I know it's a personal question, but I don't think it's so uncommon anymore. My brother takes one. Now my father is taking one.
I'm just wondering, if you have tried an anti-depressant, has it helped? Did you notice a difference right away or is it more of a gradual change.
One friend told me she started taking an anti-depressant and I asked if she felt different. She said it actually made her "feel more like herself".

I know someone who was taking anti-depressants. They are actually changing your personality if you are using them too long.

I have never taken them but mania runs in my family. When I feel an episode coming on I run to my B-complex and it calms me down in a matter of minutes. Taking anti-depressants would have jeapodized my career so I search through self-study and found that a lot of doctors found some patients responded well to B-Complex so I tried it and found it works for me. I know not about the medication but I know B-Complex makes me feel more like myself and allows me to live rather than exist.
My best wishes to you and your family, hope you all find what works for you.

I took them, and I will never take them again. I took Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft, and the first two almost killed me. They made me feel more depressed than I already was. I told my doctor to get off of the pills or I would sue her and Kaiser Permanente.

I've never taking any anti-depressants. Though both my daughters have taken them and one of them still does take them. I work in a mental health facility so there are many people who take them.
I tend to believe the food we eat plays a big part on peoples mental health.

I did notice a difference a week after but it was the worst thing I EVER did to my body. I would sleep 14 hours from 10 PM till 11am or 12PM. I eventually weaned myself off of them and I have been eating right, excercising and finding other activities to keep me occupied and of course in the midst of all of it I also found GOD again. Or should I say HE found me. I FEEL GREAT have been feeling wonderful for about a year now. The Lord is the DIVINE HEALER And believe me I DO BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!! I will NEVER touch ANY narcotic AGAIN!!

When I was about 15 years old a psychologist that I had to see, because I had a fear of being in large crowds of people, had me take PAXIL. I have always been the type who would rather deal with things without medications. But the medicine made me have vertigo(dizzy)really bad to where I couldn't function. Honestly I didn't feel no different taking the pill. So i was weaned off of it till I was able to stop and I told myself I would rather face my fears, and so I have faced them without the anti-depressants and I like it that way. All medications cause side effects and these can sometimes be worse than the problem themselves so I would always advice people to try and find other alternatives first.

I was put on them my senior year of high school because I would have these really bad anxiety attacks that I would shake from head to toe... It stopped the shaking but I don't remember much of my senior year and what I do remember I was not at all like myself... It made every emotion intensify... one day I quit taking it without telling anyone. My aunt who wanted me on them one day comes up and says those pills are really helping I can see a difference in you... that was when I told her I quit taking them...
My dad is on them now and no one in the family is happy with it... He was always high energy very talkative... He was upset because my brother kept making him so angry and the doctor convinced him he needed the anti-depressants. He's gained 30 pounds and now talks kinda slow and has this duh look all the time and sleeps a lot and is just not my dad... My mom is opening the capsels to pour out the medication to get my dad acting like himself again.

When I was experiencing severe pain that much later was diagnosed as a hernia, I was put onto HRT and also an anti depressant. It gave me terrible hallucinations. I opted not to take anything. A couple of years later, because I still had this pain, another doctor out me on another antidepressant. I took it for months and decided it wasn't doing anything...I still had the pain....so I stopped taking them. I still felt the same, it had no effect on me. To this day I reckon it was a placebo. These doctors thought my "pain" was hysteria. I ended up telling yet another doctor that I thought I had a hernia and I was right. By then it was really bad and ended up as a major repair. I've been gaining weight at an alarming rate ever since and I REALLY am depressed now!

I was on a anti depressant about 5 years ago. I had a lot going on in my life. I had a aunt in the hospital dying, my job was stressful. They made me feel almost normal. I was on them about a year. The doctor weaned me off of them and I have been fine since.

I have suffered from anxiety/depression for most of my life. I have a list of meds that I have been on. I started with Zoloft after my second child was born. Initially it made me tired all the time. It was a side effect that went away after my body got used to it. I started feeling better after about a week.
After a couple of years it stopped working for me.
I then went on Paxil..which I don't ever recommend. I have also been on Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin (don't take if you have an anxiety disorder!) and Effexor. Effexor worked the best for me. I was taking Effexor for depression, Xanax for anxiety and Trazadone to sleep. This combination worked like a charm for years. I stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant with my last child.
I have tried Valium, Ativan, Klonopin and Xanax for anxiety. I didn't like any of them except Xanax.
I am only taking Xanax right now and I only take half the dose that is prescribed to me.

I take an anti depresent. It was not prescribed because of depression but because of nerve dameage that it also helps with. But it also does help with depression. I am a much happier person because of taking it. And to the person in the first post. "I was told by a preacher that a christian had no right to be depressed. That the Lord is the healer. Prayer to the Lord and you will be healed." That is just not correct. Yes the Lord heals. He put doctors and medicine on this earth to help us.

I've been on anti D's for almost 5 yrs now and they do help in the sense that they balance me out and things don't upset me so easily which means I dont rage like I use to (which was a huge thign for me) BUT at the same time I dont like the fact that things just bounce off me like that..I'm very much a person who needs to feel her emotions fully and with my Anti D's I'm only feeling emotions partially it seems..Of course thats a good thing when it comes to anger, depression etc etc but not so good when it comes to the rest of them..
No it certainly wasnt a right away feelign by any means....and with me it seems that I grow a tolerance for my doseage after time which of course isnt a good thing but understandable since Anti D's are suppose to be a temporary thing ya know..

I am on a high dosage of Wellbutrin. I really don't notice a change, but my boyfriend does. I personally think that they are not that good for you, but I am not a doctor. One of my doctors has said that he thinks that a slight weight gain that I have experienced is from taking anti-depressants.

It certainly is not uncommon anymore to have been on an anti depressant at some stage in a life time. I think that in UK it is that common that doctors are now prescribing other methods to help combat it rather than actually dishing out pills.
I have been on anti depressants before, I was on them from the age of 18 up until I was about 27 or 28, this was an on and off period and not all the time. I think that they helped me a bit but not a lot.
