Have you ever seen a dandelion?

Dandelion closeup - This dandelion is growing in my yard. Dandelion is from the French word for "Tooth of the Lion."

Younger is better. You can eat them raw in salads or you can boil them like greens. A little butter, salt and pepper and you're in business. Enjoy!

All I have to do to see a dandelion is walk outside. They are all over my yard. I can't wait to kill those nasty weeds. My son loves them, though.

I don't understand if they look like flowers why they are considered a weed.

I think their "weed" status has to do with how easily and quickly they spread and how difficult they are to get rid of. If you don't try to get rid of them, they spread quickly through your yard, which makes them kind of a "pest plant"... AKA a weed.

My 3 yr. old grandson came in the house today with a big grin. He was real proud, he said gramma I have a flower for you. He gave me a beautiful perfect looking dandelion. That was better then a rose.

These things run rampant where I live. You can barely drive past yards without seeing hundreds of these little things. I think they're pretty but they do just do nothing but take over yards. I haven't seen any here yet but I'm sure some will pop up eventually.

I rather like them. the seed heads are pretty, and good as childhood time telling devices, the flowers bright and cheerful. the french name pissenlit is amusing (wet the bed), the leaves are good in salad, a bitterer version of rocket, and the roots make good coffee.

I like them too, my neighbor just came over with his weed killer and sprayed things. I am going to sneak some into a salad for hubby tomorrow.

Uumm yum I've had dandelion leaves in salad before and its tastey IMO... Galena have you ever had Dandelion tea? My daughter wants to make some and I know how but never have just because of #1 allergies LOL and #2 I'm a bit leery of what the taste might be like

if they've been sprayed, don't eat them. don't want you to poison your man there.

Yes, yes and thrice, yes! There are millions of dandelions around here... different types too. There are the shorter, large flowered ones, and the longer, small flowered ones, and at this time of year, there are lots of dandelion seeds floating on the summer breeze. I sure have seen a dandelion! Brightest Blessings, my friend. x

I think my friend who asked me to post the picture probably has them. She has not come to the discussion so far as I can tell, but people from all over the world seem to have them.

oh yes Iseen dandelions all the time. We have them all over here. People here call them weeds so we spray them with a weed killer so they die. They can take over your yard and kill your grass if you dont spray them. Some people dig them out. Digging them out takes a lot of work.

Pulling them out or digging them is good exercise for me, and I think it helps loosen up the soil.

I do have dandelions....and though most everyone sees them as a nuisance....I do not. They are the first flower most children pick to give to their mothers...how can anyone call them a weed?

I grew up on a farm in South Dakota and saw lots of dandelions. we used to eat the new fresh leaves as greens with a little vinegar on the hot dandelion greens they are good when young but get bitter when they are older and in bloom. the blooms are really' rather attractive even though they are weeds.

I certainly do have dandelions, and plenty of them! I love them. not only can you add the little leaves to salads, but my rabbits and chickens love them, and they brighten the place up with their lovely bright yellow flowers. I know many people regard them as a weed, but my garden is more a meadow than a garden, so wild flowers are welcome. Have you ever tried eating the roots? I understand that you scrub, then dry them. I think you can then grind them to make a sort of coffee substitute, a bit like you can with acorns. To be honest, it sounds like too much hassle to me. I'd rather make herbal teas instead!

I would be more likely to eat the greens, maybe even the flowers. I wondered about that root substitute for coffee.

Yes I have seen them and they are all over the place where I live. I see some of the little kids pick em and remember how I used to do that as a kid and give them to my foster mother. They look nice when they blend in w/ the green grass then they are gone when the grass is cut.

Dandelion - The English name dandelion is a corruption of the French dent de lion[3] meaning lion's tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves
I have seen dandelions throughout my life yes as they're very common in the UK. They're nice enough to look at but many people consider them to be like weeds - I've never been given a bunch of dandelions but I've had daisies picked for me or given flowers such as roses, carnations, lilies, etc. It's a shame that they're not more popular, thinking about it now, I feel quite sorry for the poor old dandelion to be considered by so many as almost a weed!

Now that is a true cultural difference, as having grown up rolling in the dandelions and loving those fluffy white fairy-like seed pods that the lawn maintenance folks so fear and dread, I never really thought that there are places in the world where dandelions are not indigenous. Maybe they are called something else! Here is a lovely shot of a child doing what children do when the pretty yellow dandelion blossom has gone to seed: http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/living-green/gfx/dandelions.jpg

GardenGerty_ Funny you should mention dandelions. I spent a number of hours yesterday with my elderly aunt as she pointed out every dandelion in her yard after I offered to help her with her lawn. I have dandelions alright, all the up into my fingernails and I'm still scraping out dirt!
