I know that there are many of us who don't always know how to tell if we have managed to pick up spyware while surfing the internet. I stumbled across an article that is very informative on the subject that I wish I had known about a couple of years ago. The article tells you the signs to watch out for that most likely mean you have picked up spyware. One of the most difficult aspects of controlling spyware is that sometimes it’s hard to spot. Some spyware distributors have become so adept at disguising their programs that you can be infected and never know it. But more often than not there is at least one symptom of a spyware infection.
Some of the indicators that you may experience if you’ve been infected with spyware include:
* Endless pop-up windows that open one right after another as you close them.
* You type one Web address into your browser’s address bar but are redirected to another.
* New, unexpected toolbars appear in your web browser.
* New, unexpected icons appear in the task tray at the bottom of your screen.
* Your browser's home page is suddenly changed and each time you try to change it back the effort fails.
* Random Windows error messages begin to appear without explanation.
* The operations of your computer slow dramatically when you’re opening programs or processing tasks such as saving files.
The only way to know for sure if your computer has been infected with spyware, however, is to scan your hard drive using an anti-spyware application.

I have had alot of these problems in the past with spyware. I downloaded two programs to check for spyware on my computer and to get rid of them when it finds them. My computer starts going really slow sometimes and then I know to run it also. After running it, my computer will run faster again. I have to run my spyware zappers at least one time per day.

That fact was really brought home to me recently, mummymo, since I am currently using a loaner while mine is in the shop. The very first day I began using it I was assailed by spyware that literally took over the computer. I immediately knew the cause of the problem: The anti-spyware protection needed to be updated but I did not have the authority. This caused me much anxiety until I could phone the store the following morning and get them to send someone out to look at the computer. Luckily, the problem was fixed in no time at all and I have had no further problems since I updated the anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.

Many users like Spybot, ShadoCat, but I'm not sure about using more than one anti-spyware program.

There is a difference between anti-spyware scanners and anti virus software that actively blocks intrusions.
Programs that actively block data (AV, firewalls, etc.) can interfere with each other and you should not run more than one of each type.
Scanners, however, do not run all the time and they will not interfere with each other (unless you run the scans simultaneously). Different scanners are better at picking up different types of malware. Using more than one is a bit more protection.

I also read similar kind if article somewhere. Spywares are very clever as they sometimes don't get easily spotted. Above are some of the symptoms of being infected with spyware. I think the best way is to install free anti-spyware like spybot and scan your whole computer with that. And don't forget to update it regularly.

You are absolutely right, figjam, we should all keep our anti-spyware up to date.

I recently replaced my computer. The other one was loaded with viruses according to the place that sold me another one. Repairs were going to be over $800 so my decision was to replace the computer and have all the pictures and programs placed on this computer. I had an anti virus program on the other computer but it missed problems. I now have Norton and the fellow who installed it for me swears by it. I also have Spybot on this computer but had it on the last computer and it also missed problems. I didn't experience any unusual pop ups but the computer ran real slow and I wasn't able to open some sites. Thanks for the good discussion with the informative information.

There are varying opinions, carolbee, as to which program protects the best but Norton does rank among the highest of the first-rate ones. I have found what you say to be true, that it is often easier to just replace your computer than to fix all the problems.

I love spybot search and destroy and AVG Anti-virus with anti-spyware, I scan my computer every day and I hate spyware. In fact it's pretty annoying. Thank you for the details.

Sadly, its become tougher to avoid being the target of malicious users nowadays.
The casual user needs AntiSpyware, AntiVirus and a good Firewall to protect themselves.

i agree, what you have post in here is true, i have experienced this many times and the most common ive encounter is the slowness in processing the tasks of my computer.
and yes, you have to scan your computer to remove it. sometimes even without spyware you need to scan your computer for maintenance, to avoid the unwanted applications that the spyware installed on your computer unawarely.

I agree, kawaiijamichan, that we should all be vigilant in the maintenance of our machines to keep them in good working order.

There are some spyware, viruses and hijack attempts that are much harder to foil. If all of the countermeasures mentioned in other mylot computer discussions fail, you may have to reformat or take the computer to professional service.
Other than that, good list. Plenty of people need to watch for these signs. If a new program appears and you don't recognize it, try googling it. Sure enough, if its a scam, joke program or malware, someone has reported it.
Random error messages in windows may mean a corruption or virus, but it could also mean a bad installation or program, failing memory, bad drivers or failing hard-drive.

That is good information. Personally, I have 3 sepearate anti-spyware programs on my computer. Why? Because each one finds different things that the others did not.

It's great that you are protecting your computer, kenzie, but I have heard over and over again that you should not use more than one program at a time.

I agree that it is impossible to avoid spyware if you surf the internet, jer, but there are some who definitely hold to the idea that you should never run more than one anti-spyware program on your computer.
