Build your own laptop?

I found a link in one of my newsletters that immediately caught my attention. It was for a site where you could go if you were interested in building your own laptop. Now, I'm not interested in building one, but it did cause me to wonder how many people do things like this. The site, Zipzoomfly, stated that they have all of the parts you would need and walk you through the process. They made it sound so easy -and cheap too! Somehow, though, I just can't picture the average person finding it easy to build any hi-tech piece of equipment. Do you agree that it would take someone with a background in and some knowledge of technology to pull this off?

Well worldwise honey I have worked in building desktop and servers in the past and whilst I think I could do that easily with the right components i would be very wary of trying to do this with a laptop as those are much more complicated to fit together and definitely more fiddly to fit! xxx

You prove my point, mummymo. With what I've learned about laptops I cannot imagine that it would ever be easy to put one together.

... well if the procedure is given in detail step by step then I do not think it will be that difficult ... I have experience assembling my own desktop PC and I love doing it by myself rather than buying a whole PC ... and as I do open up my laptop sometimes, when it doesn't work properly ... so this seems pretty achievable task.

I take it, moraho, that you do have some background working with computer technology then.

My son and his friend built the desktop PC we have upstairs , Ross has His HND in computing and is doing 2 open uni courses , He prefers the desktop where I like the laptop , they built it 5 years ago and it was way in advance of anything then , It is still going strong , xx

I think it's great, weemam, that your son, Ross, is so computer-savvy. He will never have to worry about finding a job with the demand for computers!

I wish I had the knowledge to build my own laptop. I don't know much about them to begin with. I think you would have to have some kind of computer technician classes through college or something to know exactly what you need to do to build one and make it work correctly.

Not according to the site I visited, stephcjh, but then they will promise you anything!

I've seen a couple of build custom laptop sites. Its actually harder due to the smaller pieces and more finicky components. With PCs you have a larger item and parts to work with (plus a lot of videos, articles and examples to follow). Laptop building isn't as common.
In order to build the laptop right, there would have to be a decent background in technology and electronics to do it right.

I agree with you 100%, progamer. This is not the way to go for the average Joe.

Actually things are pretty simple in the way of working on computers these days. If you upgrade your memory, it will take longer to open the computer than to actually install the memory. So, I have no doubts that the average person, with a set of good directions, could indeed build their own computer.

The undertaking of building a computer might be fairly simple, jer, if you have a rudimentary knowledge of these things, but I don't think it's for everyone.

Neither would I, carolbee. I think it would prove to be a rather daunting task.
