I've always been told so of being a good listener and adviser but the thing is I really don't know and I really just can't advise myself...

I hear ya! I have the same problem sometimes. I thinks it's because you are so close the situation you can't see the answer or don't want and somestimes it is easier to tell someone what to do, it's different to do what you know down deep to do.
Does that make since?
Maybe find you a good listener for yourself.
Good luck!

ok, i think a good listener usually could give himeself or others good advise. Why?
If you are a good listener, general time you used to listen others talk. never mind who is right or wrong. Just gain what you want to know or find some different idea from the topic.
There is another benefit of listening. maybe the talk topic you didn't know or you havn't ever heared of it. So it is a good chance to get information besides using TV...Net..or someting.
You could learn whole the things or knowlegde from school, So you are study everyday, like watching TV... surfing on the internet. But i think talk with others is a more better good choose. Maybe you havn't gone to Italy, but some one has, so you could get experience of travling from him, perhaps you don't work in the bank or some other business, but some one has, you also could get experience from their talk, that's very important to the student who is going to leave school. Therefore, you could use thos experience which you listened before to deal with the happning.
It's really that it is better to do some thing than you haven't got any experience, including heared.
So the more you listen, the more idea or experience you will get. And then you will have more idea and advice to deal with the happening. That's all because of you having heared of it.
