It's all in the perception, I suppose

When people look at my response to them and notice my purple high heeled shoes that I use for an avatar, it is humorous to me how many of these people automatically assume that I am a female. Why else would I use an avatar like that?
So, I guess it is all in how one perceives avatars in general, although in my case, they are mistaken, I am not a female:)
What about you? Does your avatar say something specific about the person you really are?

So its done on purpose Fwid? My avatar was selected because I like the image. Its actually a running theme of mine it seems as I've used 5 variations of the same character. I think the images also display a bit of "me"...

They're nice heels.
I had a pair of pink heels once
years ago.
I kind of knew you were a guy when you
mentioned your wife in your pizza post.
It was a nice and subtle way to spread
the word.
I do that kind of stuff too when I talk
about my spouse and child.
Let's people know that I'm safely off
the market!
And, that I'm not a ten year old.
Many people look at my penguin and
think happy feet! I'm not a kid! LOL!

The 'man' in your user name should be a clue don't you think? Although calling someone dearie is rather confusing! The only people I hear use that word are little old ladies in tired purple heels! ROFL
My name and avatar says it all for me.

I rather figured it was your last name. I had all kinds of interpretations for it. Like, a shorthand for "fun with the wide man", "Fred Widman", "Frank Widman", and lots of others.
But oh baby, please, please hurt me with those purple heels and I'll call you whatever you want! ROFL

You are right all the way. I did presume you are a female. Who wouldn't? Maybe you like woman shoe, and that is the reason you use them.
As for me, I like flowerhorn fish, that is why it is used as my avatar. I find they are very beautiful.

yep, it is indeed beautiful and costly. Some of them can go up to 30,000 dollars per fish while other normally make you a couple of bucks poorer. The one u see here is not cheap, I guess it is the range of hundreds of bucks

Yes, mine is a purple smiley sticking its tongue out. Purple is my favorite color. I love smileys, and the tongue sticking out is my rebellious side!

Well, fwidman, when you first responded to one discussion of mine, I relied more on your profile name rather than your avatar for my perception. But you know, the visual factor is a very strong one when it comes to judging people. If a person is in dishevelled clothes and his hair is in a similar pitiable state, will you want to be too friendly with him in case you don't know him beforehand? I wouldn't, personally. Similarly, here in mylot, where we cannot know a person by face, only his/her avatar serves as an indicator of the character, personality of the person. Even if you didn't want to, subconsciously you'll be making connections in your mind. If the avatar is of a pretty woman, you cannot help but to think of the person as being that pretty woman when you are responding to her.

True, appearances can be hard to figure. Many times I have been outside a store having a smoke or drinking a drink and people will come up to me and offer me their spare change, they think I am a bum. I gotta dress better LOL
My avatar does reflect my personality, this is for certain. I am a high heel lover :)

I knew you weren't female when I requested your friendship as I looked and saw where you said you were just a hippie. I thought that was kind of neat. My avatar is special to me because I love my Maltese puppy. Already 4 years old and weighs 4 pounds. Wonderful pet and buddy.

At first sight I thought you were female with the avatar but then when I requested your friendship I saw that you were male. So I figured either you wore them or you liked them on women. They are very pretty.

I guess that teaches us not to judge by picturesActually I was wondering because when I went to your profile you had something in regards to man thoughts as a website. It really dont matter what avatars you use to be able to get along with others.Mine is a picture of myself I also use the same picture on Myspace and Tagged.Yes my avatar says I am a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.You have a great night.

Um, fwidman, I don't know that mine says anything specific, but it certainly says something..... The more you know me, the more you know how much it really fits.

I assumed you were a woman and never looked at your name until you wrote this. The heels, to me, just speak of a woman. I used to wear those all the time, but I got smart.:)
My Avatar speaks nothing about me, unless it's to say I love flowers. That happens to be one I grew.

I love the fact that I just read you were a male. I just assumed with the heals it was a women. I dont know if mine really describes me as a person but in some way I guess it does. Just hanging on the beach , it kinda relaxes me looking at it! It makes me feel good I guess as Im sure you feel good looking at an adorable pair of heals!

Of course at first sight I would presume you are female because for obvious reasons its a woman's thing and not for us males. The reason behind is a mystery to me why?
As for mine, I do not know I just happen to love this avatar of mine and I adopted it ever since.

I would like to think that mine does. Though I am not sure if it gives the idea that I am male or female, it definitely gives the impression of someone who is ready to debate a situation, fight for their beliefs and write about whatever takes my fancy. Or at least I hope it does!
As they say...
"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"
Our own perceptions of ourselves or our avatars may not necessarily be what someone else sees.
