Drinking cold/warm water. A matter of age or preference?

Recently, I noticed one trend. Most of the old people I know of only drink warm/hot drinks. They cannot stand drinking cold water (and even room temperature water). On the other hand, most of the young people (especially kids) love drinking cold drinks. As for myself, I love drinking cold drinks (especially cold plain water). The only hot/warm drink I take is tea (mostly green tea). However, if there's cold green tea around, I'll definitely drink that instead. I wonder if it's true that most old people prefer warm/hot drinks and most young people prefer cold drinks? If that's true, does it mean that when I am old, I'll like hot/warm drinks instead? What's your opinion? Do you think it's a matter of age or individual preference?

I think it's more a matter of individul preference. I can only drink my water cold. Warm water just tastes disgusting to me. Of course, during the summer I prefer cold, and winter most warm drinks.

Hello, poohgal! Drinking cold or hot water depends largely on person's preference.it is not a matter of age.I am a person of seventy and i always drink fridge water.i use to keep a few bottles of water in the fridge, collected from the filter, for drinking at the time of needs during the day.i don't like drinking hot water.hot drinks are only tea or coffee, that i prefer.thanx.

Hi shui tong, I think that's because cold water is more stimulating to the digestive system than warm water (just my own hypothesis!). Also, it is a "traditional" mindset that water only comes warm. Last time, there were no refrigerators (or they were expensive) and getting ice might be a luxury or an impossibility. The older people have come to associate cold water as something "unusual". Old habits die hard and so they will likely stick to what they are comfortable with.

It does sounds logical. My granny totally detest cold drinks. She's not even willing to give it a try.

No I'm not going to drink any water apart from coffee or may be a small sip to wash the food down. Since atmosphere is full of moisture we don't normally feel thirsty during these months...

I like my water iced...very very cold. But I like hot tea sometimes too. I'm drinking iced coffee now, but its not super cold, below room temp, but not like I like my water... When I drink water, however, its always cold. My dad likes room temp water to drink.

I find that if the drink is closer to room temperature then I will drink more of it; which is my ultimate goal - helps me stay hydrated

why young people prefer cold water? i think young people more activities in outdoor and that more energy we spend for it.young people still have great bodies and teeth. when we getting old, our activities will decrease.and the body not fit when we youngers. the old bodies more get illness. the teeth more sensitive, get tired early, and more faster getting cold.... so, the old bodies more sensitive, not much activities, and more get cold.that's why old bodies prefer drink hot water than cold.

haha that is true to a large extent. personally, my preference depends on the weather, or of the climate of the place I am in. if I am in a warm, not very well air conditioned food court then I"d prefer a cold drink. If I were in a cold place, where the aircon is blowing then I"d prefer to have a warm drink. Sometimes it also depends on the time of day. If it's early in the morning at work, I"d prefer a hot drink. like hot red date tea, or hot tea, or hot milo. If it's late at night, like in the middle of the night, warm milo can be very comforting as well. other times, in our warm climate, a cold drink usually does wonders. especially after a run!

Yea. I also notice I usually drink hot drinks or lukewarm water at night. Hardly cold water (unless it's after a run).

It should be a matter of preference, or season, or even location? In India, as far as I've noticed, people are not that particular about it irrespective of the age; we drink cold during hot seasons and vice-versa. I personally have no favorites as such, I drink by my instincts and whatever is available. However, due to some unknown reason I don't find myself liking HOT water as much, which I will prefer cold at all times.

I am one of those older woman at 51 years old, and I still drink a lot of cold water. I have read somewhere, I don't remember where as I am reading stuff all the time, on the computer as well as in magazines, that it is better for us to drink luke warm water but I just can't. It apparently cools off our insides quicker and is not such a shock to our systems when we are really hot. I drink a lot of water every day as I am dieting and water is good for helping to lose weight, it flushes out our system. I never used to drink much water before and I really notice a difference in my skin. It isn't as dry as before I drank a lot of water. My face especially is a lot moisturer than before. I also notice that my wrinkles are less pronounced, not as deep. I guess that was because my skin was so dry before and now it isn't.

I am on my 20's but I prefer lukewarm water. Even when I was young, I don't drink cold water that much. It is bad for the vocal chords as well as the body.

Fr me its not the age but the job. I am a full time teacher who needs to talk an hour in class. Drinking warm water or drinks prevents me from having any colds or flu. I need to take care of my voice just like a singer. Take care =)

I like cold drinks, even in the winter. In the warm weather I like them with extra ice, especially water. For some reason I do not feel like hot drinks make me less thirsty. I will drink hot coffee and hot chocolate in the winter, but still feel like I need water or something cold in order to feel less thirsty. I think some people have problems drinking cold things as they get older because of sensitivity with their teeth. I'm sure there could be other reasons.

I just turned 40 and my gums have receded a lttle exposing the roots. That happens to everybody when you get a little older. So cold drinks hurt my teeth like hell! That might be part of the reason.

Actually drinking cold /warm water preference did not count the matter of age. It's better to drink warm water compare to cold water, but not the hot water. Especially after sport, better don't drink cold water, else your body wil be spoilt.

It appears to be true the elderlys usually will prefer warm water because they body structure is unable to take the cold as much as young people are. By drinking cold water, they are acutally losing the temperature of their body further and they body arent as warm to start off with. Young people on the other hand have much higher metabolism rate and they will require the cold water to cool themselves down. Furthermore, young people are more used to thrill and cold water usually helps to give alittle of that feeling

It is a matter of individual preference. It does not depend on age. But soon after a meal it is good to have some warm water to help in digestion. But even though i know that i drink only cold water .

Warm/hot drinks are satisfying, and they help with constipation problems. It also may be due to bad teeth.

maybe older people can't handle the cold temperature, because their teeth are older and weaker??
