how can someone say they love you

how can someone say they love you but now prove a single thing but only saying it. How do you know he's even for real if all he has ever done is saying it once in a great while but never show it at all? any responses would be greatly appericated.

I can say a guy loves me not just by saying the 3 words but by spending time with me as much as he could, when he couldn't stand to be away from me for a long time, or when he tries to cook you something or just gives you surprises.
