At which ring do you pick up the phone?

I remember watching my an acquaintance sit by the phone and it rang. Once, twice, and the third ring she picked up. I asked her why she let it ring so long and she said you're never supposed to pick it up right away because it shows you're sitting there waiting for it to ring!
That makes no sense. Why make someone wait just so they won't think you want someone to call? It might be important! I've had several people agree with what she said and I don't understand it at all.
Do you pick up on the first ring? I do.

I pick it up on whatever ring I can get to it at..
not usually the first ring tho because I like to see whos calling on the caller ID. i usually get it by the 2nd ring if i'm right by it but if it's not someone i know or if its a sales call. i won't answer

I've found that that's the majority of responses. Telemarketers have made us so cautious about picking up the phone! Wouldn't it be nice if we could just answer it without having to check the number? What an insane world!

I had a telemarketer call me and I wasn't in the mood and I just hung up on her and she called me back! She says angrily "Did you hang up on me?! I said "Yes" and hung up again. Can you believe the nerve of some people?

I have never heard that rule!
Who came up with that, I wonder.
I`m not the kind to rush to the phone if it rings, but in that sitation, sitting by the phone anyway- I would`ve answered on the first ring.
Especally if my 8 mo. old daughter was taking her nap!! :D

I think it must be mainly an American thing. When I was young, all the girls told me to answer on the first ring is to tell the boys that you're waiting by the phone for their call and that gives them an advantage over you. It's just pride, and silly.

I think it depends on how urgent the call is and who is calling.
If it is just friends, I think you can pick up any time you want.
There are times when it might be more appropriate not to appear too enthusiastic. Go figure.

First ring if I'm near the phone if not when I can get to it. I don't play these kind of games.

That's refreshing. I hate games, if we'd all drop the dating games and mind games it'd be a better world.

I haven't heard the word "spinster" for ages!! It's a funny word, isn't it? Makes me think of a lady in old fashioned dress spinning around in a room full of antiques and a piano!

I never pick up on the first ring simply because I'm never near the phone and I don't like answering the phone if I can get away with it. Sometimes by the time I reach the phone it's about the 3rd or 4th ring. Sometimes it's like the 10th ring before I even have a chance to get to the phone. It just depends on what I am doing.

I'm seeing a pattern here of people who aren't near a phone. That's good, in an age when everyone seems to live on the phone, talking on their cells constantly and available to the whole world 24/7!

Usually whenever I get to it. Which can change pretty drastically. Depends on if I'm holding my daughter or feeding her or cleaning, or sleeping. A lot of times I'm slow, or I miss it and the answering machine catches it. But hey, if it's important they'll leave a message or call back.

I'm glad to see a lot of people won't drop everything and rush for it! I think your daughter is much more important than a phone call and glad that you do, too.

I pick it up as soon as I can sometimes on the first ring if im right by it just for the pleasure of hearing them sound all shocked when you answer it so quickly lol!!
I have two children though so often the phone gets left ringing till the answerphone collects it on the 8th ring as if im busy with them I cant just stop

I see from others' replies that 2-4 rings is the normal time unless they're intentionally waiting to see who it is.

Our caller ID doesn't register the number of the caller until the second ring, so we always answer after the second ring. I like knowing who is calling, so I can decide if I want to interupt my dinner or nor. :-)
Our voice mail is set to pick up after the fourth ring.

The dinner hour used to be off-limits except for emergencies and no polite person would think of calling. How different things are now.

Well, that one thing to consider. But don't you think it would be more polite to inform the caller in person? How would they know they have a wrong number unless they have a readout of what they dialed? We have caller ID now but I don't think most people look at their handsets to see what they've dialed. I do wish people would be more careful dialing.

It is unique to individuals. For me, it depends my mood. I understand that picking up at the first ring mean that you are doing nothing. However if the caller is very important, i would normally pick them up asap so as not to delay anything.

I never understood why people cared whether people thought they were doing nothing, or not! It's nice to sit and do nothing every so often, it's relaxing!

I pick up when the number is displayed on my ID Box. The reason it tells me whether this will be a business call or personal call, as if its a business call, then I answer it when I'm able to spend the time giving them help.
One more reason to wait for the ID Box is to avoid telemarketers. Some of them don't want to accept no, as an answer. I did sign up for the do not call list, but keep getting calls.

There is a number on the do not call website where you can report those who call you and they'll be fined! I always tell them I'm on the list and they're going to be reported. They never call me a second time!

i ussually picked up the phone on 2nd ring because when you pick it up on a 1st ring it might have an error in connection.. then what? waste of effort thats my policy

I always unplugged the phone when my babies were sleeping, the noise would startle them so much it took me a long time to calm them down. Later, we got an extension that I could turn the ringer off.
I'll finish what I'm doing but if I'm right there by the phone I'll pick it up on the first ring.

Well if i am close to the phone then i answer it in the first ring, that is if i am fast! I usually answer the phone in max 3 rings. it is foolish to just sit there and wait for the fone to ring thrice and then answer,it is just making yourself feeling important or behaving as if your too busy. I dont any reason to answer the call late, perhaps i dont like to hear the fone ring for hours.
Answering the fone late can also mean that you are not prompt in what ever you do,you take your own time to do it! Which in todays corporate world would not work, everything is so fast. Then why not answer you fone fast too?

You're right, and I think it's just common courtesy to answer a call as soon as you can, especially if you're sitting right next to the phone!

I'v heard of people doing this too. I rarely answer on the first ring. I'm not sure why, but I usually answer on the second ring. I'm now wondering why it is I do this. I'm sure it goes back to something I was told as a child or something.

I think it's something from the 60's. My big sister used to do that back then and she probably didn't want to appear too anxious!
