd be trying to update my AVG, Spybot and adaware then booting into safemode and scanning for viruses and adware/spyware. The other thing i would try is rebooting it...as well as possibly if i actually had it turned on...system restore.
If it was totally unresponsive I'd be restarting it and going straight to safemode. There If it wasnt freezing up I'd be uninstalling things/checking for viruses/and also checking things out using SFC or even msconfig.

Bring up the Task Manager and end all the tasks that are not required. ALthough I have sworn to spend most of my time on the Mac, which doesn't hang up, I sometimes use the PC to play games and do stuff that I do not want to do on the MacBook. I just bring up the task manage and end all the processes which are not required. You should know that any new software will install an icon in the task bar and that runs in the back ground continuously. I end them all and the system starts to run a bit faster than before. Try that. Try to end some processes and see how your PC responds.

High probability that you infected by virus or trojan.
If this happen,
you have to clean up the virus/trojan or reformat your computer...

I usually restart my computer. If that doesn't work, I turn my computer off, unplug all power cables, and wait for 15 minutes or so. Then I open my computer again, and see if it works. Usually this fixes things...
But sometimes, this doesn't work, so I do several things to fix my computer.
First, I run my computer on Safe Mode with Networking, scan the computer with my AntiVirus (I am using AVG, by the way), Disk Cleanup, and Disk Defragmenter. This takes up less memory (than starting it on Normal Mode) and it also fixes whatever problems it might've encountered.
If that method doesn't work, I run my computer on Safe Mode (still) and run System Restore (I usually save system settings every month, so that in case my computer crashes or anything happens, I can restore my previous working settings).
And if that one still doesn't work, there's no other option left but to reinstall the OS.
In your case, I think that you've got a virus from installing downloaded programs... Method 2 (Run Safe Mode, Run Antivirus) might solve the problem. :)
Hope that helps. :)

well, i'm not actually a technology person and i don't know much about computer... so when i have a problem with my computer, my hubby is usually the one who helps me to fix it... i just tell him and he will do something with it... usually he will defrag or format it and it usually works... take care and have a nice day...

Usually I try a rebort as the first option. If I've recently installed a new program which is not a standard well established reputable program I would most probably uninstall it. I also have Norton GoBack on my PC so I can use that to go back to the system setup for a certain date. I don't know what VEOH TV is but a lot of free (or even paid for) applications like that have stuff in the small print that says it will install adware or other annoying stuff when you install the software and this is what could be causing the problem. If I were you I would get rid of that program. Good luck hun :)

Seems like your computer is infected with a virus.
Before start reformatting your HD try doing a system restore first. Save all your important documents.
If all else fails then prepare all your Windows CD/Hardware Drivers/ Software CDs, etc.
If my computer starts acting up then I usually end up awake all night trying to fix it. I can't sleep knowing my computer is not working as it should lolz

I would check for viruses and spyware first by using programs like avg antivirus, adaware and spybot search and destroy. If those don't find anything you could try doing a system restore to a date when it was working properly.
