Do you like having beef in your Chinese food?

Not me! Our local Chinse food shop doesn't know how to cook the beef well, so it ends up tough and stringy. And, it always has a funny taste as if it's old. Years ago, I found a Chinese take-out place that had the best tasting beef and peppers dish. I wish they were here. That stuff was good!
I like chicken in my Chinese food. I don't like the beef too much, anymore. My spouse would eat beef in his Chinese food if he were allowed to eat beef on his low salt, low fat diet. And, he's not, cause it has too much salt.
Do you like having beef in your Chinese food, either home made or take-out?

I don't eat Chinese take-out - I'm Chinese, so I cook my own dishes.
While the cut is important, it also depends on 1) how old the cattle was, 2) how it was sliced and 3) how long they cooked it for. If you cut against the grain of the beef, naturally you'll end up with tough & stringy beef that is better for stewing and not stir fries.
The funny taste is because of three things - 1) the source of the beef, 2) what the cattle was feed and 3) how old the meat was. In Malaysian, local beef tends to be "stinkier" compared to beef from NZ or Australia so we toss them in some special "marinate" to remove the smell.
For stir fries, beef tenderloin is usually pretty good. I don't add much salt to my stir fries and hubby loves it so I guess no complaints there.

You are truly an amazing fountain of good information. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I read your responses. I learn so much. It's rare to find someone so knowledgeable on the subject of food. I'll try the beef tenderloin idea.

Italian, yummy! That's my other favorite subculture of food. Mainly subculture, cause I'm in the US and we're a melting pot of all foods and cultures. Guess if I were in Italy, then American food would be the subculture.

No I absolutely hate the beef in chinese meals, I think it is horrible. I do not even think that it tastes like beef. If I was making it homemade then I would have beef in it as I think that mine would taste better!

Yes I do, like you I don't like the cut of beef they use. I went out and bought a great Stir Fry pan, not the cheap kind at wallmart, but a good hammered one with a thick bottom. I like to do my own stir fry with it, there's lots of stir fry reciepes out there! You get to control what you eat, I use a good quality beef like one good steak, since that's all it takes with all the other items! Thanks tdemex

You're so right! Homecooked is best, cause you get to control fat levels, food freshness and salt content. All those are important factors for good health and long life. You just never know how fresh the beef is at the Chinese takeout place. After your suggestion, I'm thinking about getting a butcher or someone who deals in quality meats, cause a little bit of the good and expensive stuff goes a long way. Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh no, our local chinese restaurant does wonderful beef in black bean sauce and mongolian beef, but their best is Satay beef and it is always so tender and yummy with the fried rice!

I do like beef, especially in my low mein. As a main dish I always get chicken from the Chinese Restaurant. If I were you I wouldn't go to that first restaurant you spoke of .. if their beef is old so aren't other things.
