Is Nascar a sport?

I have heard some people say Nascar is not a sport but i believe it is most definately a sport. You get in a car thats 10 times hotter then the outside and race around a track lap after lap. That would be like saying football isnt a sport, you take a football, throw it, catch it, run with it and hope you get enough touchdowns to win. with nascar you get in a car and race around the track to win. I believe its a sport. some may call it a redneck sport but atleast its a sport :) Do you think nascar is a sport?

NASCAR is DEFINITELY a sport, Jen! And, congratulations on 200 responses. It is also a dangerous sport. Not only do the speeds create a risk of a terrible crash, but so does the fact that they are doing a repetitive action. It is similar to how people get used to driving the same path to work and home, and they become so familiar with it that something sudden throws them off. People say that you do not have to be an athlete to be a NASCAR driver, but you kind of have to. You have to have the mentality to be able to drive at those speeds for so long, and to avoid a wreck, and to not let the fact that someone else just got in a wreck throw you off. If other people say that i t is not a sport, then ask them why it is not, and why their so-called sport is.

I dont know exactly what qualifies something as a sport, but i know it is tough, they have to have talent and know what they are doing. i know some small time drivers and have been around to know it is hard, not like just getting in our car and driving in circles, there is more to it than it may seem.

NASCAR is definitely a sport!! These men get into a car for several hours at a time and that can most certainly put a strain on their bodies and their health. When traveling over 150 mph in a race with 43 other cars...I would say that is a sporting event. I personally am a die-hard NASCAR fan!! Alot of people like to pick on NASCAR (or CRASH CAR to the yankees) haha. I love it and its a great experience if you have never been to a race. GO KEVING HARVICK!!!!

Its 93 degrees outside and I drive to work in the heat, no a/c. Mile after mile, gallon after expensive gallon. Would you consider that a sport? I guess it is a sport since Nascar is classified as such but its definently one of the dumbest (in my opinion) sports participated in. Right up there with base jumping, and synchronized swimming.

Yes NASCAR is a sport because it's competition. If they just got in the cars and drove around the track for 500 laps and no one was declared a winner, then that would just be driving. But they are racing and competing against each other so its a sport. Wikipedia's definition of Sports. Sports is an activity governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Yes, NASCAR is a sport in my opinion. There are different stratagies for every track and every situation, there are stratagies on the track between rival drivers and also team mates. I've always enjoyed watching it. You just never know what will happen.

Merrium-Webster defines SPORT (noun) as: A source of diversion, RECREATION; a particular activity so engaged in... not necessarily a physical one. But don't think that these drivers (and those in the PIT, too!) aren't in good physical condidtion!!! They ARE!! I recall many years ago, when "Reality shows" were JUST hitting their stride, they had these "Superstar" competitions, where "Stars" from different SPORTS (including football, baseball, hockey, ALL the major and MINOR sports) were competing in physical competition against each other. Believe it or not, it was the RACE CAR DRIVERS who actually WON these competitions! They were in better "all-around" shape than the football stars, etc.! There is a LOT of physical endurance which goes into racing, much less the total mental concentration on SO MUCH going on around them, and you'll get a HUGE argument from anyone who's been in race cars if you imply otherwise. If you have a "cart-race" track around you, where you can race these little "go-carts" you might get a SMALL taste for the physical and mental stress one goes through. That is just "defending" the PHYSICAL nature of the SPORT. Need I even address the definition's "a source of DIVERSION, RECREATION" aspect of it? In the same manner, then could we exclude BOAT, airplane, HORSE, DOG, truck, etc., racing as sports? Or skydiving? What physical ability does it take to fall out of a plane? Even former POTUS Geo Bush (the "senior") did this as a birthday "gift" on his 80-th birthday!! What SPORT is that then? So, by a LONG MILE, NASCAR, AND the OTHER forms of VEHICLE racing, is a form of SPORT.

Heck ya it is a sport. It is actually the best sport of all times!!! They are ranked just like other sports so why would people think that it isn't a sport. Of course congrats to Dale Jr. on the spectacular win. I am happy for him, it was about time.

Definitely NASCAR is a sport. You climb into a 120 degree car, and then try and muscle that car through corners for four hours. You see all of the drivers going to gyms and working out just to be able to handle the race car. It also takes strategy, such as saving fuel and when to pit. Honestly, I think people don't think NASCAR is a sport is they see it as a bunch of Southerners driving around in circles, but they've never actually seen a NASCAR race. It has really taken off these last couple of years. Oh, and by the way, GO GORDON!

NASCAR is definitly a sport! The drivers and pit crews workout in the gym several times a week as well as training; just like any other sport. I could not drive a car that fast in traffic and handle it like they do. I was in a minor car accident once and had whiplash for 6 months. The COT is amazing on how well the drivers take a bad wreck and they're racing the next week. NASCAR is the biggest sport out there with the fan base, TV coverage and track sizes. We live 20 miles from Martinsville and as a commercial said NASCAR is not a sport it's a way of life. I say it's both.
