Two year old locks Mum out of the house for ten minutes.

Today in the heart of UK a two year old went outside with her Mum to help her peg out the washing. When Mum had moved further down the garden to peg the last few bits out, the little pesky two year old went back into the house, mum not thinking anything of it carried on.
All of a sudden Mum heard the back door shut, realising with horror that she could hear the key going she raced to the back door. It was too late, for the first time, the two year old had finally gained the height, strength and knowledge to turn the key and lock Mum out.
She tried to cajole and blackmail her daughter into doing it again and so opening it but to no avail the door remained locked. Her hubby had gone out, her son was out at an exam and her phone was in the house. Oh dear.
Luckily for Mum, hubby had forgotten his wallet and so had to return and luckily hubby was able to open the back door even though the key was in the door and so they all lived happily ever after.
Moral for Mum, in future when in the garden and the house is empty take the key OUT of the door!
This is what happened to me today, and after having four children, three of whom did exactly the same to me in past years, that I would have learned my lesson. Sadly not!
Has anyone else been locked out of their house or anywhere?, be it through children or not having a key on them?
Waiting to hear all your stories!

OH the little madam - I fear you have another Niamh in the making! lol We had similar situations and I remember Niall doing this to me many years ago when I lived in a flat - luckily I managed to climb the balconies and get back into the flat before he did any damage! Just as well it was summer and I didn't have the balcony door closed! lol xxx

That was a great story and very well written. Thanks for sharing it made me giggle
While I can't think of any time I have been locked out of the house, I did have an incident yesterday where my 2 year old thought she was incredibly clever.
We were sitting on the foreshore waiting for her big sister to finish her drama class. As it was such a beautiful day jr thought it would be hysterical to remove all clothing and run along the bike path with only a pair of red clogs on. The look on her face as she ran off from her clothes was the cheekiest little devil I ever did see.

That is brilliant! My daughter loves to strip too, but luckily for me as yet she has only ever done it in the house!

That is funny, i thought it was someone else. Thankfully your daughter is in the UK. If that incident happened from where i live, the child would gotten a good spanking. I am not being harsh or anything. But you should be proud of her as 2 year old to outwitted you...

I said from where i lived and it happened than chances are there that parents might spank thier kids. But i am praising her child, i am not telling her to smack her child.

Thank you for sharing this story ! I did the same thing to my mother when I was around 2 years old as well. She went outside and I locked the door and she could not get back in . She told me I thought it was a joke . After , about 10 mins of trying to get me to open up the door my mom went next door and phoned the cops . When they opened the door i was all natural , because i took my diaper off . My mom always loves talking about it .

woww..., that is really scary... i locked my hubby and myself at our backyard as well when we just moved in into our new house as i accidentally close the glass door that can automatically locked the door... fortunately, we can come out through our garage and ask help from our neighbour who is a handyman to open one of our window and get us in... he asks his son to climb in and open the door for us... from that day onwards, i try to be more careful when it comes to door... don't want to lock myself outside again... take care and have a nice day...

The mom was negligent.
If something bad happened to the child, the blame is on her. A 2 year old is a 2 year old. The mom should have been extra careful. Her negligence could have resulted into something worst.

Actually negligent is a harsh word to use, negligent is not what she was, lapse in her judgement of leaving the key in the door perhaps but to say negligent speaks to me of someone who cares nothing for her children. And I can assure you that this mother loves her children.

I'm glad this story ended well, gemini. Children at that age can get up to all sorts of pranks given half a chance. A short while back my daughter was relating to me a story of how one of the grandsons(age 2), had locked himself in the bathroom and they had to call maintenance to get the door open. Young kids are fascinated with locks and doors. I have never understood why.

I do not know why but they are. I think it is like a game to them, although with my daughter I think it was a way to get back at Mum hee hee!

Nothing is on the mind of the child, it is just a curiosity, to turn the lock is just like another toy to her.

If there had been a fire then the window would have been put through or saying that the door would have been pretty easy to kick through.
Not a problem.

That did make me laugh, my son has never locked me out the house but he does encourage my hubby to lock the doors on the car when they are in it and I am still outside getting a few bits or whatever, he finds that really funny and another little trick he likes is when I'm out the car round the corner or whatever he tells his dad to move the car and hide somewhere, even if it is down the other end of the carpark . . what a menace they are lol

It is just something that they do if they get the chance. Yes they are a menace!

yes i have been locked out of the house by my brothers and even i have mistakenly locked myself out leaving my key in the house because of the kind of lock we used on the door after experiencing this for a couple of times and breaking my locks i learn to always have an extra key in a safe place so i never worry about that again

We now have doors that can only be open and locked by a person, so I do not have to worry about locking myself out.
Just have to worry about my children doing it too me instead.

Seemed parents should comunicate with their child, there is not whether give them a key or not. Most of parents give the key to their child, and haven't happend this. And sometimes child just want to play with you, they don't know what it will be result in after locked the door to you. We should excuse them, blackmail don't work actually.

OK first off, communication with a 2 year old child can be quite awkward when their command of the english language is limited.
Yes, she probably was playing, but when someone is in a bit of a panic then the first thought in a situation is to actually get in the house first.
As for blackmail, yes it does actually work if you get it right.

wow! Lucky for great coincidence that your husband left something...LOL! I have tried locking our door and my sister was in the shower, our room is separated from shower and when I left, I just forgot that she was still inside the apartment. I lock the door. When i arrived in the office, I saw 2 keys, means I also throw her keys in my purse. I decided to go home to save her..LOL, since she will also be working by 8 am, when i got there, she was able to destroy already the padlock and was mad at me..LOL!

Well there is a story in our family about a long, long time ago the one boy locked his dad out of his car and I think he was two also.
So the little boy sat behind the wheel of the car, put the dad's pipe in his mouth and told his father to leave him alone because he was "moking and diving."
Now, my kids have never done this to me, the house or the car. Kids are amazing and pick up the smallest things that we do. This is why we mothers have "eyes in the back of our heads."

It's always nice to hear stories like this. You always need to keep a close eye on those little rascals, you never know what they'll do next.
I've been locked out before. I left in the morning but forgot my key. DH worked in the afternoon and the evening so he was out of the home when I returned. Luckely my mother has a spare key so I called her and she came along to get me inside.

That must have been quite startling for you.
I think the only time I've locked myself out of the house is when I thought my hubby had the keys and he didn't. We were going to the store when we were both already out of the house and when we got into the truck he asked me where the keys were and I said I thought he had them so we had to break in using one of our plastic cards in our wallet.. didn't want to use the credit card incase it broke lol.
Have a good day

Not so much startling as more slapping my head in frustration for not realising that she was at THAT age!
It was lucky that you could use a card to get in your house!

I remember when we were younger we were locked out of the house (not sure how, as we were all out together!!) and luckily there was a window opened upstairs so my dad borrowed the slide from the people behind us and was able to wiggle in (in his fitter, healthier days!! lol)
Hurrah, we all cheered and was glad to be let in!!
I shall remember this story for when we have children, our door at the moment has a yale lock on, so when you close it,it is locked. Therefore I will have to make sure that i take my keys with me or turn the yale off when nipping out!!

Yes do remember it because all four of mine have now locked me out of the house at some point. I remember the first time I was in such a state, he would not open the door either because he thought he would be in trouble! I was outside for ages and it was raining.

It was so lucky that your husband came back for his wallet. What were the chances of that happening?!
We had a similar incident recently, although luckily my 2 year old and I were locked out together. We were just leaving the house and I closed the door behind us (which doesn't open without a key), and I put my key in the outside of the door to double lock it. But the key wouldn't go in. I guessed that this must mean that there was a key in the other side, and there was only one way it could have got there!
So we were stuck outside. However much I prodded it with my own key and with whatever other thin objects I could find, I couldn't push the other key out! Luckily we had my phone with us so I went to the library and found a number for a locksmith. Well, it was a very expensive day, but eventually we got back in the house. And my daughter proudly told the tale to anyone who would listen, of how she put the key in the back of the door all by herself!
