How do you motivate yourself when you're just not in the mood?

You know those days when you just can't be bothered? It's easier to stare at your to do list than to do it, easier to moan than to take action? Well that's me today and I have so much to do it's ridiculous. At the moment my kids are occupied elsewhere yet I'm sitting here surfing the net and feeling a bit blue. I need a big boot up my botty to get me going! What do you suggest that will inspire me and get me off my butt? How do you deal with yourself when this lethargic mood comes upon you?

Hi GreenMoo, Firstly may I say that I am sorry that you are feeling this way today and hope your mood shifts soon. What I do is just with it, I know that everything will take me so much longer to do when in a mood like that so I just accept that I am feeling that way and relax with it rather than try to fight it. I will usually have an early night also and wake up feeling fresh and ready to take care of the chores skipped the previous day. I know there may be some have to do things, but instead of the whole ironing pile just do things needed for the morning and forget the rest, a day won't hurt. I haven't given you the boot you asked for sorry but I am sending you a big big hug instead. Ellie :D

I don't know. I have been fighting an unmotivated spirit for two weeks now when it comes to my crafts. I need to be out in my studio pouring molds and cleaning greenware and firing my kiln but I just can't seem to get the lead out of my b*** and get out there. I have been motivated to do all the canning we have been doing by the poor state of our economy. But I just can't seem to motivate myself to do my ceramics. It didn't help that both my pieces I had listed on ebay did not sell.

I think I am just depressed about the ceramics not selling right now. I am going to do some work on some pieces I want to run my kiln this week and need a full load before I do. I will shake it off and get motivated again. The canning has been great. I am running low on jars and it will be two weeks before I can buy some more EEEEEKKKK!!!

At least if you are canning you are doing something, and you can look back on your day with something to show for it. Once you've run out of canning jars, perhaps the ceramics will start to appeal again!

It's a real shame about the chickens on eBay. eBay is a funny market though. What sells one week gets no interest the next. Don't be disheartened! I don't suppose you'd be able to combine your ceramics with the canning at these fairs you're thinking of entering would you? I don't know how they are run but perhaps they offer stalls as well.

Generally speaking, if either I or the roomie is in the mood to do the work, we can egg on the other to do it. A few weeks ago, it was me egging on the roomie, yesterday it was the roomie egging me on. We went thru the clothes and took a big trash sack over to Goodwill the first time. Yesterday we went thru and are sending socks, some clothes I got from Freecycle, some duplicate DVD's and a couple of robes out to her folks. Mind you, we pulled all the DVD's we could find and now have them boxed up so we can move things around in the "media room." A couple of years ago we rearranged 2 rooms and got all the stuff moved, but never completely organized. Then the new roomie moved in with her stuff.....

I have a friend who's mom comes in from out of town and does that to her. My mom figured that if I wanted to live in a messy house, it was my problem.

You're right, having someone else around does help. Mind you, it works the other way around too. I'm easily encouraged to sit around and drink another coffee too, and then discover that hald the morning has slipped by. When I need to clear out stuff, my Mum is the best person to help. She's utterly ruthless and bullies me mercilessly!

I always find it hard to get motivated however I always remember the days where I have done the things that I should even if it is just the cleaning and then remembered how much appriciation I got for it and how good I felt about myslef when it was completed. Doing something is hard work but you have to think about the end product because lets face it once it's done you then dont have to worry about doing it and you really can relax.

I think you're probably right Shelley. I always feel so much better about stuff when I've been active too.

Yup youre right in wot you say a boot up the butt is the best cure for feeling sorry for yourself.youve just got to get up and get on with it,push yourself to do what you dont want to do and be determined,as John Wayne did in his film True grit.Keep yer chin up!!

Hmm, most of the time I just sit blankly and stare at the wall (very pointless) but I motivate myself by telling myself that if I don't do this right now I'll have to it tomorrow as well as all the extra things i'll have to tomorrow. That's just makes me feel alarmed and I go and do it. You should think of being able to relax when you've done everything. After all it does feel great to finish your to do list for the day.

I hate to say this, but today that would likely send me right back to bed!! A good suggestion though. Smiling when you're feeling low can trick your brain into thinking you mean it

i usually just take a break... i either watch TV, take a walk or surf the internet for a while... after that, i will be fine and ready to do stuffs again... sometimes i just have to force myself... we have to do what we have to do unfortunately and procrastinating will not help me in any way... so i just force myself after i take a break... take care and have a nice day...

thankyou for your good wishes. You are right, I really just just force myself to take action I think. It is the first step which is the hardest,

Well, it happens to everybody once in while. You wouldn't be human if you were chirpy always, would you? Though that would be an ideal state. Getting motivated is tough indeed during these times. What do I do? Well, I force myself to work. If I don't force myself to work, the work piles up and I will have to pay later. The best thing you can do is accept the "just-not-in-the-mood" state and wait for it to pass. I am afraid there is no cure for it. Cheers and happy mylotting

Hi GreenMoo. Generally I tend to lay back and completely enjoy the lax 'time-off' on the ground of your objective can not be accomplished without efficiency or it will be completed with a horrendous outcome. Desire is the key to open the door for you. Hope this ring a bell at any rate.

That does make a lot of sense. Enjoy the down time & make hte most of it rather than wasting it by worring about what isn't getting acheived.

I'm a list person. I make them and make them. I usually get it all done, but the lists get so long, I do one for each day. What helps me is to rewrite my list for the next day - seeing a fresh clean list seems to give me at least the ambition to do what I know I have to do. I start on Fridays and just list things I have to do the next week, starting monday. THen on Sunday, I will take a few sheets and often put 2 days on a sheet, and on Sunday I will take the "master" list and divide up all the things out of the hosue that I have to do to combine trips and do errands in the same area and all so I conserve gas and get as much done while out instead of going out every day of the week. Seems to work very well for me. Just something about taking htat long master list and planning it out into days - seems to give a bit of motivation - each daily list is shorter than the master list, so it can't be that bad to do the daily chores!

It does take some time to put together, but I'm sure the time spent is worthwhile as you will spend less time wondering what to do next during the week. I also like lists. I love to be abel to cross things through, It gives me a feeling of satisfaction. When the sink is full of dishes again and the kids have been working hard to make the house look like a war zone i can at least look at my list and remind myself of all i've acheived. I do tend to get these slumps once in a while though, and they are primarily because there's too much going on in my head. Never mind, today is another day and i'm hoping that once i've had my coffee and am a little more with it I shall feel more normal today.

I was like that yesterday, tired from a week of work, so I caught up with myLot and played a game and wrote some stuff. Generally, I find that if I stretch all parts of my body, I'll get somewhat invigorated. I have a cup of coffee, too. If that doesn't work, and there's no excuse for my lethargy, I just force myself to do the easiest thing on my list--whether I like it or not!

I can't even be bothered to make the list at this stage! Some exercise is a good idea though. The dogs always welcome a walk so I have no excuse not to get out there and get some blood moving.

Frankly,I am not the guy who can handle the mood perfectly and sometimes I stuck in the mood for a while likes aftershocks.Maybe the problem is my constellation Pisces?Person borns in this time always be of imagination and sensitive. The picture I had done has alway showed up ,like movie,in my brain.I just cant stop it!When I mean to kick the mood out of my head this thing could make me mad too!A friend told me running as fast as I could maybe could work. Then I took it I found it do help! The breath and sweat calm me down. This is my way and I Hope it will help you a lot.

It's actually a very sensible suggestion, as sometimes getting a bit of exercise and fresh air is enough to get me going again. I'm not sure I'm up to any running, but a brisk walk with the dogs may be in order. Thanks for contributing.

My thoughts are flung far and wide just now. I think that is where the problem lies so spending some time trying to gather them may be sensible. Thanks for the suggestion.

Some days I feel that someone has stolen all my motivation and replaced it with lethargy, my get up and go has got up and gone and the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off. When those days come along I feel the only way to get through the day is to try and do all the little things that need to be done, then spend time here in MyLot land. For the bigger tasks, then they go on the list of things to be done when my energy levels are higher and I am feeling more enthusiastic.
