My family does and I hate the habit. See I cook for them some special dish and i put a lot of time into it. And whats wrong when i expect some appreciation for it. But what happens is the Television is on and they dont know whether they are eating ..... or .......
eating while watching your favorite show once in a while is ok. But every day??
What do you think

Growing up, my family used to have dinners at the family table with no tv when we were kids. However, as we got into our teen years, the ritual became non-existent and everybody began to eat in front of the tv or in their rooms at separate times. I'm sure it was very frustrating for my mother. Now I have moved out and have a place of my own with my partner, and I insist that we eat at the dinner table for every meal, preferably with the tv turned off. I agree with naseeha, that I put a lot of effort into my cooking and the least that can be done is to appreciate it together while we discuss and bond. I am not opposed, on the rare occasion, to turn on the tv if there is an important game like a Stanley Cup playoff or something, but generally I think mealtimes are a time to bond and discuss your day and simply to connect. In these days where people are always on the go, technology making everything instantaneous, I think people tend to take simple things like dinnertime for granted.

My family does too. IT is mainly because we are in an apartment that doesn't have a dining area. SO we are forced to sit in the living room (in front of the TV) to eat. It gets on my nerves though. I have to plead with my husband at times to sit and eat with us in the same room. If the TV is on something that he doesn't want to watch at the time, he will go to our bedroom and eat. ARRRH that annoys me. I have to barter with him and allow him to change the channel. I can't wait until we purchase our first home. It has to have a dining room or eat in kitchen so that we can eat together and without the TV.

I know! It drives me nuts. I always say to him "you can't spend 20 minutes in the same room with us to eat dinner?" He they stays in the room, but he's not happy because he wants to watch ESPN. I always tell him that he can change the channel just to get him to eat with us.

I gave up on my family, we all watch TV while eating. We use the center table as our eating table. I have tried to get everyone to sit down and have a family meal, but everyont had something negative to say. so the heck with them. I go into my room and have my breakfast, dinner, or whatever I'm going to eat. and I sit here reading MYlot and read all my eamils.

It is a BAD habit I have recently broken. It not only makes you gain more wait but you associate one with the other to the point where you can't have one without the other. Now if I ever do eat in front of the t.v. it is usually a healthy snack not an entire meal. (carrot sticks, celery or fruit) PERIOD!!

We usually eat at our dinner table. We make it a point to spend some time together and discuss things over our meal. We noticed that we can really have more in-depth discussions and exchange of ideas when there is no noise around, like television. However, there are times that we also eat while watching tv and these happens when there is really a nice show on or that if we have take-outs for our meal. I think, we have sit-down-meals at the dinner table 5 days a week. It's good for the family.

Wow you people are lucky. That is just what i want to do. But we live with my hubbys family and there is no custom whatever of eating together. I tried to make it a custom here but nobody is ever bothered. Each person eats at his own convenient time and that too watching television

We always eat in front of the TV but that is mostly because our place isn't large enough to put in a table and chairs. Growing up we were never allowed to eat in front of the TV unless there was something special on (like Christmas specials or something). Sometimes I really wish we had a table and chairs so we could have more "family" time. We just do the best we can and try to watch stuff that we can talk during (no heavy dramas or anything) so we can still catch up.

We do have developed the habit of watching TV while eating. This is very true especially during dinner. This is because the news is on during this time of the evening. Dad and mom wants to watch the evening news so the TV is on while we have dinner. It's fun because we get to talk about what is on the news too.

I think most families do this eat and watch tv at the same time. To cut the tv off the room would be silent and you would only hear forks hitting the plates. If you didn't cook they would wonder what happened or what they or someone in the house did wrong. YOu cook and they eat, if you said stop watching tv and eat they might choke from eating to fast. I know that it's not a good habit but they will eat everything on their plate. So don't be mad at them for that. YOu run the house and what you say goes. So if you don't want them to watch tv while eating dinner tell them and see what they say.

Me and my fiance both have a bad habit of eating in front of the television, and I think it is okay to eat while watching television,as long as you do not do it all the time.

We really never eat meals in front of the tv unless there is something on that everyone really really wants to see. We used to sometimes rent a movie and then eat dinner while watching the movie together, but for the most part we always eat at the dinner table and turn the tv off. I think it's nice to always eat at the table so that everyone can chat and catch up with each other.

I like to watch TV while eating, so we do that once or twice a week. Most of the time, we eat at the table in a room that doesn't have a TV. If we're going to eat by the TV we'll usually do it witha meal like pizza and make it a movie night.
