Our family has a medium sized dog. She is a wonderful addition to our family.

I love your dog. A medium sized female whippet mix puppy. She's very loyal and very glad to see me when I get home.

Oh, I think it varies. When my girls were around pre-teen age, we got them each a hamster and they did great. My boys are younger and do a good job with feeding the dog. One of my boys even changes the kitty litter every now and then! (he is 7).
I think all pets can have benefits if the kids are involved in the care to some degree.

Depend.
If you need some dog to protect you kids,
medium size is good.
If you want dog that can play with your dog more,
small size is good, as larger size increase the rate of hurting your child.
(Don't forgot their claw)
Large size is not good as all.
Even the dog just play with your child,
their might hurt your child too. (Sharp claw...)
