I visit the homepage of all kinds of websites. there are alot of information on the homepages. There is information on things you can navigate through the website. You may miss out if you do not know of all of the things available at these sites. Most sites have all of these things on their homepage.

I still will view some homepages. Because sometimes I don't add the link to my bookmark and I have to go to the homepage to go there. Another is like you said, I visit news website homepages so that I can get a general idea of what happened that day in all areas. However mostly I use the search engine to search for the pages I need.

It depends on what I am specifically searching for. For example; I have just had to complete a "Competitor Analysis" for my work so therefore had to pretty much look through the entire sites of a number of different companies. My role relies very heavily on knowledge of the market and other company activities so it is a prerequisite that I go through most sites in entirety most of the time; especially the home page!
From a company perspective too; I would most definitely wish for people to access my homepage. It is basically the epicentre or dashboard that provides an overview of who we are and what we do. Anybody that successfully manages to drive people to their homepage from alternate links will always have a far greater chance of increasing uptake of their services or increasing promotion of their overall profile.

I have never been aware of this until I read your discussion. Well, I think I tend to visit homepages of online news like CNN, BBC, inquirer, philstar, bangkok post and the likes. Official websites are a must to visit their homepage, I think, because from there you will get to find the links you want to go to.
However, if it's a website I am already familiar with and I know how to get to the page I want visit then I go there directly.
