What does it mean?

Have you ever heard words used and just don't know what they mean? You hear them all the time but one day you finally ask "What does that mean anyway?" I was reading a post and the person wrote "contempt" and "disdain". Now I've heard this word many times but really never understood what it meant. I had to check dictionary.com. There have been other words that I can't remember now where I had the same issue. What words have you come accross that you've heard plenty times and just didn't understand it's meaning.

Yes, there are words that I too have heard many times, but wasn't too sure about the meaning or simply didn't know. I'm usually too lazy to check out the meaning. Sometimes, I ask my husband and he'll try to explain it to me. Worst bit is, when people use it in a conservation and expect me to respond, and I'm then trying to guess what their question means as I'm too embarrased to ask them the meaning of that word that's got me stumped!
