Do you think eating late at night is bad for you?

I was just feeling a bit peckish, and although it is late at night (nearly half past midnight) and i will be going to bed in about 15 minutes i decided i'd have a little snack, so i munched on some of those rice infusion Pringles crisps. It was only a multi-pack bag and those are smaller than the single packs you buy (i've never worked out why!) so i didn't feel too guilty, but i do think eating late at night can be bad for you. They say that cheese can give your nighmares (though i also heard it doesn't it just makes you dream more), and that if you eat food later at night your body won't burn it off properly and that it's better to eat it earlier on in the day. Loads of diets say not to eat after say 8:00pm at night. What do you think? Do you eat late at night and do you think it's good or bad for you? Do you care, lol?

So many answers to this topic as we have heard so many ways of what to eat or not eat before we go to bed. The time we sleep has to be the main point as we should all have eight hours apparently. Also early to bed and early to rise is done by so many and so long as we are not tired after sleeping then we have to enjoy life to the fullest. Have a great life from Deeeky.

I think it could be bad for you to eat just before going to bed as I think your system needs to have a rest and if it is having to work while you are trying to sleep then it is not getting that break..I find it harder to get to sleep when I have certain foods...

They say not to eat at night because you won't be active to burn the calories. As far as the dreams, I believe it! I like to eat chinese food then sleep, makes for pretty far out dreams!

Oh yes, I think it is not good for your health to take meals, especially heavy meals, late in the night. That will cause indigestion problems, which could lead to other related complaints.

I have never heard that cheese can give you nightmares, or rather make you dream more for that matter. I have heard that you shouldn't eat past 9 PM but I suppose it would also depend on a person's metabolism and how much they've eaten that day as well as how hungry they are. I would imagine that if you are very hungry, it shouldn't hurt very much, it may just make you not so hungry in the morning. I am at some times conscious of this, as I feel it could cause you to be more gaseous the next day as your digestive tract may not have digested the food completely through the night. I don't really mind, however, as I feel that I can control my weight. As long as you do not make it a habit (unless you have to. I.E. 3rd shift) then it shouldn't matter every once in awhile.

I don't eat after 7 in the evening. And it is just a light meal. Also if I do happen to get hungry after I have my light meal I eat a light snack like popcorn or something like that. I have read that it is not good to eat right before you go to bed. Because it will put weight on you. I don't know about food giving nightmares but to me it could be possible. I do care because I don't want to gain any weight. I am trying to lose weight.

I've heard that eating after eight pm can be bad. But if you work at night, and sleep during the day then you would have to eat late nights. I guess it just depends on the person. I think they are talking about eating heavy meals being bad for the waist line. I can imagine that a small snack would be alright. You know your body best. I'm sure it works differently for everyone.

I know for me it is bad for a couple of reasons. I can't eat past 7:30 or 8PM and probably should stop eating past 7 pm to be on the safe side. The reason is that it keeps me awake. On nights where I have eaten past 7:30 or 8, I don't fall asleep until 4 or 5 AM. I just lie in bed that entire time wishing I could fall asleep. Or, I toss and turn in a barely asleep but not really awake state. And, I don't lose any weight over night and tend to be a pound or two heavier than I was the previous morning, that morning after I ate late at night. So, it is not good for me at all. I don't sleep well and it leads to weight gain.

I don't think it has any great health implications, so I don't worry about it. I have heard that your food does not digest as good later in the day, but I do not worry about it as I do not have any weight issues or health implications. I try not to eat too late, because I think it is a waste of food as in my sleep I will not notice that I am hungry.

i don't know. hehehe.. well i'm really not against it because i do eat late at night and mind you, it's not healthy stuff -- it's more like chips and softdrinks -- you know, those kind of stuff. Anyway, i don't really understand or maybe i'm not well educated of what's with 'after-6-diet' hehehe.. is it effective? or what? i usually eat late at night because i take main meals between 3pm - 5pm, i mean that's too early for dinner right but i don't normally eat main meal during lunch time so i feast on between 3 - 5 in the afternoon and my appetite during dinner time is gone so that makes me crave fo something during late at night and too bad, there's not much open restaurant during late at night nearby my place so i gotta be okay with stuff like junkfoods, burger or some sort of like that..

Hi,you!!!Usually I do the same thing as you do,eating whatever I feel peckish even at night. But let me tell you the truth it really a bad habit, very bad!You konw when you are asleep your organs are asleep as well,I mean they are not active as they are during the day.Actually they need take a break at night indeed. That is why we should and need sleep.Everything has its life-circle,so do our organs. When we get old,in fact its our organs. So taking good care of yourslef maybe one way to prolong your life. Next time you feel peckish at night you sould do someting for dispersing your focus, not on your stomach. For me,I often see some films, surf net or straightly go to bed. I truly hope you can get rid of it.

i think so... the food is harder to be digest especially when we are sleeping and hence, it can makes us fat if we eat late at night before we sleep... i try to avoid it as much as i can to eat at night... i try to eat before 7 pm and not eat anything again after that to give my body a rest... take care and have a nice day...

hi there, first of all thanx a lot for starting that discussion.. i had never given it a thought.. i normally have my dinner only by 11 pm or sometimes even by midnight.. that has sort of become a habit for me over the years because i'm studying or working late.. but i make sure i dont doze off just after eating.. i go out walking for a few minutes(if its not cold outside).. but now i guess i'll have to do a bit more research on that to find out how bad is it for my health.. thanx once again, cheers!!

Hi hezoid, I no loner eat late at night, although there was a time when I did. I would not recommend it for anyone, as we are not going to burn off the calories while we sleep. Blessings.

I have eaten at night before, but I do not do it often simply because it sits on my stomach and makes me ill. I guess that for me it does not digest because I do no exercise late at night. I do not diet but I do not eat after a certain time at night if I can help it, usually after 7 pm.

I try to avoid snacking on anything after dinner, but sometimes I see something delicious on tv or on the net that I just have to have something! Once in a while, I think it's OK. Also, since you ate one small pack, it shouldn't cause any major problems. I'm more curious about the pringles snack you had. I've never seen it nor tasted it. Is it as addictive as the potato chip Pringles? :)

Hmmm ,it's all depends .. And i'm eating now ,it's 21:04 in China ... I think if you will work in the night ,you need some food to supple your enery or you can not work hard because of your hungry . I do care about my healthy ,and if you will go to bed soon ,i suggest you do nor have a snack any more and just take some fruits or drink a bottle of milk is ok ... Best wishes ,take care ...
