I used to be a stickler for owning exact matching pieces of dishes and silverware, but no more. Now when I look in my cabinets there is an assortment of mostly everyone else's dishes. This is due to my children bringing me meals or taking meals away when they come to dinner here. I do still manage to keep my sets of glassware intact because hardly anyone ever uses them. So, what do you see when you open the doors of your cabinets? Are your dishes perfectly matched or do you have a potpourri of several designs? I send their dishes back now and then but they only return to me like homing pigeons.

The matching pieces do make for a lovely place setting, weemam. Perhaps I should start being nicer to myself and using whatever matches.

I use to have matching sets of dishware. but over the years, some plates have been broken, or bowls have been broken. but i'm not going to throw the good ones out just because they don't match the other dishes I get. So my cabinets are like yours, different colors and styles of plates, bowls, and glasses.

I agree, shymurl. I see no reason to throw away good dishes even when you get more. Besides, some of the old ones are my favorites.

You must be as well organized as I can only wish I were, TerryZ. I love order and symmetry but they seem to elude me somehow.

I have missmatched 'everything' in the kitchen. I use a smaller (salad?) plate for my meals and I went to the Goodwill store and bought a few to suit me. My bowls do not match. I have two favorite ones that do not even match each other. I have silverware of *all* kinds. I don't even have a clue where they came from.

I know what you mean, sherrir. With all that's going on in the world whether or not we have matching dishes seems pretty insignificant.

I actually have both. I have the ones that match that we use most of the time. However, I also have several that I have seen that I like and I have decided to buy although they don't match what I have. I don't think that it matters what they look like as long as you can eat off of them.

You're absolutely right, carolscash! Why limit yourself when the possibilities are endless?

well I would have to say I have some matching, some not, some are mine, some are my mom's, or one of my 2 sisters. When we have get togethers we switch homes and so when we need something we call and ask is this dish there or do you have one I can use, so it all works out, but no I dont have all matching stuff anymore, I do remember a time that I did, hummmm. Then I had children, hehe

I agree, goodhappens, that when the kids start coming along everything changes.

I used to have a matching set but bits were broken and replaced with as close a match as I could get. I bought a box of crockery at a clearance sale and there were several pieces like those we used when I was a child at home so they were put to use. It's a real hodge podge. I do have a matching set for "best" but I have never used it till the other day when I decided to use one of the mugs.

I was like you...now I have the same potpourri of things..I love it that way..I do have a set of dishes..but my favorites are my mix and match china pieces from different relatives or yard sales..I love an eclectic table when having a casual dinner..as you see by my avatar I also have a nice grouping when I want it that way!!!

It was like that when I was growing up, rx4life. We used the mismatched stuff for everyday and brought out the matching stuff for special dinners.

Well IF I had dishes of my own, it would probably be a mix of things. I'd probably want to have one matching set for company but lots of odds and ends of other stuff for everyday.

I like the idea of having a special set for special occasions, foxyfire, and the variety for all occasions.

LOL I have a full set of matching crockery at the moment as I was fed up with the odds and ends that were in my cupboard after years of bits and pieces being broken and went out and bought a very pretty , cheap set of aqua crockery with scalloped edges and it is really pretty and all matches! I actually bought 2 sets when I got it so that ti would last a bit longer , just as well I did as there is already a big chip on the bottom of one of the plates! lol I also seem to have a varied assortment of glassware and haven't gotten around to replacing that yet - probably just as well considering the kids are still young! lol xxx

You really should wait until the kids all grow up before you splurge, mummymo, because they do tend to break dishes quite often. That's a good move to buy two sets just in case.

When I look in my cabinet there is the plates I use all the time(plastic) and my china. I dont use plates that often. I usually by paper due to my schedule. I am so tired when I get home at night I cook and throw em away. lol. I am very anal when it comes to having dishes in my sink. Using paper helps. I used to have matching everything, cups, plates, bowls etc. Now after having children, I have come to realize that if its breakable its not to be used daily. I think my cabinet is quite colorful. lol dl

Having children does tend to make you leery of using china, dloveli. I would use paper plates myself but I only use a few dishes in the average day since I live alone.

Well...I have mathching dinnerware for 12, but I've never served 12 for dinner. (I did used to have buffet parties, but I'd use fancy paper plates for easier clean up.) My bowls for serving don't match the dinnerware. And I also have some plastic dishes that I got cheap at Walgreens - for those times we're eating picnic type foods but don't want to use paper plates.

It's great to know you have that service for 12, kenzie, so when the day comes that you need it you'll have it.

My kitchen cabinets have such an assortment now. It used to be I had such a nice matched set. At one time it was stoneware that broke over the years. At another time it was a nice set of Corelleware that I think ended up with one of the kids. When we moved, I bought some bright colored dishes and decided that as long as it was colorful, it would all go together. So I have reds and oranges and bright blues and golds - very southwest I think anyway.
I used to send leftovers in that disposable plastic stuff, but since all the commotion about the plastic leaking toxins out into our food, I would definitely send stuff in the dishes now.
