Apparently some kids can injest water while swimming, and can "drown" up to 24 hours later from water in their lungs. This is weird. Things to look for, trouble breathing, unnusual behavior and more. Look at this news video.

I read about this somewhere but can't remember where. It was either here in mylot from another discussion or in my local paper. Scares me because my daugher who is also 10, loves to go swimming in our pool and can't wait till it's cleaned out and ready for her to jump in. I'll definately keep these signs in mind whenever she's done swimming for the day and rush her to the ER if needed.

It sounds kind of like aspirating water to me. This is why at the marine mammal rehab center I volunteer at, we don't put sea lions that are having seizures in an area with a pool. If they are swimming and have a seizure they'll almost surely aspirate and die shortly after from water in their lungs (usually within an hour or so).

I have never heard of dry drowning. It's scary to know that something like that could happen. I always pay close attention to my kids, but would haven't even thought they could dry drown. It's good information to have if you have kids and you go swimming this summer. I will keep a closer eye on my kids, as we do go swimming and all of my kids get in the water and swim. Thanks for sharing this!

Hi estherlou! I have heard it before or rather read it here in a discussion posted by another mylotter friend. It was the first time I have heard about it. And it is really kinda scary and shocking. The parents of the boy never had any clue. I am glad that with the news and concerned people, we are made aware of it now. Thanks for sharing this.
Take care and God bless! Celebrate Life!

Thats strange, although completely possible. I have heard of this, but never really thought that it happened. Sounds and Seems strange. Well, will take that as an advice and make sure that I do not get any in the lungs in the first place. Thanks

I thought it was called secondary drowning. If I remember correctly a young boy just last week was found in his bed and he had 'drowned'.
It is strange.
