What kind of Frugal Vacation are you planning for the summer?

Summer vacation for the kiddies is right around the corner. Hubby and I are in the planning stages for the types of trips we'll take and approximately how much it'll cost. We've decided we're taking the children on four trips to nearby theme parks, unlimited visits to the local zoos (we bought the membership), and take them swimming at the beach which is walking distance from our house. All in all, it looks like a 'staycation' for 2008. For those who've never heard of staycation-- it's frugalese for 'stay at home vacation' courtesy of rising financial costs for gas, food, and general living expenses.
What kind of Vacation are you planning? Will you spend lavishly for a much needed vacation or are you going to go the frugal route and keep your family stateside until this gas war settles?

Talking about vacations, im on vacation everyday. Im from Maldives and here it summer all year through except for a few weeks of heavy rainfalls. If i walk 50 meters to west its clear white sand beaches and blue sparkling waters. coral reefs with a huge variety of living things. in my life i never planned a vacation. when ever im free i go with my family on picnic to the beach side and take a dip. maldives is a good place for all of you to visit. but i think it can be a bit costly.

well, i think i have to agree with you... with the price of gas rising that much, we can't really afford to have a vacation... we have to put priorities first... food, bills and other daily expenses... the last thing that i can think of now is vacation... we just go window shopping to a nearby shopping centre once a week... that's all... enjoy your summer vacation with the kids... take care and have a nice day...

We already went on our vacation, courtesy of the Air Force. My husband had upgrade training in Texas, and since my parents' house is less than 50 miles off one of the highways he would have to take anyway, my son and I hitched a ride and stayed with my parents while he was in training, and then he took a couple of weeks leave, too.
As far as what we are doing for the rest of the summer, we might go to the zoo a time or two, and maybe the fair. Otherwise we will probably just hang out at home. We bought my son some fun outdoor toys, so we will just use them a bunch I think!

My ex-husband and me both own our own businesses, which makes real vacations very hard to take. By real vacation, I mean more that 3 days. My children are normally "tag-a-long" kids. Friends take them along and we offer cash or they visit family in the state. Basically, I hope for a clients who need me to work on them for an event, such as a golf game somewhere great or Michael Jordan basketball camp, and if it happens--vacation. Opportunity to travel for me is limited and I sometimes get mini working vacations. The good thing about that is there are no expenses. The bad thing is, I'm alone or hanging out with a secretary that I have little in common with. The answer is there will be no lavish vacation and flexibility is the key, but it's as frugal as it gets.

Staycation! That is so funny! But I have to admit you are right! With gas prices jumping through the roof there alot of places I wanted to go but it just won't happen. As far as vacation travels are considered this year I think we will (also) take advantage of the local fair: local zoos, libraries, video stores, parks, etc. I have 4 teen and a three year old. The former with probably take off with their friends and I will take the 'tiny' to many local things.
Time to cash in the MyLot bucks for fuel! Have you ever considered selling plasma to get ahead? I have and will probably do just that to take the kids somewhere this summer!
