Have you tried the software KMPlayer? Before you say something, make sure you've tried to use these programs. And see the difference....you can search and download both of it for free...let's see what you can say and what you find out. Cause in my opinion, KMPlayer is the best player I've ever used. Even you'll try to compare to other popular players like PowerDVD, WindDVD and etc., KMPlayer seems to be far more advance. Other suggestions are welcome...we'll see if the one you suggest is better...

I really like vlc player. It seems to play pretty much everything without having to download a ton of codecs.

I actually have 4 Zoom, KMPlayer, VLC and Classic Media Player. I normally use Zoom because of the interface and simple operation. KMPlayer has a very good interface too, it has lot of option but I normally don't set them. That's the only one that has video on desktop and edit subtitle feature. I maintain 4 because there are some video that don't play on a specific player.

I think KMPlayer can play all the codecs. I've tried to play all the different audio/video files on it and it all played. By the way I've got also a Zoom Player in my PC, yet when I found out the KMPlayer, I now seldom use the Zoom Player. What I like on it is that it all records your last views of the videos whether it's in the DVD/CD movie or a file movie.

I have this "Rise of the silver surfer" AVI one time and it plays well on a VLC player. Another AVI plays well in KMPlayer. I think its in video conversion process, some don't use a standard one or some enhances certain features. This is why I have 4 players, If it doesn't work well on one then I have 3 more to test it to before I could say the media is really defective.

I like Gmplayer. Gmplayer is mplayer's GUI you just have to enable it a compile time compileing mplayer also makes it a bit quicker(but runs on that CPU or better) and you can specify where the codecs are, usually they are in /usr/local/lib/codecs/, but KMPlayer also works but I rather open up a terminal and use mplayer like that than use KMPlayer.
