My cousin who has had her dog for over 14 years lost her dog last week. She was just the most amazing dog. Her name was fluffy. I felt so bad for my cousin I didn't know what to do. I went over to her place after work and hung out with her for a while. I didn't want her to be alone. I have my little cocktail, and I love her so much. I don't know what I would do with out her. Have you ever lost a family pet, and how did you handle it?

When I was about 9 our family dog got hit by a car on the highway ( we lived about a block from the highway). My uncle was on his way home from work one night and saw him on the side of the road. He stopped and picked him up and brought him to us to bury.

I did four years ago. I had a wonderful and friendly long hair cat. I still believe he thought he was part dog part human. He didn't behave like your average cat. I got him at age 2. I had him until he was almost 15. I still miss him. He became seriously ill. And our vet had to put him down. I keep his collar in my bedroom as a reminder of him.

We had a Chow and Doberman mixed dog. He was 17 yrs when had to have him put down. His name was Barron. He had became blind and developed artheritis in his legs. It was like losing a family member. My husband couldn't bury him so we had him cremated. So if we move he is always with us.

i know what you mean. i have my little doggie and i tell you she is my heart. she is like one of my children. i mean she is a pain in the butt, and she barks to much, and pees on my floor, and always wants to hog the pillow, i would not want to be without her. LOL

You just get so attached to a pet. Barron is in my china cabinet w/his last collar around the container. We also have a 5x7 photo of him displayed.

We have lost quite a few pets. Not only dogs and cats, but we have also lost quite a few cows and a horse so far. It is hard parting from them specially the dogs, cats and the horse. Cows are pretty much a dime a dozen I would have to say. Only thing that upsets me is that when one of the calfs don't make it. It will hurt for awhile but in time she will get over it but she will also remember all the good times she had with him.

Yes I live parttime in the middle of nowhere and we have lots and lots of animals roaming about our property. On the otherside I live in the city as well. When my fiance goes back to work I go to live with my parents in the city but when he is back I go live back in the awesome country.

Yes but Their goldfish, lost about 5 five really once you lose one you can't wait for the next. I think more things out of the water are more family as they are more interesting, I can't say I've lost a cat/dog as mum has been alergic to all things with fur. -Sound

We lost our family dog in '04, when she was 16 and a half years old. She was such a wonderful little dog, that we got when my sister was six years old, and I was only two. It's been 8 years, and I still miss Penny.

i grow up with a dog name girl. now she was a smart dog. we would let her out and she would go to the bathroom and come back with no problem. we didn't even have to walk her or leash her. just let her go. she was a great dog

I have lost many pets over the years. I'm old so there have been many years. Dogs, cats, a golden pheasant, rabbits, fish, you name it. I just lost my female cat in November. She would have turned 20 years old in February. She was born right under my bed, so had her from day 1. It is gut wrenching to lose one, especially one so close to you. They are like family members. Tell your cousin she has my sympathies.

I have had pets for all of my life (53 years) and it's like losing a member of the family. The only saving grace is I KNOW they will not outlive us, but it's still hard and rips my heart out. I grieve as I would a person. I just have to cry it out, be sad and get past it.

That's so sad. Fourteen years is a long time. She must be devistated. Some of our cats ran away when I was little, and one of my birds flew away once. They never came back. I don't remember being very sad when the cats ran away because most of our cats were strays that chose to live with us. My dog, which I love very much, has gotten out of her harness a few times and I was so afraid she'd get hit by a car because she ran right for the street. I was lucky that I was able to get her back without harm.

My cousin was heartbroken. She doesn't have any children and Fluffy was her life. She was a big dog and now my cousins apartment feels so small. her passing was a great lost to our family

I have lost a number of pets as they are now getting old.I became sad of course and I felt sorry about the times I became mean to them. But as of now,I am really passionate to my 2 remaining pets who grew up with me and are now 11 years old (I was 10 when they were born).

About 16 months ago we had a dog go missing, we got her in 2001 & then all of a sudden she got the wandering bug & just took off. The lady who found her ended up getting her desexed & everything which i thought wasa little inconsiderate since they really hadn't made an effort to find the dog's owners or anything. After a lot of convincing, the lady finally gave her back to us, everything was ok to begin with when we got her back but we noticed so many changes in her personality which is because of the desexing :( She just wasn't the same dog she used to be. She then started wandering on a regular basis but would always come home, so after numerous times of adjusting & fixing fences it didn't make a difference, she escaped about 3 or 4 weeks ago & we haven't seen her since. Other people have reported seeing her but no-one has caught her or informed the council about it (well they did once but have stopped since they found out we were looking for her) so i don't think we'll be seeing her again :( It is sad, we've had her for the last 7 years now & she just doesn't want to stay in the yard or anything :( My daughter (2) loved this dog but if people decide to keep a dog they find, there's nothing you can really do about it, no matter how many signs you put up or rewards you offer.

Sorry to hear about Fluffy. 14 years old, she must have had a great life. We lost our not-quite-8-years-old cat last year, Harriet. She was incredibly active, special, and cute. She was just good at being a cat! Last April she suddenly began kidney failure, and though we tried to help her with IV therapy and medicine, she ultimately passed away by the end of July. It was heartbreaking. We buried her and still try to remember her often. Our other cats learned a lot of body language from her, and still use her quirks, sometimes.

I THINK I have lost my cat Peanut. He was my mothers cat for 6 years until she got married and her new husband was very allergic to him so I took him and have had him for 7 years. The last time i saw him was on Saturday morning. I have scoured the neighborhood looking for him and have asked my neighbors if they have seen him. Im beginning to think that I will never see him again :-( Its a terrible feeling, specially since I have no idea what has happened to him :-(
