My Pole Beans (green beans)

Pole Beans - getting taller than the strings now

Well I have about 30 pole beans planted this year. They are all doing excellent as well. This time I placed string for them to climb as last year they laid on the ground and didn't produce many beans due to that fact. So now they have started to entwine on the string and even surpassed the height of the strings. I will be adding another row of string for them to climb up and entwine themselves securely. We are going to have a slew of beans this year. Do you have any type of beans planted? What do you do with yours other than just cook them as a side veggie? I love picking them as I am out weeding/watering and eat them fresh from the vines. Other than that we just cook them as a veggie and no special recipes. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I've got quite a few types of beans planted, though I couldn't tell you what they all are! My favourite are a black & white pattered one, really striking looking. I grew some last year but only got a few so I didn't eat any as I wanted to save the seed. fingers crossed that this year's crop is more successfull! I love growing beans as they save so well. I dry them on the vines then put them away in glass jars for later in the year. I tried preserving some green beans using a lacto fermentation method last year. Although they look OK, I've not tasted any yet.

The only beans I like are green, yellow, pole, and wax beans. I do not care for pinto beans except from Taco Bell. HAHAHAHAHA! Try canning them maybe. My wife says she is going to do that. They last about a year once canned. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

No beans here for the first time ever.Planted more a few days ago and hope at least a couple come up. I make 3-bean salad with my beans as well as adding them to a couple other dishes as a stir-in a few minutes before the dish is done. Otherwise, we just eat them with butter or oil/vinager.

That's how I like them, steamed in butter and some spices to flavor I feel at the time. I may use some this year in stir frying along with my onions, brocholli, and cauliflower hopefully. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

After you cook green beans, drain and cool them, then cover them with half water and half vinegar. Add some chopped onion and let it set in the refrigerator 3 or 4 hours. It's really good.

I have planted green beans in past years. They were placed in large pots and I added poles to the pots to support the growth. My grandkids loved picking the beans. We only got a few, but it was a good experience for the grandkids.

I am glad that you clarified that a pole bean was a green bean because even though i remember when i was small my grandmother talking about picking pole beans- i really had no idea that they were green beans! Good Luck with them hope you get lots.

It is just the way that they grow that makes them a pole bean I believe. Green beans grow a stalk like plant and just have the beans hanging. A pole bean grows into vine like plants where they climb a pole and the beans hang gracefully away from the base of the plant. That's what I think anyhow. HAHAHAHA! We haven't gardened in a long time until this year. My husband put out squash and cucumber plants and tomatoes. The squash and cucumbers are running us out of house and home. I just gave away yesterdays produce and picked again today. I do wish he had added green beans and okra to the crop.Maybe next year he will.Every time we grow green beans, they make enough for the community! One year I canned so many I never wanted to see a bean for a long time.

Hi there Grandpa, I am also planning to be putting some string for them to climb, the weather yesterday made them laid on the ground so much and I know it will be not good for them...I love to saute beans with some carrots, shrimps and cabbage!

I haven't planted anything but I'd better do it soon if I want fresh vegetables, huh? I had thought I'd have a big garden by now but circumstances and laziness conspired against me! Enjoy your bounty in good health!

When I was about 12 years old, that was in 1962, I was in this Sea Scout group and they taught us a few things about gardening so I went home and planted some beans in the garden. I was so proud when they came out looking so healthy and I gave it to our cook and into the lunch it went one day that week. I haven't done anything like that since but I do remember the feeling of pride I had when I saw those grown up, healthy-looking beans.

Hi there I have something I picked up from France Coco de Prague and also some Red Broad Beans. The Coco's are great they have a specificy time they harvest therefore allowing you to rotate. I tried one raw straight from the pod, it was delicious! The broad beans are yet to flower so I look forward to their produce soon. Sliced thinly broad beans are great raw in salad! Can you help, each year I grow bits and bobs, but am unsure about "curing and storing". Onions, garlic & pots I think I have a good idea of but the other veg seems to have to be eaten quickly if stored straight in the fridge?

I have the green beans planted at two separate times to extend the season and I have pole beans as well. My kids only eat them raw and I want them to feel free to go get some whenever they like. I also freeze some for the winter/spring but I am the only one who eats them cooked. I also supply my neighbor with some fresh ones as they both enjoy them too.

We also planted pole beans (for the first time) this year. We planted the in a circle (about 18" across) and used five bamboo canes (4 foot tall) made like a tepee frame for them to climb. We like to steam them 1/2 done, then put them in a large frying pan with some butter, mustard (any style...we like Dijon) and fresh dill (from the garden too of course!). Cook them till slightly brown and oh my are they yummy!!! We make a large batch and freeze by servings (using sandwich size zip lock baggies), and enjoy them all year long!

I am the same way I love to just snack on them. Even Tyler will snack on them. I have about 6 planted but as each row of three sprouts up a few inches i plant more so I will have them in stages instead of all at once.

when my mom had the house, one of her neighbors planted a garden We pulled fresh beans off the plants on her side of the fence - with the people's permission - and they were yummy, just nuked slightly.

I love them pickled yum especially in the winter and you want something homemade. I have bush beans and they are starting to bloom already and they are only 8 inches high.

I have to give you much credit your garden has to be beautiful and I would love to be your neighbor. I would rather come to your house for my veggies instead of the store. Just the discussions of them let me know that you have a great green thumb when it comes to growing a good garden when the weather is right. I know that you have a nice size freezer for the winter and still have plenty of veggies with not problems. That is so great. My grandmother had a garden when i was small. I remember that was one thing she did every year with the warm weather would come is grow her veggies. But she gone now and it's just nice to here that there are a few green thumbs left in this world. Have a good one and happy growing.

I can remember my mom and I picking big kettles of pole beans and how she always put a bit of ham hock in them and they were so good. now I buy them in the store but its not' the same, the flavor of fresh is not there , sometimes I can get close with frozen beans but not on the dot lol.
